Is there any way to keep the game going past 1918 in single player mode?

In game if you navigate to OPTIONS->ADVANCED and the check off the 'Disable Game End Date' option.

Thanks! Is the modeling such that I can expect a drop-off in new units available due to manpower shortages?

The campaigns by default are modeled for the default start and end date, and so the option to extend the game past the end game date should really be viewed more as the recent feature request add on that it is, versus something that the game really takes into account when playing past the end date.

Long story short, there is no manpower modeling per se, but everything is tied into the available MPPs and the default build limits, and this usually limits just how much you can buy similar to a manpower model. But when playing indefinitely this can get a little out of whack over time as is to be expected.

Yeah, lack of a manpower pool is one of the things that (possibly?) would be fairly easy to implement/fix in terms of balancing at least. I get the fact that it's a fairly far-reaching mechanism (every unit would have to have a manpower defined, manpower costs would have to be added to reinforcement) but in terms of balance the actual manpower values are already pre-determined. The unit cap does cover this to some extent but it doesn't change during the war (e.g., increase if conscription is introduced). I have to admit my main reason for wanting to see something like this in-game is so that total losses in manpower for each side can be calculated.

What will happen though is that, all other things being equal, as unit casualties mount, National Morale will fall, and when a Major's National Morale reaches zero it will surrender. So by extending the game it makes a country's National Morale failing more likely, leading them to running out of the will to fight and facing internal collapse.

Good points and Bill is right in that for the WWI release most games are not likely to play that much beyond the standard end date (still possible of course) due to the National Morale mechanism combined with combat losses.

We had heard of some playing up until near or past 1950 for our WWII releases and in these cases it's truly difficult to guarantee just how the game will play out when playing that far beyond the predetermined and pre-designed end date for the main campaigns. But the option is there and we were happy to add it in for those that wanted to continue to battle it out on their own terms.
