Is it possible to place units in the Editor and THEN subdivide them?

If not, is it possible to subdivide more than one unit at a time while playing? Say, an entire formation?

Yes. But see 17.3.

One thing paragraph 17.3 does not mention (at least I didn’t see it during my read) is that a unit subdivided in the editor does not have its Proficiency reduced. As an example, when a unit with 80 Proficiency is subdivided in the editor each sub unit will have 80 Proficiency and cannot be further subdivided during the game. As you are aware, when a unit is subdivided in-game each sub unit loses about 1/3 Proficiency.

There is another method to prevent in-game subdivision of the smallest units while retaining Proficiency. This can be achieved using custom graphics and selection of unit size. It’s a way of avoiding the problem Bob described.

Regards
