Playing as Allies in MP, I have noticed something odd happening with Vichy Syria.

In all my recent games, at some point in 1941 or 1942, I get a pop-up that Syria has surrendered without me having to invade. I can't see any particular trigger event or common set of conditions that causes this, so I don't think it's a script. It just seems to happen.

But here's the really weird part. I can move Allied troops into Syrian cities, ports and other hexes freely. A British flag appears in the Damascus hex, representing British occupation. BUT when I hover the cursor over a Syrian city, I still see the "Axis leaning" indicator, as if Syria is not in fact occupied, but is still an independent Vichy state.

AND in one game, after this non-event didn't not happen, I invaded Iraq a few turns after the phantom occupation and got a notice that Syria was leaning more towards the Axis. Anyone else seen anything like this?

Yep, I have no idea who's side Syria is on. Saul, Saul, also had a switch on a road to Damascus hex. Is it Axis/Allies/Vichy/FreeFrench or just twitches from now and then. Outta the 14+ games I've played since C19, only had 2-games where there was action in Syria.

In one game, was late 1943 and I was winning as the Allies. Got rather bored wasting half dozen good units just collecting dust in the Holy Lands, so I took Syria. Proceeded to do a horrid invasion of Turkey. Didn't real matter, the real action was on the road to Berlin.

Yet another game, my opponent was Axis and they did an Italian invasion of Syria. I wiped it out, but in the process lost Egypt. So it actually worked. Nothing major, it happens.

But to answer your question, not sure how it works. Can only report what I've experienced personally.

So, EJR, I'm guessing you have seen the same thing happen with Syria in your games.

Anyone else noticed this?

Yeah, but I've totally ignored it all because I've yet to see Turkey, Syria or any of the Middle East really matter.

One day I would like to try a 1942 invasion of Russia. With the delay of declaring war on Russia, I would take out Spain, North Africa and the Middle East, making the Mediterranean an Axis lake. Russia that may need to defend the southern border, but it does not seem to be a winning strategyu to me tyet. Still, giving all the MPPs frop the Middle East conquests to Italy help them build their troops and get more research.

If you do all that Russia will be mobilized by mid-1941. If Russia has the opportunity to mobilize, have infantry weapons 2, and construct fortifications for 3 years straight Germany is in a world of hurt. A 1942 Barbarossa is going to be a lost game no matter what you accomplish in the meantime (short of something crazy like conquering the United States).

True, but if you're like Sparky0565 who plays like MMP surgeon, this strategy will work against weaker players. His cookie cutter has my number, so far. .

Well... I've beaten axis by 1942 when they are played by weaker players... of the two players are technically the slightest bit even, 1942 barbarossa will be a loser.

I think I'm doing my last non-fall Weiss games now though. In all honesty, im not looking for a WWII game that gives axis and allies a roughly even chance to win. It is too demoralizing to play as allies.
