There is some margin for people to interpret data differently but probably not as much as feared. If an instruction were handed down by a governor or the head of a state health department to "cook the books" to paint a rosier picture, or a bleaker picture, there would be leaks, the press would get ahold of the story, and the instigator would be hounded or demolished. It's far more likely that variations in reporting/tabulating are good faith differences in how jurisdictions or entities or individuals do things. As we've noted before, there is merit in the statistics, especially as long as a given jurisdiction is consistent in reporting. Thus, if Belgium reports 200 deaths on April 15 and 25 today, it means something, even if Belgium counts differently than Denmark.

As schools begin to open and prepare to open all over Europe and elsewhere, this is getting to be a worry. The paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome has begun to be seen more frequently in the UK. I'm curious why not earlier, or if it was just mistaken for other illnesses previously.

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/may/17/possible-breakthrough-in-coronavirus-related-syndrome-in-children

Many schools have been open for almost two weeks with no known resulting spike in new case. Of course course there is still reason for caution since this is a short duration to see effects on either the children or adults. The paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome seems to occur well after a Covid infection has has come and gone.

So person to person is still the most important type of transmission. So, no matter how hot she is, if she is literally hot, no deep kissing . . .

When to a bank today and they only allowed one customer in the lobby at a time. There were actually three tellers on duty with three other bankers that I saw so they are light on the normal staff.

Walmart took out their benches. No benches outside either where the bus comes. They turned off the water fountains and jacked up the price of the cold beverages by the checkout as well. No large bags for larger items either. I said something to a cashier supervisor and she said to complain at walmart dot com. I said no, I will look up the e-mail addresses of the president, CEO, and the members of the board and complain to them. The best part is, I can get a deal where the law firm will only take 20% of a settlement . . .

Here's one for the lighter side of COVID-19 files: Football league to discuss discipline for club over sex dolls in stands

This is metric "football," by the way. Since the dolls are all wearing masks, it doesn't look too bad to me. Kudos to the lad who came up with the idea.

Here's part two of the disparate impact on East vs. West: Why East beat West on Covid-19 (Part 2)

There's a lot of speculation on why Asia in general has done relatively well in the piece. Here's a snippet discussing the tuberculosis vaccine:

Hopes for a silver-bullet medicine to counter Covid-19 have so far proved unfounded. While the world awaits a dedicated Covid-19 vaccine, BCG, a 100-year-old tuberculosis vaccination that appears to train or stimulate the overall immune system, may provide a very important shield.

“If I were to identify one factor” in the East-West conundrum, “it would be levels of BCG vaccination,” said Gurel.

Maps of the level of BCG vaccination show a strikingly close correlation to numbers of Covid-19 casualties. According to the BCG World Atlas, most of Western Europe including France, Spain and the UK had past national BCG vaccination policies. In Italy and the United States, BCG was only recommended for select groups.

Most of Eastern Europe and Asia, which have weathered the crisis more effectively, maintain ongoing national BCG vaccination programs.

Differences between neighbors are striking. Spain suffered high infection and mortality rates, while Portugal (which has a BCG program) did not, despite their shared border, Gurel noted. Moreover, Covid-19 rates in western Germany were higher in the country’s east, which previously had BCG vaccinations, he said.

He also was the only reporter to bother to go to the King Club (ground zero for the club outbreak we had on May 1) and interview the owner. That's in this good piece on the impact on nightlife across Asia: Covid-19 turns the lights out on Asia’s nightlife

Quote from the club owner: “We did not let people in without masks, we did temperature tests on the doors and we took the names and phone numbers of everyone who came in,” he told Asia Times. “We did everything the authorities asked us to do – but it still happened! It’s a nightmare.”

The other big news is public schools are re-opening today, with high school seniors going back first.

Cheers,
CB

A funny one about the dolls. Your friend has another good one and something to think about with that vaccine.

Here is a question about this person, I know that he does not have a driver's license yet, does this also cover his high school diploma and will his further educational expenses be covered by the state?

quote:

Due to COVID-19, Elliott Tanner's graduation, like so many students, will be a virtual one. Despite the changes, his family is hoping to make his day special.
.
.
.
In just a few weeks, Elliott Tanner will mark a major milestone. He’s part of the Normandale Community College graduating class of 2020 and he’s just 11-years-old.
.
.
.
And this year he began studying physics at the University of Minnesota.

"I’m hoping to either be a physics professor or a theoretical physicist or a mathematician," said Elliott.
.
.
.
Elliott, we're told, will be graduating with high honors. He has roughly a few more semesters before he receives his degree from the University of Minnesota.

https://www.fox9.com/news/11-year-old-boy-set-to-earn-associate-degree-in-math-likely-the-youngest-ever-in-minnesota

So will he get his PhD before he gets his drivers license? Will he be a graduate teaching assistant in a few years? Imagine just what that will look like!

Navajo Nation Has Highest Covid-19 Infection Rate in the U.S.
https://www.ecowatch.com/navajo-nation-covid-19-infection-rate-2646033759.html?rebelltitem=2#rebelltitem2

The Navajo Nation already has high risk factors of comorbidities, including diabetes, lung disease, high-blood pressure, hypertension and heart disease. There's also a lack of running water, medical infrastructure, internet access, information and adequate housing. Navajo also tend to live in close quarters with multiple generations in one household.

Saw a BBC interview of a Navajo tribal leader. He says the reason for the high infection rate has to do with having the highest testing rate in the US (compared to any state). That goes to what I said earlier about being unable to interpret the data without knowing the entire context of it. The other things you noted are in play. The internet access has to do with getting information and passing it to their people. The dwellings are widely scattered so people exchange information when they go to the store for groceries. Not the most efficient means of communication!

In Senegal, does bed mean "off-the-floor-with-a-mattress", or a straw mat on a dirt hut floor. Given all the other problems in the country, I find it hard to believe they could provide Western-standard medical care or beds. Sounds like an extravagant promise that the country will not be able to keep.

Good questions. Obviously not western style care with less than 60 icu beds in the country. Still, they have a different approach tailored for their capabilities which seems to be very effective and worth examining and understanding I think.

Gov. Walz announces phased re-opening of restaurants, bars, salons

quote:

On Wednesday, Governor Tim Walz announced a phased re-opening of restaurants, bars and places of public accomodation beginning on June 1st.

According to Governor Walz, outdoor dining can begin on June 1, with restaurants maintaining social distancing and seating no more than 50 patrons at a time. In addition to outdoor dining, restaurants and bars will be able to continue to offer takeout, curbside, and delivery services, which have been permitted throughout the pandemic in Minnesota.

https://www.wdio.com/news/governor-tim-walz-update-coronavirus-/5736167/

They should be open for this weekend. A big tourist weekend.

But we can have our Biergartens!

No Spooner Rodeo this year

quote:

The Spooner Rodeo is now among the many major events that won't happen this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Organizers announced Wednesday that the 67th Annual Heart of the North Spooner Rodeo is being postponed until July 8-10, 2021. The decision was made by the committee that runs the event.

"This decision was not taken lightly as it has a huge impact on our community, businesses, rodeo personnel, contestants, fans, and many others. To ensure the safety of all and make sure the rodeo remains viable in future years," the rodeo said in a statement posted on its website.

Duluth Airshow postponed until 2021

quote:

The Duluth Airshow made the difficult decision Wednesday to postpone the 2020 show scheduled for July 18-19, 2020 at the Duluth International Airport. Leadership cited the extraordinary circumstances as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

“In 20 years of doing the Airshow, and doing what we do for a living, this is probably the most difficult decision we’ve ever had to make,” Duluth Airshow President Ryan Kern told WDIO News.

The Duluth Airshow has been postponed to June 26-27, 2021. It will feature the United States Navy Blue Angels and be presented by Essentia Health and AAR.

"Most, if not all of the performers will be performing on the postponement date, with the exception of the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, but the Blue Angels will be headlining the postponed show," Kern told WDIO News.

They probably need three categories.

1) Positive for coronavirus, no matter how many tests so you don't count people more than once.
2) Positive for coronavirus and antibodies, move people from category 1 as needed.
3) Positive for antibodies but no positive test for coronavirus.

Keep track of children as well. Evaluate those who have had this imflammatory condition and see if there are any cofactors be they medical and/or pharmaceutical.

Minor League Baseball Is in Crisis
In response to an SI survey on the effects of the pandemic, minor league teams made one thing clear: An American institution will never be the same.
Robert Sanchez
May 19, 2020

quote:

. . . Following professional baseball’s shutdown in March, minor league clubs now exist in a sort of sports purgatory, 160 affiliates unsure whether they will have games to host and worried about how they will pay employees, settle debts, and potentially return millions of dollars in ticket and advertising revenue to fans and sponsors. Not to mention the existential anxiety they’ve felt since early last winter, when Major League Baseball proposed a plan that would reportedly eliminate 42 affiliates and give big league clubs greater control over the system.
.
.
.
And in the era of COVID-19, everyone is hurting. Local businesses failing, or even cutting their advertising budgets, is a looming disaster for clubs. “Of course I’m worried about our team, but I’m worried about our businesses and all the people in our community who are being affected by this,” says Marcus Sabata, the general manager for the Double A Jackson (Tenn.) Generals. “We’re a small business, too, so we get it. We’re right there with them.”
.
.
.
On a Friday evening in early May, the scene at the Colorado Springs stadium of the Rocky Mountain Vibes was decidedly different. Jennifer Cupples; her husband, Ken; and their two children pulled up curbside to pick up a food order. The family had been player hosts last year for the Vibes, the Brewers’ short-season rookie league team that is reportedly on the list of teams slated for contraction. Every year thousands of families nationwide house young ballplayers, often from other countries, baseball’s own form of cultural exchange. As Toasty—the Vibes’ anthropomorphic flaming s’more mascot—stood near the Cupples’ Toyota SUV, a Vibes employee handed Jennifer her $35 “Quarantined Couple” meal, which included chicken bacon ranch and pulled pork sandwiches, fries, cookies, a bottle of wine and two rolls of toilet paper. The Cupples hoped this wasn’t their last visit to the ballpark.

“This place has become part of our family,” Jennifer says.

Toasty’s Takeout, as it is called, is the brainchild of Vibes general manager Chris Phillips, an 18-year veteran of minor league front offices. The curbside food business runs three evenings per week at the stadium, and a good night might earn $600—“Hardly a get-rich-quick scheme,” Phillips says—but it’s enough to keep some of the staff employed through the pandemic. “We can either sit around and feel bad about this situation, or we can have some fun,” Phillips says. “We’re going to focus on 2020, hope for the best and then deal with what happens after that.”
.
.
.
Outside the stadium, Jennifer and Ken Cupples unboxed their meals while their six-year-old daughter, Hope, threw a baseball in the air. Several friends arrived a while later—families who’d also hosted Vibes players last season. The husbands and wives set up chairs or stood several feet apart from one another, talking about the pandemic, the potentially lost season, and whether minor league baseball would exist in Colorado Springs come next year.

They laughed about player sleepovers at their homes, about the Dominican kids who’d never tasted a s’more before arriving in the Springs, about birthday parties and the time they drove five hours to Grand Junction, Colo., where they surprised their players and waved at them from the stands. They talked about their final Sunday with the players last season, how they cried all the way home from the airport, how each of the young men had stayed in touch during the pandemic.

The group got quiet as their food began to arrive. Toasty, the s’more, stood off to one side, hanging on to the sides of his cloth graham crackers. “Those boys were just like our kids,” one of the women finally said. The group nodded. “Baseball is special to all of us. I just hope this isn’t the end.”

So US minor league baseball is an international concern and a cultural exchange - such as teaching people about s'mores!

U.S. Jobless Claims Rise to 39 Million as All 50 States Start Reopening
5/21/20

quote:

When combined with initial jobless claims filed over the last eight weeks, the new figures took the nine-week jobless claims total to 38.6 million as the coronavirus pandemic continues to rattle the U.S. economy.

According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, the entire civilian labor force stood at 156.4 million in April this year, meaning now roughly a quarter of the American workforce have filed for unemployment benefits in the last two months.
.
.
.
The Department of Labor released its latest jobless claim figures as all 50 states began rolling back lockdown measures after two months of coronavirus-related restrictions.

The Economic Policy Institute's policy director Heidi Shierholz tweeted: "Whether furloughed workers will actually be called back or whether furloughs will turn into layoffs will hinge on whether policymakers enact an effective testing and contact tracing so that people will feel safe enough to reengage in normal activity as the economy reopens."

17% of Londoners Have Had COVID-19, Health Secretary Says
5/21/20

quote:

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said that 17 percent of Londoners have had COVID-19.

Hancock outlined the figure during the Downing Street press briefing.

The health secretary said that the results of the Government's antibody surveillance study have shown 17 percent of people in London and five percent of the population in the rest of the country have tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies.

Given London's population, that would mean 1.5 million people in the capital have had the virus.

It comes a week after the government announced that a new COVID-19 antibody test to tell whether someone has had the virus has been approved for use in the U.K. after being found to be 100 percent accurate.

The test, developed by Swiss pharmaceutical company Roache, has been tested by Public Health England and was found to be highly specific and accurate.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson had previously labeled a reliable antibody test as a "game-changer" as it would allow the government to understand how many people had COVID-19 and if they had developed immunity.
