I will be opening a thread to post progress on our game, probably not too much operational details in the beginning but mainly combat reports.

The scenario is DaBigBabes (n. 28, the real deal) with stock map and stacking limits. I visited this scenario beforehand and it seems quite restricting on engineer and base forces, making the control of good pre existing ports and airfields in good locations that much more important. This is my first game as allies and gosh, I'm waiting for that mighty logistical freight train that people so often talk about.

The Pearl Harbor BBs will be out of the war quite a while. Manila port was also hit very hard, but still almost half of the sub fleet remains in relative good condition to start fighting back. Meanwhile Clark Field was let off relatively lightly. Dutch reorganise forces and every available minelayer in the DEI set out to their duties.

Air losses. Strafing with the fragile A6M frame can be quite brutal in the range of every possible hand gun.

The second day of the war was marked by a notable naval action off Kuantan, where British forces tried to intercept landing forces, and instead intercepted their heavy covering force of the Kongo class battlecruisers. Also another Japanese cruiser force seems to be present here. British air force in Malaya sortied against the Japanese ships scoring a few hits.

Another action was when British PT boats out of Hong Kong sneaked to the major Japanese naval base at Samah. British destroyers were also sent to intercept Japanese convoys in Takao, but didn't enter due to minefields. I'm not sure, could've been due to low agression of commander (need to check).

The third notable action was light American surface forces making sorties out of Pearl Harbor (in vane) to find the Japanese carriers. The American bombers and fighters sortied to attack them as well, taking heavy losses in the process from the skilled Zero fighters. Simultaniously the Japanese carriers launched another attack at Pearl Harbor, battering the old dreadnoughts further.

Force Z and major warships, and also the PT TFs received more agressive and skillful commanders, and it showed as they fought to the end. Repulse looks like a goner and it remains to be seen if PoW can be saved. The Kongos certainly are not well of either.

At least one American cruiser got torpedoed near Pearl Harbor. In the Philippines Manila port was again hit hard, but it was already relatively empty. The air units in Philippines sortied against Japanese landing forces.

Looks like your biggest loses, the amphibious convoy at Samah, were caused by the smallest vessels. Looking forward to the rest of the war.

Spashell is playing the Allied side. Your comments appear aimed at the IJ player?

Good move by Splashell to send those DDs there, but there should be 3 of them. Makes me wonder where the third one is.

In DBB-A, the third one (Thracian I believe) is classified as a DM. These three destroyers withdrew from Hong Kong on the December 9th, got into a fight against 2 TB and 2 PC where they might have sunk 1PC and 1TB. Then they ran into a CL+DD TF which sunk the Scout, but the other 2 escaped for now.

You are doing a fine job confronting lightly escorted landings, he is pushing against the Japanese clock, that ticks ever louder as 41 turns into 42 then 43. This is the best way to slow his roll and force him to provide more robust escorts and therefore he can only accomplish a few landings and can't gobble up all those far flung bases without risk. It argues against the withdraw and protect your ships and planes for the coming counter-offensive. If you don't slow his roll now your counter-offensive will end up being in Central Australia, India or along the line Islands.

Trading Repulse for Kongo and maybe Haruna too (if 5 of those 18 hits were penetrating 15 or 14 inch shells, I don't give her much chance) is a very good outcome. If you lose Prince of Wales too, I call it a draw if both IJN BBs are gone. They have only 12 in the game on only six are fast enough to keep up with KB. Killing two of those will thin KB's defences and cut down on long distance bombardment runs.

Do not try to repair PoW in Singapore - his bombers will be all over her before you get much repair done. Hide her away on a devious route south, then west to CT. Use dot hexes to hole up in at the end of each turn until your are out of range of his bombers. (Some Nell models can reach 26 or 28 hexes, but not with torps).

Thanks for the advice. They actually survived remarkably well after the initial battle, PoW only paint scratches basically (17 SYS, 11 ENG, non major). Repulse was at 48 SYS/24 6 (major) ENG/21 float. On the combat replay it looked worse than it was. It was a complete knife fight against the Kongos, at a few thousand yards range and could potentially have been worse with all the torps swimming around. Good thing DDs were mostly fighting DDs though and not the capital ships.

I would say PoW was very capable for another fight at max speed of 24 knots, until I stupidly left here in Singapore where she ate 2 torps for nothing a turn ago. It looked like she needs +200 days in the yard. I think less than 20 knots make BC/BBs sitting ducks to DDs and cruiser torpedoes, so not willing to risk it. There are still sizable cruiser forces present, and the PT boats are nimble little beasts. They can easily move around refueling on islands/bases which have a little surplus fuel left to unexpected places. Singapore is indeed not viable for very long.

I can say the sub arm is also really pulling their weight and taking hits as well, but it is very much shallow water you have to fight in. What is most important is we've succesfully delayed Japanese establishing airbases in north Borneo or the eastern DEI (especially torpedo capable bases) but SIGINT and recon is telling me, that this is very likely changing soon. A pull back is necessary. After that, it's pretty much game over for DEI, though there are still some strong points to be defended as long as possible. Time is an important ally.

December 11th 1941 major events:
-2 yard oilers fleeing Manila sunk

-SS KXIII puts 1 torp in DD Uranami, listed as on fire and heavy damage. Doesn't list as sunk though though I heard a sinking noise
-1 fleeing xAP sunk off Groot Natoena (I think by incoming Sinkawang invasion escorts)

-DISASTER!! 2 CL sunk of the TF I set to patrol at Sinkawang from Singapore, it decided to react to Kuantan into the Japanese heavy cruiser force! I explicitly ordered it to patrol Sinkawang and Kuching and leaving Singapore it went to Kuantan (TF commander agressiveness 50). Forgot react hexes on 6, didn't realize that. Oh well.

-TK Pinna went down to sub torp, carrying fuel out from Palembang

-Large japanese TFs land units SE of Manila (Mauban), looks like potentially two large TFs

-Fighters out of Sinkawang score 50kg bomb hit on DD Usugumo, approaching Sinkawang invasion and maybe another for Kuching

-Small Japanese CVE/CVL Vals sink fleeing xAK near Iwo Jima. Good to know where they are.
-Another Japanese TF spotted in Celebes going south NE of Tarakan, looks like an invasion TF to me
-CV Yorktown sinks 1xAK and 1xAKL at Tarawa and damages another
-Landing barges still present at Kuantan where there is 10 units, 27k troops and 195 guns. At least 2 divisions worth
-3 divisions from Wuchang shock attack Chinese corps west of Wuchang, which surrendered. Left it in the open. My bad
-Hong Kong forts reduced to 2, 2 full divisions attacking. It won't hold long.

Checked again and regarding the CL TF reacting to Kuantan, in fairness nothing else was spotted there than the landing barges (DL 9/10). That's probably why they went after them and got ambushed and IJN CAs might have happened to move there on the same turn, though I had very good air search all the way to Saigon in the Siam Gulf.

Early in the game a lot of the patrol aircraft squadrons have poor NavS ratings, so you may have good search arc coverage but not necessarily experienced eyeballs.

-CA Louisville sinks a few merchants at Madang, where an IJNAF coy was dropped and small SLNF coy was dropped off
-SS Triton puts 2 torps into CM Tokiwa at Roi-Namur
-Japanese capture Kweiteh, San Fernando, Mauban, Temuloh, Sambas east of Sinkawang and Hong Kong
-Catalina puts 500lb bomb on CA Ashigara. IJN CAs and DD TFs are hanging at Kuantan
-Hong Kong PT boats, no where to go, attack Samah again finding 2DD and 1 TB and withdraw losing 1 PT boat
-KB moving west towards Wake Island, oilers spotted a bit SSE of KB
-Netties attack Singapore sinking one Dutch CM
-Mini KB NE of Ambon, sinks at least 4 xAK/Ls and AM at Ambon
-Japanese finally capture Khota Bharu on the 14th
-1 Japanese division and 2 mixed brigades advancing towards Yenan, am considering abandoning as this base is hard to defend and not much value
-3 Japanese divisions look to be advancing to a head-on assault against Chengchow
-1 Japanese division pushed back across the river west of Nanchang

So overall, the Japanese spearhead is gathering on Singapore marching down from Temuloh. 27 units, 33k troops and nearly 300 guns spotted in Kuantan, and atleast 2 large CA/CL TFs and a bunch of merchant shipping. I suspect they might be attempting to amphibiously invade Mersing or Johore Bharu. Everything and everyone on Malaya has been already railed down to Johore Bharu and Singapore. Probably a little over worth a division are marching to Manila, and a few tank units and SNLFs towards Clark Field, as far as I can see.

What is notable that neither Sinkawang or Manado have not yet fallen. Mini KB is near Ambon at this point. We have good air search coverage almost on the whole eastern DEI extending to Babeldaob, but not necessarily search skills like BBfanboy noted. At least we know when something is coming out of there. I'd say the initiative in the DEI for allies has otherwise been lost, Singapore needs to hold as long as possible and then Java. (Not going to details about Java defensive strategy just yet).

December 15-16th major events:

-A big event was a landing attempt on Mersing by those (probably) same barges which had been spotted for several days at Kuantan. I suspected that these barges sitting in Mersing might be actually empty, and an attempt to pull the cruiser force based on CA Houston and 2CLs into a trap. The barges were covered by a Japanese heavy cruiser force, which clashed with the Houston force, during both nights, but both fights left inconclusive leaving the barges vulnerable. My opponent says they failed to unload, I'm not sure what's the case but barges are slow and might have ended up in the hex with no ops points. 155 combat squads and 39 support squads were sunk (2500 casualties, I wonder what unit this was attempting the landing)

-Heavy bombing of Clark Field airfield on both days. Fierce air combat at both Clark and Singapore

-JNAF unit captures Attu island

-Batangas was captured, looks like, effectively a litte over divisions worth of troops and assault value heading to Manila, unless reinforcements

-Japan captures Paotow, pushing two understrength Chinese corps back

-3 fleeing xAKLs sunk north of Kuching by CL Isuzu

-2 Japanese AV and 1 SC sunk at Kuantan

-Wake Island and Jolo were captured

So does that performance of the sub SS Tuna make it "the chicken of the sea?"

No, I'm just joking. And the captain won't be sent to the Gulag either.

I can imagine how hard a duel like that would be. A cargo ship at full speed at 12-14kt zig zagging and shooting back might IRL be quite hard to hit on the surface with torpedoes. Zig zagging requires a solution where basically the input speed and angle on bow is averaged out (i.e. reduced and guesstimated on the fly). Also I think the torpedo loaders must have been eating spinach that day.

I actually checked the crew on Tuna the previous day. The experience gain they got that day was quite big, day/night 54/54 -> 60/54, so maybe they will do better next time. The captain has a good naval skill of 63, but low aggression of 33, and Tuna was initially set on a minelaying mission so maybe they were caught by surprise on the surface as well.

December 20th major events:

-SS Argonaut puts a torpedo in CL Yubari near Wake Island
-RO-60 sinks an xAK near Rabaul
-SS Trout fires 2 torps at DD Kisaragi near Truk and misses. Also oilers where spotted here a few days ago (torps fired and missed)
-I-7 sinks an xAKL at Dutch Harbor
-I-124 sinks an xAKL near Pamekasan
-Subs shadow invasion fleet from Truk towards SSW (Rabaul/Kavieng, earlier Kavieng invading SNLF coy wiped out of attrition)
-I-7 puts torp in another xAK at Dutch Harbor
-Nells and Betties bomb Singapore harbor, scoring some bomb hits on various ships, including CL Reuter and DD Banckert, xAK, xAP and a CM. Many bombers were wiped out by defending Buffaloes
-Looks like a Japanese armored/cav push starting towards Lanchow, the corps in the mountains at Paotow get pushed out
-Sinkawang holds a day or few more against overwhelming odds, Manado assault was launched at 1:3 odds and failed
-Disaster strikes on Luzon where a counterattack was made at Lingayen, only to find a couple of extra divisions there. What followed was disaster and probably accelerates Luzon fall
