Is there a guide on how to use the workbook? More specifically on how to save changes? I borked my install trying to make a simple change (adding more ammo to Garand rifleman), i saved as a ms-dos txt, replaced soldiers.txt, started up the game and all my units were gone, loaded up the tutorial and nothing appeared. Thank you for any help.

Here you can find some modding guides https://firefoxccmods.proboards.com/board/22/close-combat-bloody-first-modding and the developers made this file https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZjsmoAmFBgiQAC3aCr3J6yhiH6OmbNDljWsiSXX_CSw/edit

If you want edit files, you must use the workbook as a reference and edit the files, I recomend you read the guide from the developers about how create a mods folder and avoid to edit the main files. At the same time, thw workbook can be edited with Microsoft Excell or Google spreadsheets. I do not recomend you make changes with notepad because they are tab delimitation files.

I think the easiest way to move data from the workbook to the data file is to open the data file in notepad, open the workbook, and then cut & paste the rows and columns you need from the workbook to the text file in notepad, then save it from notepad.

Note that the actual game data does not include any of the column headers at the top of the workbook. The first row you want is usually the one with the count of entries.
