Summary: What will this mod be about.

I have tried a number of times to complete the mod for Star Trek The Original Series ..... however, on 3 occasions my old computer has lost the project files meaning a redo of the project. Third time was the last straw and maybe it was never meant to be.

However.

I have been working on getting an updated Star Trek into Distant Worlds Universe. Now with a brand new gaming machine and multiple backups offline, I am shifting the timeline to the Refit years starting in 2273 with the new Starship Enterprise.

Today I start rebuilding the custom planets I created that I have lost.
Below is an example of one planet with a ring system included.

Distant Worlds Universe automatically generates rings each time a new game map starts.
So while this mod is in development I will create the planets without rings and let Distant Worlds Universe create the rings.

When the mod is at the last stage which is where the Star Trek map is created, this is when I create the custom ring planets.

There will be 2 versions of the mod.... one with a Star Trek map..... the other without a map.
If you choose to use the map, then planets with custom rings will be attached to the game, and DWU will not generate rings.
If you do not choose to use the map, then the planet's rings will be created by DWU.

The new Sun... Have also removed the ray effect.
I am also changing the sound the Sun makes when you zoom close to it.

I have created a small 1MB mod and added it into the Design and Modding folder.
This adds a new theme which shows the new Sun in the default Distant Worlds Universe game.

Mod file can be found here
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4802846

Important: If you want to use this mod you will need to go into:
Options.
Advanced Settings.
Remove the tick next to Display Nebulae Clouds in Systems

Improved planets being added to the mod..... here we have a desert planet.
The detail is much better but for some reason when I upload the picture to the forum the quality is reduced.
Much better visual during gameplay.

With the planets being created in the mod I will be using Blender and Photoshop to come up with the finished result.

Below is the Earth created in Blender using a high res texture map prior to adding any special features to the globe such as clouds and atmosphere.

By creating the planets in Blender I have a 3D model that can be rotated giving me planet skins for 5 to 8 different planets based on different views of one globe.

The above picture is far from the final look I am aiming for.
Below is an example of how I would like the planets to appear in this mod.

Not 3D models but a new way of showing ships and bases.
3D models will be in the next version of Distant Worlds.

So instead of a top down profile for the 2d art you are going with a pseudo 3d style? Hmmm not sure as it will look weird as the ships turn. Unless you are talking about something else?

The 2d renders look great don't get me wrong but the game is designed around a top down view of things so why not use the same high quality renders but from a top down perspective? Star trek ships are very distinctive from near any angle including top down.

If what I am planning does not work then I will switch to top-down........ but at the moment I am making sure that the ships do not look weird when turning.

Testing of a new desert planet......
Each planet created for this mod is tested in the editor to make sure color, atmosphere, and brightness are correct.

The planets look great and I'm intrigued over what you plan to do with ship sprites. Have you found a way to animate them based on which direction they are facing? The old quasi 3d flight games used sprites for the aircraft by having it show a different frame depending on where you were at around it and it worked quite well.

Hey Roy, you're back! :D

I thought you totally abandoned DW:U modding and maybe wanted to wait for DW 2. Keep up the good work. The planets are GORGEOUS

No... Hadn't given up on the modding ..... just got extra busy this year making sure my business didn't collapse with this virus.

I also got a little disillusioned with the negativity going around about Star Wars, Picard, and Doctor Who.

However, I loved Doctor Who and Picard when I eventually binge-watched them ..... and with Star Wars.... well I am looking forward to Season 2 The Mandalorian.

I am looking at modding for DW1 and DW2 in the future.

Below is an example of the new gas giants being added to the mod along with an example of how the original gas giant looked.

The next screenshot will show an example of how the ringed planets will appear.

Creating this Federation starbase took about 45 minutes to do in photoshop to get it to a stage where it would work in the mod.

Then added a touch more saturation to the color to give the same appearance as seen in the films from The Motion Picture onwards.

When posting the picture in the forum I lose some detail in the picture which is strange but this looks great in-game.

I was trying a new way of creating a ringed planet but it looked terrible and was aborted.
