According to today's regulators and bureaucrats,
those of us who were kids in the 40's, 50's, 60's,
or even maybe the early 70's probably shouldn't have survived.

Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors
or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets.
(Not to mention the risk s we took hitchhiking.)

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day
was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a
bottle. Horrors!

We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop
with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because
we were always outside playing.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one
bottle, and no one actually died from this.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of
scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out
we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times,
we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day,
as long as we were back when the street lights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day.
No cell phones. Unthinkable!

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes,
no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable,
video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones,
personal computers, or Internet chat rooms.

We had friends! We went outside and found them.
We played dodge ball, and sometimes, the ball would really hurt.

We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and
teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents?
We had fights and punched each other and got black
and blue and learned to get over it.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate
worms, and although we were told it would happen,
we did not put out very many eyes,
nor did the worms live inside us forever.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked
on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Some students weren't as smart as others, so they
failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. Horrors!
Tests were not adjusted for any reason.
Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law
was s unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!

This generation has produced some of the best
risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever.
The past 50 years have been an explosion
of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility,
and we learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them!
Congratulations.

Please pass this on to others who have had the luck
to grow up as kids, before lawyers and government
regulated our lives, for our own good...

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with
scissors, doesn't it?

We used to fill in the cracks on the sidewalk with a mixture of dirt, water and rocks? It was our special "8 year old blend" cement!

We used to go fishing down by the lake all the time. I'll never forget snagging my first 25 pound salmon! :D

We used to get in trouble for not coming home at dinner time because we were deep into a good "insert sport here" game.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!
I'll never forget about the trouble I got in when the cops would drag me in for blowing off fireworks in the street. Who knew that it was an undercover cop car driving down the road... :D

So many great memories, so many lessons, so many experiences. I really hope common sense and imagination come back from their vacation before it's too late.

I remember my youth and today's world. There is good and bad in everything though.

As a youth girls were just people that peed funny. Sex education wasn't needed like it is today. If I disappeared into the woods with a girl, it was so we could climb the trees.

It was not considered abnormal to be in the house at 9 oclock either, regardless of lighting conditions. I was never watched while outside, I just had to be within a scream of my name in distance.

There was NO swearing in my parents house, because soap tastes horrible. My mother didn't like my music, but it wasn't near what is considered ordinary today for lyrics.

My toys were all great. They were impossible to break, and simple to use. They didn't need batteries, and the only sounds they made were the ones I made while using them.

But I have to admit, I don't miss Russian Communism.
I don't miss the phrase duck and cover.
I am glad my military service didn't include fighting in Europe.
In short, I don't want the 1940's to 1980's to return.

I have marvelled at the magnitude of space thanks to modern space technology.
I have met people online, that have become better friends than half the people I live with in town.
I am able to communicate with like minded people on any topic under the sun today.
I am not limited to what I can buy, based on the stores within reach of a short ride in the car.

I am not necessarily regretting our modern technology.

But I know of numerous parents that don't realise, they have to make sure their children play outside, and more than just a bit too.
They have to realise that people exposed to to much negative influence, become dulled to it eventually.
I laugh at people that espouse the pathetic notion their superior intellect and awareness makes them immune to pavlovian influence.

And I have proof too.
My son likes his playstation to be sure. And he likes watching tv to be sure. But I can see he needs to get away from it too.
He is not allowed to play games that simulate violence just for the laughs (he has no fighting/wrestling/hack and slash games for instance).
He is not allowed to watch MTV or similar sex intensive, negative message lyric programing, or films with excessive violence.
He is expected to play outdoors as well as indoors.
He has healthy useful toys such as trucks and lego. He doesn't have fighting oriented toys.

If he wants to entertain those actvities, he will have to wait till he is his own adult.
Until then, he will have to live a life closer to what I lived.

I'm not over 35, but I still recognize myself in most of those. :D

That's true, Cap'n. But in the end - isn't that up to the parents of the kids of today? I know fer shure that my kid/s (whenever they come around  ) will be allowed to do all the crazy things I did as a kid, if not more.

As for the germ fright - aren't kids today even MORE allergic to just about everything due to overcautious parents and über-clean environments? How do you build up a good immune system that way?

I agree with that 100%. Parent just have to realize that they are responsible for setting the limits, and that you can't always be the good guy when it comes to guiding them.

If you went to school with your shirttail out you had to put it in. If your hair touched your ears (guys) you had to get a haircut, if you had hair on your face you had to shave. If you got a whipping at school, you were probably going to get one at home too.
