GloriousRuse & Secret's AAR was nice, so it's coincidental that I came back to write my own on RBS. I'm not well-versed in military life or terminology so my AARs are more abstract but hopefully still enjoyable. Had this one sitting on the backburner as I've been busy lately. With that out the way, here we go.

Initial Setup
The first task is to recon the positions which will be used to organize and consolidate the MRRs and TRs for the attack on Haaren. Securing the road net here is key, with the northwestern town of Lichtenau and the centrally located village of Atteln being immediate objectives. Haaren sits just south of the intersection of the A33 and A44 highways; any defending NATO forces must be destroyed to secure future Soviet advances.

The Altenau and Piepenbach rivers are crossed swiftly, with HQs settling in the wooded terrain between the two in confidence they'll be relatively safe. Recon move to scout the villages of Husen and Dalheim and race towards Lichtenau. The former are protected by a couple minefields but the BRDM-2s clear these with only a single casualty and Lichtenau is captured without resistance. Mi-8MTs buzz around the extreme north and south, trying to spot possible lines of reinforcement and vulnerable flanks. BRDM-2s, including those armed with 9K111 Fagots (AT-4 Spigots), reach the Sauer river and begin repairing the bridge to the plateau north of Atteln. Their orders are to scout it and see if they can get a few shots off at any vulnerable mechanized or motorized forces. A recon platoon also begins constructing a bridge over the Piepenbach river to Dalheim. The centerpieces of the recon effort are the PRP-4 NARDs (Figure 1) and the BRM-3K Rys' (Figure 2): both are equipped with thermal sights and a ground search radar, with the key difference between them being the Rys' 30mm 2A72 autocannon (the NARDs only have a 7.62mm MG). The PRP-4 NARD is thus the stealthier of the two, as Rys crews tend to try their luck. A further two platoons of BRM-1K Korshuns (Figure 3) will arrive shortly with the Guard TRs to act as feelers ahead of their movements. These also have ground radar but are armed with the 2А28 Grom (73mm smoothbore).

Figure 1: PRP-4 NARD with radar extended (source)

Figure 2: BRM-3K Rys with radar extended (source)

Figure 3: BRM-1K Korshun with radar extended (source)

It is soon determined, contrary to initial fears, that the way is clear for the reinforcing Soviet MRRs and TRs to arrive and prepare for the main assault. The territory between the Reingraben and Piepenbach rivers is completely occupied, and at the intersection of the L744 road and the A44 highway minefields and obstacles are slowly cleared to make way for an offensive thrust. This is accomplished in complete peace and it's assumed the enemy have barricaded themselves in and around Haaren; this soon proves accurate as the ground radar recon edges closer to enemy lines, supported by BRDM-2s. Meanwhile, along road L744 a T-80BV regiment with a BMP-1D regiment maneuver to attack Haaren from the south.

Phase 1: Maneuver

The NARD and Rys crews can hardly believe what their radars are telling them. NATO forces, rather than occupying the village of Helmern, are arranged on the raised terrain directly to its northwest. Their mechanized and motorized forces, it seems, have been caught with their metaphorical pants down. Meanwhile BRDM-2s quietly reconstruct bridges across the Reingraben. Unfortunately, NATO have gotten wind of Soviet movements and the BMP-1Ds are caught in an artillery barrage, suffering casualties, while the T-80BVs escape harm. The more information is gleaned from the NATO lines the more it becomes clear there's a golden opportunity to answer their initial barrage. The only problem is the incredibly hostile EW environment hampering the Soviet response.

Recon forces continue to monitor the situation as two 23SM Akatsiyas regiments and a 2S1 Gvozdika regiment ready for a massive barrage. This amounts to 36 152mm guns and 18 122mm guns between them. Command FC gives the order for a neutralizing barrage and over the course of 15 minutes every single tube opens fire. The results are devastating as engine signatures and movements vanish from ground radar, but now NATO are fully aware their opponents have arrived. Unfortunately for them the attack plan is already in motion. Recon elements pushed forward to reconstruct the bridges over Reingraben river have finished unobserved by NATO due to the depressed terrain. T-64BV, T-80BV, BMP-2D, and BMP-1D regiments are waiting nervously for the order to advance. BMP-2Ds gathered around Husen will attack Atteln and Henglarn before swinging south towards Haaren and Helmern through obscuring woodland. T-80BV TRs will cross the Reingraben supported by T-64BVs and BMP-2Ds and utilize the depressed terrain to close on Haaren unseen. The battered BMP-1D regiment, ahead of these, will act from Haaren's south as a feint to draw NATOs attention from the real attack, while a final T-80BV regiment will attempt to flank Haaren through woodland to its west. To the far north, BRDM-2s and Mi-24Vs will close and harass any NATO units they find. Gradually, each regiment receives its orders and prepares for the assault. As per Soviet doctrine, Haaren is shelled to rattle any NATO defenders ahead of the attack -- an area of roughly 2 miles square.

Phase 2: Attack

The attack hits NATO like a sledge hammer. After hours of preparation it is nasty, brutish, and short. As tanks roll forward firing at everything they can see 23SMs and 2S1s hurl constant barrages against selected positions. Hundreds of men die in and around Haaren. Some of the first Soviet casualties were the unfortunate soldiers of the BMP-1D regiment -- NATO tanks catch sight of them and shoot them to pieces, only to be destroyed in turn as a wave of T-80BVs and T-64BVs crest the horizon. BMP-2Ds lock horns with their NATO counterparts in the woods east of Haaren in a bloody shooting gallery and support the tank thrust into Haaren. Before long NATO have been driven out and are fighting with their backs to the river at its rear. Mi-24Vs attempt to flank but are cut down by NATO AD. NATO armor (Leopard 2A1s) puts up a stiff resistance, destroying an exposed BMP-2D company and many T-80BVs, but are eventually overwhelmed by their Soviet counterparts. With their collapse the remaining defenders are wiped out, leaving only their artillery exposed to BRDM-2s in the north. The battle is over.

NATO:
Greetings from the Inspectorate of the General Staff -

To: General, commanding TF Bear

* In the battle of "WL_3rd Red Banner Slam 7" [a user scenario] your forces worth 8,562 points obtained just 25% (5388 vs 15962) of awarded victory points against an enemy force worth 15,272. You should be aware that the Inspectorate considers your performance, on balance, to be disappointing.
* Your heroic death in battle saddens us all.

Destroyed: 16 Recce, 57 Tank, 27 APC, 17 Inf, 12 SP AT, 11 HQ, 13 AD, 15 SPArty, 12 Arty, 59 Utility and 4 Air.

A summary of the battle is below:

The battle section of the AAR is a quite short because I didn't have the time to do an immediate write-up, but it's also reflective of the match that I spent most of the game preparing for it. NATO gave me all the room I needed to properly plan and execute the attack, and they paid the price. I'm not really one to gloat over butchering an AI, in any case. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading.

Thanks for sharing. We plan to make things a bit more difficult in Southern Storm when attacking the AI.

Nice AAR, I really like about this Scenario that you have a huge freedom of choice of how to attack. If you manage to get in a good position to start your assault and have your really good recon assets in a position where they can spot many of the concealed defenders for your artillery Nato will have a hard time stopping you.
