Started playing this game and it seemed fairly straight forward at first. But then, the hours have revealed there are many nuances to play in this game it takes time to learn and get a grasp of. Not just the strategy, but the mechanics have nuances to them that are making the game more intriguing the longer I play it.

I can see how it would take playing through a couple of times to get your head wrapped around this game.

To me, that's the sign of an excellent overall design concept.
