I've got better equipment now (MGs and tanks) but don't know how to upgrade troops in the field.

In both cases you'll need to select the unit you want to update. Then click on the image of the unit type you want to upgrade/replace.

For the MG, you should be able to just do an upgrade and your unit will be upgraded with the new equipment.

For the tanks, you'll need to do a replace. For the replacement to work you'll need to have enough of the vehicle type in the SHQ replacement pool to cover all or portions of the unit.

In each case you'll need to be near enough a supply pickup point and supply capacity needs to be a consideration.

I know you can give your SHQ equipment which will be distributed for reinforcements automatically. Is there any way to automatically upgrade equipment? E.G. I have 10 infantry units with 10x100 infantry each. I make Mk II infantry equipment, other than letting them die and be replaced is there any way to just build the new stuff and let them replace it?

Yes, click on the unit you want to update. Then click on the image of the unit type that you're upgrading click on the upgrade button. You'll be taken to a screen that asks you to upgrade 'unit type'. The list below should show you the available upgrades, select the amount and then click the upgrade button and the unit should be upgraded.

It may not be available if you're too far from a supply pickup point. So it works best if you're on or near a depot/supply line.

I'm aware of that, I asked if there was an automatic way. With troop quality there seems to be a way to mass replace in every unit (obsolete or disallowed equipment), but that seems to also send back everything. It seems you must either I. manually upgrade, II. let upgrades be replacement only or III upgrade everything at once.

Sorry, those three appear to be the only automatic way of upgrading the units that I know of. Probably better that way as you wouldn't want to have your supply line shutdown because all of your units are using up the trucks upgrading.

Actually it turns out "tolerated" gear will be actively replaced if allowed gear of the same type is available, which is exactly what I wanted. It appears to be rather slow, so probably doesn't strain logistics much.

III: no. The mass upgrade option has a slider, so you're able to, for instance, upgrade fifty of your hundred infantry at once.
