Howdy! I am curious what players have tried and what results you've seen (or lack of results) from the following Japanese War-Winning Wonder Weapons:

Kaitens

Okhas

I-400 Series Subs (and associated floatplanes)

Any stories you can share over amazing successes or wasted effort on these amazing weapons?

Just curious how quickly you brought the Yankee scum to their knees with these war winners, thanks!

In all seriousness, did you ever actually hit ANYTHING with them?

By 45 just put all of your ships into the inland sea and make a lot of Franks and Georges and Ki-83.

Good stuff! Obviously my first post was tongue in cheek, but I do legit want to know if anybody ever accomplished ANYTHING with any of these items.

I've seen something accomplished with Midgets, even if it's clearly not worth the effort (though like them for base defense). But have any of these hit anything?

I sank 17 SSX at one base, and all they accomplished was a single torp hit on BB Maryland, which did about 20 major float damage. That's a 68 VP gain for the Allies.

Haven't seen the other weapons you mentioned used, even in AARs I read on this forum (but I do not read the Japanese side very much).

I do use the SSX at sea. Drop them off and give them orders to patrol. One shot only but they have sunk vessels.

I usually accelerate production of the Type 89(N)

Nuclear Knee Mortar. It fires a 4 KT warhead out to a range of 500 yds. No rearming is permitted. This is a single use device.

Put the SSX in a deep water hex close to the suspected invasion or attack point. That way, when they are sunk they won't cause environmental problems or affect sushi quality..

While playing against Computer

I changed arrival date of 3 I-400 series sub. I also load standard submarines with jake's I know its gamey. And create a Sub merchant hunter group. I succeed sinking 9 merchants over a 1 year period. but it required 9 subs as scout and 3 I-400. the trick is to let I-400 torpedo groups to divide in to 3. Then you have 9 shots. I considered to mod the I-400 more for torpedo load but never did.

Of them all the Kaiten launched torpedoes from light cruisers are the most promising, but the light cruiser doesn't survive long enough to launch them, sunk by subs usually, or they waste them on a fletcher.

The okha doesn't let the Betty stand off and avoid flak or interception. They don't work at night. They are not always used.

You might get merchant ships with the sub torpedo planes, warships flak is too tough for them otherwise.

That sounds like the Davy Crocket, although a little more powerful:

quote:

The M-28 or M-29 Davy Crockett Weapon System was the tactical nuclear recoilless gun (smoothbore) for firing the M-388 nuclear projectile that was deployed by the United States during the Cold War. It was one of the smallest nuclear weapon systems ever built, with a yield between 10 and 20 tons TNT equivalent (40–80 gigajoules). It is named after American folk hero, soldier, and congressman Davy Crockett.

See it in action!

Do not keep these CLs for the Kaitens, not worth it I believe - I made only 1 test with them in Marianas scen nothing hit. I would recommend keeping them at the original with massive torp battery. I have 1 left of them on the 2nd update, they still have 2 x 12 torps. It survived many risky battles at now has night exp of 99! I consider all CLs as expendable so they got the risky missions along with the old CAs (2 left of them in 6/43) they also got around 80 exp. HOWEVER when I say expendable that does not mean I do not value them and I try to keep them afloat, every bigger warship loss above and incl. E class hurt for the IJN.

We got a war winning hit with SSX:

Submarine attack near Vella Lavella at 110,133

Japanese Ships
SSX Ha-41

Allied Ships
LST-23, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

All others however sink fast, they do not deter invasions or bombardements at all it seems, as long enough good asw enemy ships are present (and their DDs/Ams and later DEs etc. all are at least 2-3x as good as the IJN asw ships who rarely hit a sub even in coastal waters, I wonder if radar will change that)

Never used kaitens though plan to seeing as there's a transport sub that converts to carrying them.

I tested Okhas in a sandbox for a bit - do nice damage (and the attacking planes avoid flak). In a real game scenario, almost worthless as they either die to CAP or can't hit anything at night.

+1

Don't build or waste anything on any of them. When they are available, I will use them, but I don't invest in any of them.

The only succesful SSX hit I've experienced as Japan, is the sinking of BB Maryland at PH on Dec 7th... with ONE torpedo that caused a magazine explosion. That's about it.

Olorin, you have me beat...here is one of my best midget attacks. If you can run midgets into and out of an invasion hex, they can be pretty darn effective. VP effective -- probably not.

I use midget subs during the whole campaign and they are relatively ok.

Don't expect nothing more than a little bit of nuisance, but it's more than enough from my perspective.

I generally use them trying to sink ships in harbours which I know are not very well mined.
