When changing formations to a new one that has less of a subunit than it currently has, the units just seem to sit around in the unit. When I look at the supply tab, I see the returned stat but the request never gets fulfilled despite having logistical points. However, when I set models to obsolete, the units are returned to SHQ no problem.

How do I trigger the return of excess units?

You can change them to something like low or reg instead of obsl and change settings in unit admin. I have seen this before too when trying to change to a siege army. You can manually Replace troops with the button under unit admin and add say arty when they can accept it. I don't know if it changes anything but I think the idea is for them to replenish the new troops from SHQ.

I havnt used it too much and tend to just manual add the new unit type.

I've done that in the instances that I can, but it only works if you have different models that you can set as obsolete
