The French, and in 1940!!!

So there, Hailstone, you are a true Holy Emperor of TotH ...
Generous, tall, magnanimous, valiant and with a flowered beard.
In short: THE reincarnation of Charlemagne!

There will be jealous!
You must definitely see who I am thinking of!
And what an honor to have been the first on our beautiful little
planet to download this scenario!

Aachen, August 2013. One of the bronzes nailed to the city floor,
with the number (signature, "cypherized") formed by the letters
of his Latin name: K A R O L V S M A G N V S.

Here's a Winter War scenario...

Winter Wolves

GRV Scenario 1

East of Suomussalmi, Finland, January 7, 1940: The Soviet invasion
of Finland was grinding to a halt. Poor planning and the sheer tenacity
of the Finnish defense had produced staggering losses on the Russian
side and minimal gains strategically. In December, Mannerheim, the
Finnish commander organized a series of savage counterattacks all
along the front. The Russians, overwhelmed, strained to escape isolated
pockets rapidly encircled by Finnish advances. Broken and disorganized,
remnants of the 44th Soviet Division fought a desperate winter battle
to break out east and home.

Game Length: 8 turns

For the Russians to win they must escape the Finnish encirclement
For the Finns to win they must prevent the Russians from escaping

Russians: Squads, LMG
Finns: Squads, LMG's

Board: #5

Aftermath: The Soviet army had not been prepared to fight the kind of
war given to them by the Finns. Knowledge of the region, adaptation to
the severe winter conditions and guerilla tactics drove the Russian
invaders back across the border. Some 27,000 Russian casualties ended
the first phase of the Winter War.

********Edited to correct Aftermath and date of scenario, scenario not changed.********

Hey LN59, you are making the head swell with your
sentiments. Now I can't even pull up the zipper!

Here's the second scenario for the day...

The Mace (DC1)

On the Chambois-Vimoutiers Road, France, August 20, 1944: Increasingly desperate to
escape the Falaise Pocket, the trapped remnants of the German 7th Army and 5th Panzer
Army found their path blocked by a fortified ridgeline which came to be known as "The
Mace." Isolated behind German lines the Polish 1st Armored Division repelled attack
after attack from their elevated positions, taking hundreds of prisoners and blocking
an enemy breakout. But on the morning of August 20th, the exhausted Poles faced one last
assault. The Mace stood square in the path of the 2nd SS Panzer Division's counter-attack
from outside the pocket - a last ditch effort designed to free their trapped comrades.

Game Length: 8 turns

For the Germans to win they must take the ridge
For the Poles to win they must defend The Mace

Germans: Squads, MMG, LMG's, PSK's, AFV's, OBA
Poles: Squads, MMG, LMG's, PIAT, mtr, AT Gun, AFV's

Boards: #15, #16, #18

Aftermath: A series of furious assaults against The Mace went on throughout the day. But
the Poles held firm, repulsing both armor and infantry, and surviving several withering
artillery bombardments. By 7 PM that evening the last German assault troops had been driven
back from the ridge. The next day, Canadian armor relieved the totally exhausted Poles.
Many of 1st Armour's dead were buried on the Mace where they had fallen, and the Canadians
erected a sign saying simply, "A Polish Battlefield," in honor of their heroic defense of
the ridge.

I took note, Hailstone!

[Below : only for "The Evening Visitors"(*)]

Hailstone productivity in Covid-19 time: two (2) scenarios per day!

Fortunately we don't have the Plague and Cholera on our doorstep!

We would certainly go up to an 8 or 10 productivity level!

Is Hailstone the new "Doktor Faustus"?

(*) An old (December 5th, 1942; Black & White) French mythic movie by Marcel Carné,
scenario by one of our greatest contemporary (20th Century) poet: Jacques Prévert.

Last Stand at Marchelepot (DC3)

Very good scenario Hailstone.
With some luck against the 10-3 Brit leader I got a Decisive Victory on the very last turn.

Great to hear! That's my target with scenarios to reach that Decisive Victory on your last turn and no sooner. Of course, UP844 beats me at my own game every time by getting a win in half game length.

Hey Hailstone, thanks for keeping the scenario kitchen running through this crazy times.

Some of these scenarios look pretty darn good!

Can't wait to see what your going to dream up next!

Perhaps a scenario with just a whole bunch of tanks stalking each other through the countryside or maybe a mini campaign game in the streets of Aachen, Berlin or Kharkov.

The possibilities for this game seem endless and you have done so much Hailstone to keep it on the table!

Regards,
Big Ivan

Easy, easy guys. It's not like I'm making a freakin
sacrifice doing these scenarios because I enjoy doing
them. I pass them on as a way to just say "Hi again".
John, I've never created my own scenario but I'm thinking
about it.

Anyway...

In the Ruins of Ayrapaa Church (FSD1)

Ayrapaa, Finland, July 7, 1944: Ayrapaa, a famous battlefield of the
Winter War, was once again a seen of intense fighting during the
Soviet Summer Offensive of 1944 on the Karelian Isthmus. The hills
south of the river Vuoksi dominated the otherwise flat landscape.
The Finns set up their defense on the southern side even though it
meant the supply lines had to cross the river. The Finnish bridgehead
held for about two weeks before Russians managed to advance to the river
cutting the defenders into two separate pockets. At 2pm on July 7th, after
a bombardment that lasted for half an hour, Russian infantry, supported by
ten assault guns, attacked against the eastern part of the bridgehead. The
attack caused the Finns to retreat across the river except for a small
group of Finns led by Captain Talvitie, who dug in at the ruins of
Ayrapaa church and its vicinity. At 4pm another attack was launched.

Game Length: 7 turns

For the Russians to win they must capture the Finnish bridgehead
For the Finns to win they must hold the bridgehead.

Russians: Squads, MMG, LMG's, AFV's
Finns: Squads, HMG's, AT Gun,

Boards: #7, #18, #32

Aftermath: The attack was more than the green troops of the 25th Battalion
could take. In many places, they ran from their positions without firing a
single shot. The weary veterans of 2nd Battalion were left alone to face
the attack of two Russian battalions. Mostly, the defense was easily
defeated, but the strong point in the ruined church caused trouble for
the attackers. Eventually, the Russians overwhelmed the defenders. As the
Finns were surrendering, their own artillery fired a concentration at them.
The Finns, still in their foxholes, suffered no casualties but Russians
paid a heavy price for their victory.

[A small tribute while passing to Sam (Hailstone) and Eric (Rico21). Originally: conceived as a Double Deuce's TotH Scenario Design Contest bonus scenario, Year 2018]

LN59 - Massu Obstinate Rush (French: 'Massu fonce à bride abattue')

Important: before launching TotH or this scenario, please read the file
called "Massu Obstinate Rush - Designer's Notes.txt" first.
It contains historical and design-related information that you will find useful.

August 17, 1944 (Dusk) - Normandy & Maine confines
('Pays d'Auge', French area of the most famous stud farms)
Made with Editor version 0.2.70 (8/2018) - Tested & played with Game version 1.1.14 (8/2018-4/2020)

Background (semi historical scenario):

Commandant (Major) Jacques Massu leads the 2nd battalion,
Chad March Regiment forming a task force supported
by light tanks of the 12th African Chasseurs Regiment and
armored scout cars of the 1st Moroccan Spahis Regiment
(Colonel de Langlade). Task Force Langlade ('GTL' means
'Groupement Tactique Langlade') of the 2nd Free French
Armored Division, XVth Corps, IIIrd US Army fights against
the depleted German 728th Infantry Regiment, all what is
remaining from the 708. ID, former 708. Festung Division,
a static unit on the Atlantik Wall that was evacuated during July
from the Bordeaux-Royan area - which unit is strenghthened by few
elements detached from the 'Panzeraufklärungs Abteilung',
116th Panzer Division (the famous 'Greyhound Division'), a far more
stronger unit that is currently evacuating the Falaise Pocket
a few kilometers away northwest of the narrow river La Dives.

American (Free French, US fitted) --> [- German

- Playable as American only (Side B moves first)
- AI Attitude: Hold (German deploys first)

US: AFV (Light), BAZ, DC, FT, HMG, INF (1st Line, few Elite), MMG, MTR
GE: AFV (Light), INF (2nd Line)

- No other details to preserve the surprise effect and ... 'to give more chances to the AI' [So, it's also dedicated to Carlo (UP844)]

- [Hey! Carlo, can you give us your news from Italy? It's been a long time, especially with what's happening right now and we are still a little worried ...]

Victory Conditions/Objectives/Parameters:

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Very Hard (highly recommanded for a real challenging game)
QUALITY PATH: High
FOW: Yes
LOS: 8 hexes (because of the late hour the action occurs)
MAP: 1 x 2 Sectors (designed by DoubleDeuce for the contest)
MOD: No
SPECIAL RULE: No
SCENARIO LENGTH: 10 Game Turns
- Not 8 turns: too short for the action to actually be completed by the human player,
which is why this scenario was 'outed' from competition.
VARIABLE END: enabled from Turn 9 on a dr <= 3 (1 chance upon 2)
- So, uncertainty weighs on both sides!
OPTION 'If a SIDE loses all units, a Scenario/CG ends': Yes
- The human player must be very careful on this: destroying all German units
can make him miss the opportunity of a Major Victory if he hasn't made enough
AFV out of the map
. [Yes, it happened to me! ]

VICTORY OBJECTIVE:
- Both sides will obtain VPs while keeping/seizing VPOs and inflicting KIAs
- American only, earns EXIT VPs.

AFTERMATH:
- Please, consider that only a Major Victory means a real Allied success while
the Axis loses only if it really suffers a Major Defeat.

Here's another short and sweet scenario...

Brecourt Manor v1.2 (HV 1)

Prelude: Brecourt Manor, France, June 6, 1944: The airborne drop into
Normandy left many soldiers alone and isolated. The first priority was
to locate their unit and then attack their objectives. In many cases, no
more than a hand full of soldiers managed to come together and it then
fell upon them to achieve their objectives with what little manpower
they had. One such case was at Brecourt Manor. Lt. Richard Winters and
ten men from E Company of the 506th PIR were charged with destroying a
battery of 105mm guns at Brecourt Manor. Armed with only a light mortar,
two light machineguns, two Tommy guns, and five rifles they had to attack
a fifty-man guard dug in behind hedgerows with trenches and clear fields of
fire.

Game Length: 6 turns

For the Americans to win they must destroy the four 105mm ART guns
For the Germans to win they must defend the artillery

Americans: Squads, mtr
Germans: Squads, LMG's, mtr

Board: #6

Aftermath: Once again the training and leadership of the junior officers
proved to carry the day. Despite being outnumbered five to one and attacking
an entrenched enemy, The Americans prevailed. They did so because of the
tactics they learned in training, plus common sense and courage. At the cost
of four dead, and two wounded, Winters and his men killed fifteen Germans,
wounded many more, took twelve prisoners, and destroyed four 105mm guns.
The Americans had done the job through quickness and flanking attacks. Another
factor in the American victory was the fact that this was their first combat
experience. As Sgt. Carwood Lipton said, he took chances that morning he
would never take again. "But we were so full of fire that day. I was sure I
would not be killed. I felt that if a bullet was headed for me it would be
deflected or I would move."

Question and observation.

What is the scenarios marked as DC1-DC4 from?

I think the scenario set in January 1939 with the Russians and Finns is either a typo s/b 1940) or it’s a hypothetical scenario.

As far as I know the Winter War started in November 1939.

Well, I've only uploaded DC1-The Mace and DC3-Last Stand at Marchelepot.
DC2-Red Monsters I wasn't sure I could do but now that I look at it I
can see possibilities but DC4-Satan's Fire is a scenario between the
US Marines versus Japanese which I can't do. I don't know anymore
about the origins of those scenarios if that's what you are asking.
However, the scenario sheets do have the ASL logo and there's the
subtitle "ASL Scenario DC1". It appears to me to be official ASL scenarios.

As for the scenario "Winter Wolves" you must be right. I just wrote
verbatim from the sheet. It does say "Jan 7, 1939" which must be
wrong as you pointed out. The other mistake was mine in thinking the
Winter War proceeded WWII so I didn't think anything of it. I'll
correct that.

Well, here's another scenario for better or for worst...

The Grainery

Stalingrad, October 31, 1942: While the Germans fought tooth and nail
for the Tractor Works and the Krasny Octyaber factory in the north,
the Romanians were pushing through the southern part of Stalingrad,
where the giant grain silos were. Soviet lines during this period
were stretched to the limit. Zhukov had ordered Chuikov and Brezhney
back across the Volga, and it was feared that the prize on the Don
might fall any day.

Game Length: 8 turns

For the Romanians to win they must capture large building on way to Graineries
For the Russians to win they must deny the buildings from the Romanians

Romanians: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, FT, DC's, AFV's, OBA
Russians: Squads, MMG, LMG's, ATR, MOL-P, AFV

Boards: #20, #21

Aftermath: The Romanians rushed the Grainery complex, intent on succeeding
where the Germans had failed. The Romanians held together with remarkable
coherency, and a Romanian general personally led a bayonet charge. Such a
determined attack sent the hard-pressed Soviets reeling back toward the
Volga, only to beturn around by their Commissars. The Commissars (who were
in the act of withdrawing across the Volga under Stalin's orders), couldn't
stem the tide, however, and the Grainery was taken. There was, by this time,
little grain to be had there, but what there was would certainly be needed
in the months to come.

Here's another scenario from the DC series...

Red Monsters (DC2)

Western Ukraine, Russia, June 1941: In the early days of Operation Barbarossa, the
Germans encountered the best Russian tanks for the first time., as a small group of
T-34's KV-1's counterattack. The appearance of these technically superior Soviet tanks
came as a nasty shock to the Germans, as they saw repeated shots from their standard
37mm Anti-tank guns bounced off the heavy armor of the Russian behemoths. Even the
50mm and 75mm guns of the PzkwIII and IV respectively fared no better., with the panzers
scoring repeated non-penetrating hits. Like seemingly unstoppable metal monsters, the
Soviet tanks rumbled into the German lines.

Game Length: 5 turns

For the Russians to win they must exit 4 tanks through the German lines
For the Germans to win they must stop the Russian tank assault

Russians: AFV's
Germans: Squad, Half-Squads, LMG, AT-gun, INF-gun, AFV's

Board: #16

Aftermath: An anti-tank gun was overrun and crushed as the Soviet tanks rampaged through
German positions. A T-34 threatening an artillery park was only destroyed when it bogged
down in the marshy ground and was hit by a 150mm howitzer firing over open sights. The un-
coordinated and unsupported raid was finally defeated as the weaker German tanks maneuvered
for immobilizing shots and infantry assaulted and destroyed the cripple enemy vehicles in close combat.

Well, too bad for the trees in the forest without
Ents to take care of things...

Panzer Graveyard

Minturno, Italy, January 21, 1944: On November 13, 1943, 1st Comapany
Hermann Goring Parachute-Panzer Regiment had been sent to support the
94th Infantry Division and worked with the 267th Grenadier Regiment
guarding the coast. 7th Company HG Parachute-Panzer Regiment was
supporting the 274th Grenadier Regiment and was engaged near Minturno.
1st Company was given the mission of guarding the Santa-Infante-Minturno
Road. 7th Company tanks were already in the area and its 1st Platoon,
under the command of Lieutenant Lentz, was ordered to move up in support
of the infantry near Minturno cemetery. The Pzkpfw III tanks of the 1st
Platoon and infantry of the Grenadiers successfully repulsed several
attacks. Finally, the order came for the 1st and 7th Companies, along
with the 200th Grenadier Regiment, to counterattack.

Game Length" 5.5 turns

For the Germans to win they must take the town of Minturno
For the British to win they must defend the town

Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, AFV's
British: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, PIAT's, AT Gun, AFV's

Boards: #18, #46

Aftermath: In support of the operation, 1st Platoon was reinforced by four
PzKpfw IV tanks. The MkIII's would provide fire support from positions on
the heights. The attack, intended to capture the hills surrounding the
cemetery and to push further into the town, was launched in 1710 hours.
Feldwebel Lubke wheeled his Panzer IV around the corner of the cemetery
and came face to face with a Sherman, which he knocked out with the first
shot. Meanwhile, Lt. Lentz engaged and destroyed an antitank gun and a
Churchill tank. British antitank teams were present in the town, but the
armor provided the shock necessary for the less experienced German infantry
to press forward. As twilight settled in, the vehicles pulled back to the
cemetery and the infantry consolidated the gains. The following day, the
infantry would successfully storm the last British strongpoint, leaving the
town in German hands. However, after being wounded, Lt. Lentz refused to
leave the battlefield and was subsequently killed by an artillery shell.

Don't know how it's supposed to be written because the author
wrote it one way in the Prelude, "Le Pon dum Mons" and a diiferent
way in the Aftermath, "LePondumMons".

Facq McHugh (JF-20)

Le Pon dum Mons, France, September 13, 1944: The Germans attacked from
the Foret du Facq in an attempt to take the high ground east of the
Moselle River. They succeeded for the most part, but a thin line of
infantry held their attack for a few moments.

Hi, Hailstone!

About French toponymy. I know it's not easy for English speaking people to pronounce some of our common names,
so when it comes to place names ...

I nevertheless think that this almost certainly corresponds to "Le-Pont-de-Mons"
(see, Please, WW2 era aerial view) not far from Pont-à-Mousson, department of Meurthe-et-Moselle (Lorraine).

Le-Pont-de-Mons is located east of the Moselle river, halfway between Nancy (to the south) and Metz (to the north).
This locality is very close to the Forêt de Facq.

The essential source for locating, naming (places and actors) and dating events is U.S. ARMY in World War II at:
https://history.army.mil/html/bookshelves/collect/usaww2.html
... within the section devoted to The European Theater of Operations ; The Lorraine Campaign by Colonel Hugh M. Cole,
Center of Military History, US Army, Washington, D.C., 1993.

Sam, for your scenario, an essential reference on river crossing warfare analysis remains too:
DOUBLER, Michael D .; Closing with the Enemy - How GIs fought the War in Europe, 1944-1945; University Press of Kansas, 1994;
Chapter Six "In Spite of Hell and High Water"; the narration is about the efforts of the Patton army to cross this river.

That's All, Folks!

Hey John, it sounds like you might be playing again. I too have
a couple of titles I am anxious to play besides TotH and I will
play as soon as I can hold off from TotH for a while.

Being retired has been a big benefit during this crisis and, I am
almost embarrassed to say, doing better than most with a steady
income without financial worries with no kids and the house paid off.
Also, looks like our hot and dry desert temperatures can be lethal to
the virus. We are at triple digits and soon it'll be 110-115 in about
a month. So, you and yours take care in Ohio where spring has sprung
to better times ahead.

Here's another simple distraction good for about half an hour...

Assault on Stovgorod (LC1)

Stovgorod, Russia, November 7, 1941: The remains of the 308th Rifle
Division has come to Stovgorod after a heavy beating by German armor
near Minsk. While awaiting reinforcements or an order to withdraw
further, they are assaulted by a group of the 27th Infantry Division,
acting mostly on their own.

Game Length: 5.5 turns

For the Germans to win they must capture the three stone buildings
For the Russians to win they must survive the assault

Germans: Squads, MMG, LMG's
Russians: Squads, LMG

Board: #3

Aftermath: After the initial German attack along the main road had
been stopped, German squads entering the south part of the village
caught the Russians in a crossfire. Precise German fire then quickly
removed the last Russian resistance.

LN59, that's a lot of info you provided to see the real thing, thanks.
In the scenario, there's an airstrip or airport that I don't see in your
illustrations and I'm wondering if that airfield is still there or ever
did exist. But, then why would there be an airfield in the scenario if it
wasn't there originally?

SeeYa!

Okay, I'm at it again...

Scratch Force

Irsch, Germany, February 24, 1945: The 5th Ranger Battalion was tasked
with penetrating the front and operating behind enemy lines. They were
to soften up the defenses in anticipation of a later breakthrough attempt.
During the raid, one of the platoons under Lt. Gambosi became separated.
They linked up with Task Force Riley, an armored unit with no infantry
support. Gambosi's Rangers were put on six half-tracks and the advance
continued. Ahead of them was the important crossroads village of Irsch.
It had to be taken to prevent any German flank attack on the main force.

Game Length: 6.5 turns

For the Americans to win they must take the town of Irsch and roadblocks
For the Germans to win they must hold the town

Americans: Squads, MMG, BAZ45, mtr, AFV's
Germans: Squads, MMG, LMG, PSK, AFV's

Boards: #4, #12

Aftermath: Lt. Col. Riley sent in his lead company, but five Shermans were
knocked out by tank supported infantry armed with panzerfaust. He then turned
to the Rangers and asked them to go in. Lt. Gambosi and his tiny force then
entered and went house to house and cleared them as well as three roadblocks.
Deprived of its infantry support, a Tiger tank withdrew and the Rangers reported
a second Tiger on the edge of town which did not intervene. Gambosi's Rangers
took sixty prisoners and together with TF Riley, held the town until additional
companies of the 10th Armored arrived.

Not really Sam, just collecting for the day when The Campaign Series
let's me break free...LOL!!! Not sure that will ever happen though.

Some other good titles out there. I am biased to John Tiller and his
Panzer Battles and Operational Stuff.

Same boat on the finance side, free and clear. Every week I have 6 Saturdays
and one Sunday. However hope we never see triple digit temps in Ohio!! That
scares me mucho! Yesterday it was sunny and 65F. Today, "well its back again"
46F with rain and fog, "Oh the trials and tribulations of living in the north!

Good talking with you Sam, take extra care!!

Hi John,

I do so hope that folks like yourself can get back into TotH development at some point. Particularly with this slew of new scenarios it's so sad to see this game continue to suffer from so much missed potential, not least because of the LoS bug that makes large scale or range scenarios impossible. There's so much more this game could be, but development seems to have become completely stagnated.

BTW, as a fellow northener, but stuck in the turgid south, I can only say how thankful I am for my job allowing to spend some time up north where summer is still, definitely not in full force! Was actually just in Marquette, MI yesterday, and there was still snow on the ground! Loved it!!

Hi Mike,

Long time no talk. Hope you are doing well!!

Marquette WOW!! I haven't been up there in years like 25+. Furthest north I've gone in the last 5 years is Traverse City. Pitched a tent, cooked burgers, lit the campfire and sat around drinking beer and shooting the bull. Fun time for sure!!

One of these days I'll get back into TotH with a vengeance but Campaign Series occupies almost all my free time. If you look at the forum for Campaign Series Vietnam it is awesome! That game is on the horizon and when it comes out it looks like it will be nothing any of us CS guys ever experienced. The graphics alone in the posts show a marked improvement IMO. There is even a new AAR out on the game. Good Stuff!!

As for TotH getting and upgrade or rework? Maybe someday. Right now I feel the game could stay as it is except for doing some improvements on the speed. Even with Razer Cortex installed its still sluggish in the larger scenarios. One of the better things that keeps it going is the influx of new scenarios especially by Hailstone that are not to large and quick to play.

I thought about making some scratch scenarios for TotH since my earlier creations are 4 years old. My problem is I tend to like the bigger scenarios which don't play well with the engine and then there is the time factor on my part.

For the moment, I'm content to see what Hailstone dreams up. He has some interesting work for sure!

Good talking with you Mike and you and yours take care!!

Regards,
John

See right there. Things that I so miss being in tropical purgatory!

Yeh, Marquette has just a plethora of awesome trails and outdoor activities! I need to convince (at least) my (Latina) wife to take a vacation up there, but perhaps, for her sake, once the snow has melted!

I do like JT's CG, but my heart still remains in ASL, I must admit.

I am loving Hailstone's scenarios and am actually working on a spreadsheet that lists all the scenarios that have been uploaded, so that we can have a quick reference list for all of us to use, particularly in respect to playability and complexity. In doing so, I've gone through your earlier offerings, and yeh, they are big alright!

Also, the later CG's from the Normandy expansion look a lot more playable than the original, Kursk ones that just, completely overwhelm the game. God willing, as you say, all these new scenarios will spark increased interest in the game and with that, a growing desire for improvements, upgrades and fixes. I've been looking back at all the mods that were first offered up for this game. The desire for this game to grow is clearly there, just, seemingly dormant for now.

Take care my friend!
