Univ. of Wash. projections have stopped for Mississippi and Tennessee, as noted yesterday. But not for other states that have begun easing countermeasures, like Georgia, South Carolina and Colorado.

The U.Wash. projection for Miss. includes this note: "Long-term projections are unavailable for this location. Our model does not account for easing social distancing or quantify the risk of resurgence." [emphasis added]

Does that account for the decision not to project for Miss but to continue doing so for other states, where social distancing is still in effect?

In Georgia, countermeaures began easing a week ago. And shelter-in-place expired at midnight. But "social distancing" (and other emergency provisions, including prohibitions on large gatherings) remains in place.

Montana has the same listed. We did have another death a couple of days ago.

We haven’t stopped social distancing nor have the restrictions on gatherings larger than ten people been lifted, so the UW decision seems odd.

Thanks, Nomad. I see that Montana ranks 46th in terms of mortality/million (15). IE, it's doing very well.

What is the sense there of the present danger? And of the suitability of easing countermeasures?

Target, Walmart workers and others plan 'sickout' protests over coronavirus safety
The grassroots effort spreading through social media is coinciding with International Workers' Day, which is typically marked by labor rights demonstrations.

May 1, 2020

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/target-walmart-workers-others-plan-sickout-protests-over-coronavirus-safety-n1195126

"he grassroots effort — the latest example of a wave of worker activism during the coronavirus crisis — is asking customers to boycott those companies' local stores and services Friday to coincide with International Workers' Day, also known as May Day, which in a normal year is marked by massive labor rights demonstrations in major cities.

"As workers, we have agency, we have the ability to change things, and we don't have to be passive spectators in our political and social lives," said Adam Ryan, a Target employee in Christiansburg, Virginia, and a liaison with Target Workers Unite, a rank-and-file initiative supporting the sickout."

I just KNEW that I should have gone shopping today . . .

Yesterday, most of the Target employees were wearing masks.

When considering the world population whites are a minority, so if black and brown people in the US are having a hard time there are plenty of majority black and brown nations to move to.

Really? Ever tried to move to another country?

Not personally, but thousands find it quite easy to illegally enter ours every month.

This is true for Europe, too, with Southern Europe being the main point of entry.

I find normal that people trying to escape from a bad situation by immigrating into another state/geopolitical area choose the nearest one(s).

Ranger Joe, I hope my comment about canines and felines was sufficiently clear that you didn't think my "perpetually offended" caveat was aimed at you. It wasn't. It was aimed at the perpetually offended.

Meaning me?

Don't worry, just because I love and have dedicated my life to caring for cats doesn't automatically mean I am a dog hater.

Fact is I love all animals and they seem to reciprocate.

I recall as a teenager one of my brother's friends has an attack trained German Shepherd he constantly warned everyone to stay clear of. My first encounter with Killer resulted with his head in my lap and his tail wagging a hundred miles an hour. Brother's friend was incredulous.

I have a 'way' with animals.

Hans, you will be interested to know that my family, who recently lost our Siamese (over 20 years old), cares for one stray cat (got her serviced by a vet), and is now in the process of adopting 2 strays.

Mortgage bailouts grow as more owners delay payments
51 mins ago

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/realestate/mortgage-bailouts-grow-as-more-owners-delay-payments/ar-BB13t8i0?li=BBnb7Kz

"The numbers have been swelling at the rate of about half a million a week.

As of April 30, more than 3.8 million homeowners were in forbearance plans, representing 7.3% of all active mortgages, according to Black Knight, a mortgage data and analytics firm. Together, they account for $841 billion in unpaid principal and make up 6.1% of all GSE-backed loans (Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) and 10.5% of all FHA/VA loans."

Oh, crap. 7% of all mortgages late? That sounds bad.

At another apartment building, I as grilling some bratwursts and then some chuck steaks for steak sandwiches later. I shared the brats with some neighbors. A cat came by, smelled the meat cooking and reached up towards the grill. I did not want to give her any brats because of the seasonings but she did get some chuck steak. She ate the first piece so fast and subsequent pieces that I knew that she had not eaten for awhile.

I managed to hold her and pet her while a neighbor called the local animal shelter but there was no response. So she called the local police station. A cop came by and had a pet carrier. The cat did not want to go in there but she did. I saw her at the shelter a couple of days later and she would eat only a couple of pieces of food at a time but she kept going back for more. It turns out that her home had a couple of young children did not notice when the cat ran out the door. She did make it home after another three days when the family came to the shelter looking for her.

I had a tom cat that when he saw a chipmunk, he thought that it was dinner time - even if he just eaten.

No...he's going to "demand" more money from Washington. Where does he think THAT comes from? It's all borrowed.

That is very good news. Even if it can help some people, then everyone ill should benefit since other treatments, and medical help should be better available.

I don't think this is 'all that and a bag of peanuts'. Yet. Almost *all* major mortgage service and lender organizations have provided for mortgage payment delays due to COVID-19. I reckon that the vast majority of those that accept this temporary provision are doing so out of household cashflow convenience rather than a pathway suggesting imminent default. We've seen the same sorts of programs periodically in regions hit by hurricanes, tornadoes or other natural disasters-they almost always reverse when the dust clears.

White House reportedly plans to punish China for coronavirus pandemic
May 1, 2020

https://nypost.com/2020/05/01/white-house-reportedly-plans-to-punish-china-for-coronavirus/

"The Trump administration is planning to punish the Chinese Communist Party for its perceived role in the coronavirus pandemic — including possible sanctions and cancellation of US debt, according to a new report.

Other potential measures to be taken against Beijing by the Trump administration include the creation of new trade policies, several sources close to the matter told CNN."

Ahhh - canceling US debt... lol.

We are going to get limited insights into the reality of racism in America from a demographic that is predominantly made up of older white, male and middle class.

Amusingly enough, that tends to be the exact same demographic that has the least exposure to racism and discrimination.

What a surprise, looking at some of the contributions

As a middle age white man in Jackson, Mississippi I fill compelled to share some observations about the reality on the ground in the south between African-Americans and white people. Are there strains, yes, sure old wounds take time to heal. For the most part, we live together in harmony with our neighbors our co-workers. We shop and eat, well use to eat, at the same places. We go to the same fishing holes. Our kids go to school together, play on the same teams together. These are friends, we share church pews together. So, while I as a middle aged white male, may not have the exact same perspective as my AA neighbor, we are all in this living and working together in peace and harmony as we are commanded. So, I’d rather not have someone with zero perspective, say from Scotland, chime in on the matter. Most of us Southerners, black and white, are working towards loving thy neighbor.

Did you ask, or is all this just assumption on your part?

Also, did they ever get round to removing the statue to the Confederate slave state from the University of Mississippi?

What about the other fifty odd memorials across the state? https://www.splcenter.org/20190201/whose-heritage-public-symbols-confederacy

As for me being from Glasgow and having zero insight, you might be surprised. We've had the problem since before America was even a country, and we've still the same problem today.

Then you've Northern Ireland, which, frankly, is in a league of its own.

But yes, what could I possibly comprehend about racism from far off Glasgow

OK, the US has one ally against China...anyone else want to enter the fray?

The Australians make noises about an international investigation....and...

"Australia is always there, making trouble. It is a bit like chewing gum stuck on the sole of China's shoes. Sometimes you have to find a stone to rub it off."

I feel like all of this is posturing to prepare for the trade wars/negotiation upcoming. China gets a whole lot of it's raw minerals, coal and ore from OZ. The main reason the Aussie economy has been in a boom for about 15 years.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/mar/29/chinas-policies-put-australias-5bn-coal-export-earnings-at-risk

It is a mutually beneficial trade but maybe Aussies have more to lose.

Australia’s biggest export earner remained iron ore and it is the largest exporter of of the steel-making commodity in the world with 836m tonnes sent offshore last year, enough to build 10,050 Sydney Harbour bridges. Iron ore export earnings are expected to increase by 21% to $74bn in 2018-19 ... China accounts for 68% of world imports.

“The living standards of Australians rely in large part on maintaining a strong resources sector,” he said. “Even if you don’t work in resources, the revenue that the industry brings in helps pay for schools, hospitals and other services.”

-----------------

Australia is the second largest exporter of thermal coal in the world, with 208m tonnes worth $26bn exported last year. About 20% of that went to China.

The report warned that although Australian producers could find other markets, such as India, the pressure on prices would be downwards.

“If there is a prolonged decline in Chinese imports of Australian coal, some of the impacts on Australian producers could be lessened by a redirection of trade flows, but prices for Australian coal could also come under pressure,” it said.

On race and COVID - this study was released today concerning the numbers in the UK

https://www.ifs.org.uk/inequality/chapter/are-some-ethnic-groups-more-vulnerable-to-covid-19-than-others/

After controlling for age and geography they found that the Bangladeshi and Caribbean populations were seeing death rates twice that of the White population, the Pakistani population 2.9 times higher and the Black African population 3.7 times.

They didn't explicitly control for SES. To a certain extent this would correlate with geography. But in London in particular (which has a very high comparative proportion or ethnic minorities and also has had a high proportion of the total deaths) I think this correlation will break down when you do it by borough as they have done. I think that you would only start getting a good picture of the impact of SES if you looked at an individual borough and controlled for geography by postcode/electoral ward.
