I screwed up my Mobile Artillery and undersized the engine which I didn't realize until I built it, so I updated the model with the model design council. But when I try to update it in the field I see the update button is greyed out with the message "This model cannot be updated". I'm noticing the same thing for my recon buggy as well.

What am I missing here?

You need to redesign them in the model council. THe ones you've build can't be upgraded to the newer model (nor replaced which kinda annoys me), so the only thing i've found is scrap them once you have researched and build the newer type.

I also thought you could change an engine size on a model with later redesign. This will be news to me.

It's a game rule. Quote from the manual:

quote:

5.10.12. uPGradInG trooPs
[...]
At the moment only Infantry, MG and RPG can be upgraded.

(Very end of the section.)

The message should probably rather be « This model cannot be upgraded. »

However, according to that thread : https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4826633, and if I understood correctly, you should be able to Replace other types with a newer model. Just make sure you applied the latest beta patch.

Hmm... I've obviously upgrade mechanical units. Do you mean specifically that the engine type can't be changed later? Good to know if so. As an aside, creating models with big engines tanks (pun intended) my fuel economy and strains my logistics.

I'll admit I'm starting to get a little confused in the terminology between Updating and Upgrading, either a Model or an actual sub Unit.

So far the only thing I can do for them is to scrap the entire formation, which I'm not a huge fan of. Replace or Upgrade are both grayed out.

Update the model. Beware AFAIK, electrical engines cannot upgrade from diesel engines. Probably same goes to nuclear engines.

Good point. OP is talking about being unable to upgrade units from type A to type B because design type B did not inherit from design type A.

I'm talking about updating design A to design B instead of starting a new design B. So if I get a high velocity guns and I want to update my existing light tank unit "Crusader" with 80% field testing to "Crusader II" with high-velocity guns, I had assumed I could change the caliber of the weapon, the thickness of the armor, and the size of the engine as well. I'm pretty sure I've done that...

Sorry, I think I should clarify. I can not upgrade units that inherited from each other. So I have a batallion of Cross Billy's. I upgrade the Cross Billy model design to Cross Billy 2. I can not upgrade my currently existing Cross Billy to Cross Billy 2. I also can't Replace them. The only option I have is Scrap.

This is the case for any model that has an engine in it. I have been able to upgrade my infantry without a problem.

Install the open beta. There is a bug with replace which it fixes

Then a) Produce new version in SHQ
b) DO a replace.
c) In SHQ scrap the old to recover some resources

Ok, I had installed the 1.02 that's in the main 1.02 thread, but maybe not the latest beta. I'll update and see how different it looks.

Once Deployed, Vehcile (and artillery) can not be upgraded. You can only build new ones that replace the old ones in the units. You can send the old ones back to HQ for emergencies, or scrap them.
Updaging only applies to Infantery variants, it seems.

I've produced Crusader II in my SHQ and want to replace some Crusader I that are deployed, however the "Replace" button is greyed out with a mouseover of "This Model Type cannot be Replaced". I tried setting Crusader I to obsolete in the management screen but that didn't make a difference. I've also checked that I have the right amount produced and logistic points available.

While checking all of these things I've just noticed that my nearby MG have both Replace and Upgrade available, I thought they couldn't be replaced, at least according to the manual.

Any idea what's going on? I have the latest patch installed.

In my game, the "replace" button is only repaired if I start a new game.

I dislike this rule intensely. It creates unnecessary complexity for the player and UI to satisfy a minor economic rule. If the issue is LP to deliver a brand new model weight, then I would recommend everything be replace.

I think the point of being able to also replace infantry is to give you more options.
Say you have green brand new model troops in SHQ. Your could upgrade the gear of part of you veteran 1st battalion and replace the rest with the green guys, and they'll benefit from the bonus to XP gain provided by the veterans being in the same unit. And then raise a new formation with the veterans you pulled back (also with upgraded gear of course) and some more green guys.

Yes, you're certainly in your right to dislike this rule, Malevolence. I have yet to experience its inconvenience in its full force, so I'll just keep it at that for now.
