Sub vs Sub: SS I-7 attacking SS Hoe at 146,91

Japanese Ships
SS I-7

Allied Ships
SS Hoe, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage

like I've said before, the game does have it's problems to simulate damage to ships when it comes down to what would be a sure kill... Hoe was reported hit by Helens several times, then she had to retire from her patrol... being damaged she ran over one of my RO subs which hit her with a torp but Hoe just sailed on as if she would be a battleship... it takes another torp from I-7 to sink that sub which makes it several 250kg bombs and two torps to sink that sub...

SS I-7 launches 2 torpedoes at 3,000 yards

the 4Es don't do that much damaged, most likely the heavy flak concentration there made it more difficult but in the end none of the many damaged bombers crashed or was a write off... none...

as the Frank is no longer a secret the IJAAF ordered a fighter sweep from Madras to Jaffna where recon reported some 100 enemy fighters... was first shocked to see 50 Lightnings showing up in the replay but they must have been on training as they didn't take part in the action nor are they mentioned in the combat report... so the Franks only faced an equal number of obsolete Dutch fighters and some Warhawks... the Franks completely tore the enemy apart, killing one enemy fighter after another... two Franks were lost over Jaffna with one more being write offs for over two dozen enemy fighters shot down, we scored a 15:1 in A2A... amazing result but it shouldn't deceive us as we had third generation fighters going in against Allied first generation fighters which weren't even a real threat to Tojos a year ago... while being a nice result it's not meainingful when it comes down to the Frank's performance...

enemy heavy bombers attack Port Moresby for the third day in a row but they still fail to close the airfield as it seems flak is reducing accuracy and the engineers at the base work hard... third day, only one bomber lost so far... at the same time we have lost 8 aircraft on nav search / ASW...

I do not know whether the mod changes something, but the main element for protecting your sea routes is to have a lot of FP in daily+night NavS plus some LB in ASW. And some TF of "free hunters" for enemy subs.
The amount of escort ships per-convoy is relevant, but I do not see is as essential as the former elements of the mix.

Once you have a good share of Es available, you can enjoy relative safety on your routes. I have something like 20-30 permanently out of Onshu and I have lost very few cargo ships so far. Many Es have been sunk, though.

Also, since your air war is extremely peaceful, I guess you can devote a decent amount of production to ASW assets such as FPs and 2Es.

I have roughly 300 Helen flying ASW, all are between 70 and 85 ASW skill plus 100 Judies same skill. Add in some 300 Jakes on nav search on my shipping routes. Had also around 8-10 ASW task forces, all consisted of 1 DD plus 3 E. They were patrolling for several months, reacting around like chicken each turn, sinking exactly 0 subs for the loss of 3 or 4 E. All those ASW groups had the best available commanders.

As nothing worked I was putting all those vessels from ASW groups into convoys. No idea if or what the mod would change, in vanilla (looong ago) as well as Babes games I was sweeping the sealanes clear of enemy subs, never had a problem dealing with them when I was devoting such an effort to ASW.

Wow! That's tough! I am only 6 months ahead of you and I have literally zero problems in sinking enemy subs. So far in 1943 I just had a single Tonan-Class torpedoed north of Amami Oshima and she even survived.
I run big convoys. For TKs for example I am just unloading a convoy of 25 ships, of which only 3 are escorts.

Maybe I will find maaaany people opposing what I say, but I found that the reaction to ASW TFs is problematic. I stopped putting the reaction and the guys are doing pretty well, keeping a decent kill/deaths ratio of 1 sub killed per 1.5 E sunk (I count as "killed" only subs which are forced to emerge and sunk).

I run ASW TF of 4 ships, arranged accordingly to the DC they mount (Type 2 in deep waters and DC-95 in shallow ones).

Helen with such a high skill should do wonders in keeping subs at bay!

Also, on a side note, it's quite bizarre that you have such a immense ratio in VPs. In a PBEM similar to this one, the one I mentioned above, I am at roughly 3,5 : 1 at the end of 1943 but I haven't achieved the 4 : 1 in Jan-43. Not even remotely.

It would be interesting for me to compare industrial statistics and the strategic situation. Also, getting India with so few a/c lost looks incredible to me!

I was using something like 500 IJAAF medium bombers in China but there was no need to do so in India. I would have if there were a must to do so but instead I used the IJA as the real hammer as I had something like 8-10000 av operating there, including the three tank divs and all tank rgts. I never planned to go further than the Calcutta area but we were given some opportunities to destroy more Commonwealth troops so we kept advancing. End result was India taken with pretty much all Allied units destroyed there, capturing 1,5 mio tons of supply and a couple of hundred thousand tons of fuel.

Current Industrial status is something like 5,2 mio tons of supply, 5 mio tons of fuel and 1,2 mio HI points. Also 270,000 arm and 37,000 vehicle points. We have the George, Frank, Judy (last version) and Jill and the A6M5 (since mid 42). Musashi has been built, Taiho and two Unryus commissioned.

As to the victory point ratio, keep in mind that I took all of China (destroying all Chinese units there) and literally all of India (also destroying the majority of units there) and we destroyed dozens of cruisers, destroyers, two BBs and four USN CVs in mid 42. All this for more or less no losses, as it has cost us only 3 fleet DDs. Not trying to sound too arrogant but we have done maximum damage to the enemy while suffering minimal losses. Not a cakewalk though, things can go wrong and the situation can change within a day.

Mundy's decision of forward defense matched perfectly with my strategy and he paid the maximum price. If he wouldn't have tried that kind of forward defense and did a full Sir Robin I would be on the losing end already.

Yeah it looks precisely as my madness, but I am wondering if I did something wrong since I am now 3,37 : 1 in Dec-1943

My opponent is very very experienced, with several games into 1945. I think his forward defence of Calcutta has been a mistake in the long run. I landed in Diamond Harbour on 28 Jan 1942 just to isolate Burma and protect Magwe. He committed everything in Calcutta defence and it turned out badly.

Probably you can grasp better than me where you have outperformed me so much (and maybe.... share your thoughts about this delta - it would be really helpful since I have not many ideas on what to do):

Hard to say, you sure have way more airlosses than me but you also have nearly 20k more victory points. Not sure if the games can be compared, my opponent has only 9k victory points left at the moment.

Afternoon Air attack on Jaffna , at 31,45

P-40E Warhawk: 1 destroyed
P-38G Lightning: 2 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:
14 x Ki-84a Frank sweeping at 31000 feet

hmmm... ordered this sweep out of boredom actually and it turned out to be a silly idea as there's just no need to do so and every pilot lost is a waste... the Franks come in at 31k feet and guess what, the Lightnings were diving on them... the dive being the only real thing important in the A2A routine the Franks were pretty badly shot up, it's absolutely amazing not more were shot down as most only got damaged...

CAP engaged:
1-Vl.G.IV with P-40E Warhawk (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
(2 plane(s) diverted to support CAP in hex.)

Allied aircraft losses
P-38G Lightning: 4 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:
24 x Ki-84a Frank sweeping at 31000 feet

second sweep did way better than the first one but again, the Lightnings were diving way more often than the Franks... end result is more or less a 1:1 as many Franks were write offs at the end of the day... what totally struck me though were the pilot losses: 1... in words: ONE those are really high exp pilots but it seems the only pilot lost was the one that was directly shot down over Jaffna, all others were able to bring their damaged fighter back to Madras... WOW!

Those look like crazy-low A/C losses for a game in 1943. 130 Tojos? That's about a month's worth of losses for me. Looks like there just hasn't been alot of air combat, period, as Allied losses are also low....

yup, not going to engage in the air if I haven't to. If the enemy wants to bomb an airfield I can easily repair, let him bomb. If he wants to sweep, let him sweep. If I see a real reason to engage, I'm usually going to throw in the kitchen sink.

By far the most losses are the Jakes, all lost on nav search to ops, without ever being near enemy carriers.

here's the real happening this turn as long range nav search picked up an Allied fleet consisting of several enemy task forces East of the Marshalls, heading West... the aircraft was shot down but was able to detect quite an enemy fleet and I'm pretty sure this is going to be an Allied offensive operation...

ALERT! This is no drill! Enemy convoys are nearing the Marshalls and it definately doesn't look like a small raid, this must be the long awaited Allied offensive in 1943. With the Commonwealth being more or less knocked out at this date and the failed offensive against Darwin I had my bets on either Port Moresby or the Marshalls/Gilberts and therefore the majority of the Kaigun was based at Truk awaiting any Allied move. The Allied Armada seems to be huge, several search aircraft were shot down today but they were able to detect a lot of different task forces including at least two carrier groups. Also lots of four ship task forces, might be ASW groups. The enemy heads directly towards the Marshalls so I'm expecting enemy landings at the usual targets like Roi Namur, Kwajalein, Wotje and Maloelap, all these bases have pretty much as good defenses as those small atolls can have, well knowing you can't defend an atoll with a stacking limit of 6000 troops if the assault is done with the right force. Kaigun is moving at normal speed to a position East of Eniwetok to get into a position North of the expected enemy position and then we will plan our strike. I'm not rushing in to engage the enemy carriers as there's not much hope to destroy them instantly without taking return damage and to stop the landings, I'm trying to wear them down over the next couple of turns and then strike them coming from their rear.

Allied fleet is moving slowly, the carriers are in the lead and my long range search has spotted something I'd identify as a replenishment TF that is following the enemy carriers... Kido Butai took position 90 miles NE of Eniwetok already while the enemy strike force is closing in on the marshalls... we have a small convoy at Maloelap that was spotted by a Dauntless more than once but the enemy carriers didn't fly a strike which is a pity as I had 84 Franks covering the convoy unloading supplies at that base... we have lost no less than 12 search aircraft today so I'm sure the enemy has brought his full carrier fleet... with the loss of four USN CVs in mid 42 I'm not 100% sure what we can expect to meet, I know he has Wasp and Hornet left from last year, perhaps one or two Brit CVs that don't matter much, most likely two or three Essex CVs that were commissioned, unknown number of new CVLs and something like 6-10 CVE (?)... in total I expect him to bring something like 7-800 carrier based aircraft max, this is he is coming with everything he has... a formidable strike force but no way a death start yet considering that a good number of brittle CVE are accounting for something like a quarter of his aircraft capacity... Hellcats are available and Mundy mentioned earlier that he also receives Helldivers (hate those divebombers) but I doubt he has received enough Hellcats already to equip all his fighter squadrons yet, let alone enough Helldivers for his dive bomber squadrons... he surely has all Avengers already but the main threat for the fleet are the divebombers...

this will met by close to 1100 IJN carrier based aircraft of which some 700 are fighters (A6M5), 500 for the defense and 200 for the offense... all dive bomber squadrons have been upgraded to the D4Y4 Judy so our dive bombers will also be a threat to his BBs at 6 hexes range as the 800kg bomb should reliably be able to penetrate BB armor at the right spots... the torpedo squadrons are equipped with the B6N2 Jill, carrying a torpedo to a distance of eight hexes... the fleet has commissioned two Unryu carriers already which are with the fleet with another one (Katsuragi) just being commissioned at Hiroshima but she will be late to join the party...

the plan for the next couple of days is to whittle down enemy carrier strenght with my land based fighters as my Franks and Georges should be more than a match for Allied carrier based fighters, the Hellcat is inferior and the Wildcat should be pretty much meat against them...

the battle is on... enemy carrier groups took position in the hex between Maloelap and Wotje and launch their first strike... we had quite a number of low value ships still at Roi Namur with two Frank units covering the base at 100% CAP when Allied SBDs spotted the ships... while no strikes were flown at my ships at Maloelap yesterday I thought the enemy might have pure defensive orders without any strike orders against shipping but it might only have been bad weather preventing strikes at that day... considering my ships are pretty much not worth any bigger strike I was surprised to see the Allied carriers launch such a massive strike against them and 80 Franks of coures couldn't stop it but while it might have been a disaster for the pixel ship crews it was a real disaster for the Allied commander as the Franks really shot up the enemy strike, downing dozens of enemy aircraft... the majority of escorts were Wildcats with is very good news, as expected they were no match for the Franks...

pretty much the same has happened at Mili where we had these ships also being covered by two Frank units with the exact same outcome, the incoming strike was shred while the remaining bombers then pretty much annihilated my small freighters... this strike had way more Hellcats as escorts but being tied to the bombers they were no match for the Franks... this is the start of the needed attrition of Allied carrier air...

while there was no more strike against Roi Namur we were lucky as the enemy also launched a strike in the afternoon against Mili where we still had 75 Franks waiting for the Allied... more than a formidable escort for not even two dozen bombers meant that the Franks were tangling with the enemy fighters longer downing them in droves and the escorts still couldn't really help the bombers as also the majority of SBDs were shot down...

we had 15 short range subs (I and RO class) stationed in the Marshalls and they were all ordered to leave port yesterday to flood the area between the atolls, pretty much all of them were spotted by air search today... we lost over a dozen aircraft of several types on air search today, with the recent losses those units are down to very low numbers and we had to fly in two fresh search units already to have a good picture on enemy naval movement... Kido Butai will move a couple of hexes further to the East, staying way out of range of Allied carrier air to the North East of the Marshalls, so if Mundy isn't ordering a crazy Ivan and sprints his carriers North we should stay unspotted tomorrow as it seems he has also focussed all his subs further South around the Marshalls...

here are today's air losses, a disastrous day for the Allied... two convoys of low value ships at Roi Namur and Mili attracted several hundred enemy aircraft that were met by 160 Franks on CAP resulting in a slaughter as our fighters claim no less than 150+ enemy carrier based aircraft for only three Franks lost... felt like an IJN's Turkey Shoot in the Marshalls...

there were lots of Avengers, which surely means the enemy has a good number of CVEs in the area as the ratio between dive and torpedo bombers would look different if it would be fleet carriers... also way more Wildcats in the fleet than expected, the enemy needs more Hellcats badly and even they aren't a real match for my land based fighters even though they will outperform the A6M5 on my carriers but that is more than compensated by the fact that my A6M5 should outperform the high number of Wildcats...

I expect naval bombardments at Roi Namur and Mili tomorrow so the fighters at Mili will withdraw (the remaining ships will move South) and we have ordered a heavy cruiser group to sprint to Roi Namur during the night where we have bolstered the CAP with a George unit to cover the cruisers during the day if the enemy decides to strike again... with no idea about the whereabouts of KB and the horrendous losses to his air arm I hope the enemy might not strike again tomorrow and the cruisers will survive this, even though the attrition of his carrier based aircraft is still the most important thing to make our plan work...

Kido Butai revealed it's position as the carriers launch several strikes today... this is a strike at 8 hexes range so we have moved the carriers too close to the enemy (wanted to start my strikes no earlier than tomorrow) and to my surprise I saw the Jills bombing as I could have bet I were setting all of them to torps which I didn't... means not even KB was revealed but this strike on a big amphib TF with no less than two modern and an old BB was a total waste as the 500kg bombs can't harm the BBs and the hit rate was poor anyways in thunderstorms... flak fire gave the bombers a first taste of what is to come as it was extremely heavy over the ships... not a good start for the carriers...

OUCH! My heavy cruisers take position at Roi Namur to cover the base against a naval bombardment during the night and to draw an airstrike into a 120 fighter CAP of Frank/Georges... and it turns out to be another mistake of mine because A) there wasn't an attempt to bombard Roi Namur (and if there would have been, it wouldn't even really matter as I have several airfields in the region) and B) the heavy cruisers attracted such a high attention that they take heavy damage...

while we had great success with 2x80 Franks on CAP yesterday it turns out disastrous today as 120 fighters weren't able to even somewhat reduce the number of bombers to levels my cruisers could sustain... I wasn't afraid of the Avengers as I thought my cruisers could evade them but I knew the dive bombers with their 1000lb bombs would be deadly and that's exactly how it turned out as two of the CA took four hits each...

afternoon strikes now... again bad weather but at least not thunderstorms again... this time we have torpedo carrying Jills in the attack and they score several hits on the BBs while modern BB Washington takes three and is left heavily damaged... noted several non penetrating belt armor hits of torps in this campaign already, it's always a die roll in this mod if a torp actually penetrates or not... same with the 800kg bombs, they don't always penetrate BBs armor...

while this was ugly to watch for me as Kako takes another penetrating 1000lb bomb... she and Furutaka suffered high sys dam and heavy fires while not much eng/flt, doubt I will be able to save them... it was a smaller strike than in the morning and CAP was doing it's best increasing today's tally...

really seems like it's the rather small strikes that really hurt the enemy today as both Indiana and Washington shouldn't survive these strikes... BANZAI! intensity of flak fire isn't comparable anymore to what it was during the first strikes...

17 x B6N2 Jill launching torpedoes at 200 feet

one of the features I hate so much in the game, counter battery fire... so silly, so unrealistic, just a stupid overflow of some routine... the enemy lands which triggers a bombardment by all my units that result in "counter battery fire" of the landing units that instantly renders a whole nav guard unit useless... sitting behind level 5 forts...

Assaulting units:
Kure 3rd SNLF
83rd Naval Guard Unit
23rd Nav Gd Unit
Nimur Naval Fortress

Defending units:
637th Tank Destroyer Battalion
53rd (Sep) Infantry Regiment

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Kwajalein Island (132,115)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 12686 troops, 274 guns, 385 vehicles, Assault Value = 629

Defending force 4873 troops, 74 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 113

Allied adjusted assault: 2

Japanese adjusted defense: 79

Allied assault odds: 1 to 39 (fort level 5)

Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), disruption(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), disruption(-), supply(-)

Japanese ground losses:
858 casualties reported
Squads: 61 destroyed, 39 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 25 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 20 (12 destroyed, 8 disabled)
Vehicles lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
5460 casualties reported
Squads: 163 destroyed, 40 disabled
Non Combat: 97 destroyed, 25 disabled
Engineers: 109 destroyed, 11 disabled
Guns lost 90 (64 destroyed, 26 disabled)
Vehicles lost 222 (175 destroyed, 47 disabled)

then the attacker shock attacks and is shred to pieces... we also lose halve of our garrison but the forts hold but the enemy really takes a beating... landing at the end of the day wasn't a good idea here as not all troops are on the beaches and not enough supply was unloaded... even if it's usuall impossible to hold such a small atoll it seems we have a chance here if we manage to bring reinforcements... no matter the outcome, the enemy has already suffered more losses in death than we even had troops on the atoll, that's exactly the way we want to wage war and it pretty much mirrors the intention of the Japanese in WWII...

after a year of IJ victories followed by months of Sitzkrieg the battle is really on now...

Assaulting units:
138th(Sep) Infantry Rgt /4

Was curious to see your atoll garrisons.
Three small units and a fortress caused a big mess!
