OK I had two hexes with a white one in and one with gold. It says something about rare minerals or artefact or some such and mentions scavenging.

My question is how do I go about trying to free this rare thingy? I couldn't work out how to go about it.

You've gotta build a recycling mining facility on it. Then you'll get artifacts randomly over the turns.

You'll also get machinery and sometimes hi-tech parts.

You have to build a Recycling Facility on the artifact.
You can see the rate at bottom right. 1:800 for example means you receive an artifact every 800 SP mined.

Brown - common artifacts. Grey - uncommon artifacts. Gold - rare artifacts. Bone-white - very rare artifacts (poor color selection but we have to deal with it).

Is there a clear correlation to what recycling facilities give machinery or hitech parts? The level of the archeological finds don't seem to matter, nor does the level of the facility (as far as I've noticed?). Is it just random based on the specific ruins hex?

White and gold pyramids? You may have discovered the ancient and legendary planet of Milkquarious.

It's quite random, though I'll say that if there aren't any artifacts on the tile, you probably won't find anything but metal, oil and rare metals. I think the output varies from turn to turn, but I haven't verified it.
