Was wondering how effective the AI is in handling only part of the Allies. I would like to control only US and USSR, will other Allies handle the military, research, diplomacy properly?

Thanks!!!

The AI plays as it always does. A lot of puzzling moves and what seems to be unnecessary counter punching. I once played Russia only and let the AI handle the Western Allies. I remember it invaded Italy before it had finished in Africa, couldn't get a port and left the force to rot like a beached whale on the toe of the Italian boot where it slowly died of attrition. The Second Front seemed a long time in coming. Like Stalin I found myself getting paranoid that it was leaving me and Germany to bleed each other white. It did finally invade France...along with Spain which I just didn't see the need for at all. That move left me scratching my head. On the plus side it did send me the full compliment of lend lease MPPS every turn through Vladivostok and the Murmansk convoys. The US Navy AI did stage a rather impressive landing in Hokkaido, Japan.

I'm thinking of trying a game where I will play the USA and UK together. Common language and all that.

Well, if you are running Russia and the US together you are definitely commanding the lion's share of Allied war power. That should help minimize anything odd that your AI allies do. Good luck!

Just remember your AI controlled allies do not receive the bonuses that the computer controlled AI does. ex. spotting, mpp percentage bonuses, etc.

It works surprisingly well, but the AI is still only an AI.
Currently doing a SU only run, on veteran. UK cleared of africa by itself before barbarossa, than failed to do anything in italy (late '42 it sent its units unescorted toward italy, and got destroyed by the remnants of the Italian fleet), but did a nice early landing in france ('43 spring), and slowly taking territory there, allowing me to regain balance and no even do proper attacks. It does somewhat well against japan, taking back DEI and some other islands, but managed to lose three carriers and some surface units not long ago, so the end in Japan will be hard, and Japan getting closer to clearing China (it has 6 units left), and already marching into India.

The European front probably will end in late '44, but the Japan one will need two or more years in my estimate, so it may not be done in the timelimit...

Since I will be controlling US also it should mitigate the problems with the Japanese.

For me, with the AI, it is the only way to play.

I already played games with almost all the majors. Usually when I play with the UK I also play with India. Or sometimes I play with France and the USA (playing solely with the USA is often a bit boring until 1941).
Playing Germany while having Italy controlled by the AI is quite fun. You can move Italy’s units. Once in the Soviet Union, near Stalingrad, I moved slightly an Italian unit to cover a flank, just to see the AI retreating with the unit leaving my flank uncovered.

But still receives some free units from scripts that the human player doesn’t.
