Please consider this your opportunity for a rare Viking INP.

Not all that rare, in my humble opinion. If I do get one per year then I got more than enough.

And, also, it depends on how you define Viking. If an American has some English, or Irish ancestry, or Scandinavian, or Slavic, or French, and so on and so forth, then there is a decent chance there is some Viking ancestry in the mix as well. And that might be enough to qualify?

So King Willie the Ba$tard was a Viking?

Nah.

Then there might not be many that qualify.

Or unless it depends on how you define yourself?

He had Viking ancestry, but he was a Norman. He was the 7th Duke, I think, of Normandy so it had been a while since they had been Viking raiders.

He had learned how to say, "All your kingdom belong to me" in French.

Thank you, Zorch, for the information.

I do however feel the headline is very misleading since the article author have no idea on how deadly this strain of smallpox were.

True. Accurate metrics are hard to come by for semi-illiterate people being killed by other semi-illiterate people.

Well, if you haven't been vaccinated you can volunteer to test it out.

Otherwise, I am sure that there are people on Death Row and/or terrorists who could try it out.

Well. After reading that article, I do not think that this strain of smallpox was very deadly at all. If the Vikings would have brought an deadly plague to Britain, then I am sure that the priests would have written a lot about it. And archaeologists would have found a lot of Saxon graves with smallpox victims and so on. As I read it, they do not even know if the Vikings themselves died of the disease.

Exactly.

Generally speaking, unless you're a politician that stands to benefit from picayune amounts of genetic heritage (say, less than 5% Native American, as an example ) societal thresholds are to include at least 25% (and usually 50%) from most backgrounds to really 'count'. I am 50% French Canadian, 12% German, 12% Swedish, 12% Irish and the balance "who knows". Insufficient to identify as anything approximating Viking. Sorry man.

And don't call me Frenchie either.

It gets down to 1 or 2 percent even, which can show up from trading long ago in Europe or even from the friendly Huns and Mongols when they visited Europe.

I define myself as human, when it comes to race. I point out that one selection on race is actually if you come from an area where a certain language is the predominant one.

My ethnicity is something else.

After four hours of the humidity detector, I went to the store and I was back half an hour later. The detector was not going off.

But the store would not let me use a certain card but the person in charge did not seem to like the fact that I was willing to pay cash. So I said something like "I don't get my food? Then I am not coming back here!" The store does have high prices compared to others in the next town but it is a small store but with a good deli and they cut up their own meat - even smoke some as well. It is a block and a half away.

Up these parts almost no retail establishments were willing to take cash, which on reflection I thought interesting since it is legal tender here in the States. Meanwhile all my contractors wanted nothing but cash. Which makes sense for a couple of reasons. My bank up here has a single drive up teller. If you don't get there first thing in the am and there are half a dozen cars in front of you it would take literally an hour to get up to the window. They even have the lobby doors locked so you cannot get to the ATM.

I keep hoping to wake up from this nightmare.

The main bank that I go to has a drive up ATM. They do open the lobby now but it is limited. Earlier in late winter, someone got injured when they had apparently walked up to the drive thru teller and got runded over.

It's been a very enjoyable Saturday here so far. Spent time at the range with my wife this morning, some time at the pool this afternoon, chatted with an old friend for a good while, and looking forward to a bike ride this evening. I'll take it.

How ironic! So did I!

Technically, he was quite a bit older than I am, so I chatted with an older friend.

@USS Mike: Saw the Orioles beat up on the Red Sox today! Nice! That means that the Orioles won't finish more than 58 games below .500!

Don't count your chickens before they're CB'ed. I'm sure the Orioles will try to sink down to that challenge...

All I have to say is that the NHL Playoffs start next Saturday at noon, with my Carolina Hurricanes kicking off the action in the first game.
