I'm not a noob (been playing this since "Uncommon Valor") but one thing escapes me and I can't find any help either in the documentation or on this forum.

How do I get warship float planes to spot for either ground bombardment or surface combat? I see the combat reports showing the AI (IJN) having float planes spotting for BB/CA.

What is the drill? Surely this forum knows.

To obtain spotting during bombardment, you must set your float plane to "recon" and then target your hex that is to be bombarded. As most bombardments happen at night, you must fly at night. As for spotting during a surface action, this is not really modeled as far as I know. However the aircraft can aid in detection so I always put them on search either at night or day if an action is anticipated.

Try to figure out which ship of your bombardment TF will bombard first, set the FP to 1000 feet, range 0. Night ops and Recon mission. You could set all of the ships with FPs to Recon, but only one is used. In fact, if you have more than one TF bombarding, only the FP from the first TF is reported as spotting. I am not sure if that means the first FP will spot for all the TFs bombarding or not, so I set at least one FP per TF.

Incidentally, I have never had a FP shot down doing night Recon, but the are easily shot down doing day Recon - even at 16,000 feet or higher.
I sometimes do bombardments with "Stay on Station" set (because there is no risk to staying there during the day) and the TF usually does a day bombardment. I set FPs to Recon during the day for spotting but they are never mentioned in the combat reports for the Day bombardment.
