The British bayonet was the size of the Roman short sword. But the British soldier may have been from Nepal who has his own knife. How many Germans survived a night meeting with them?

Greetings RangerJoe,
British allies, French Moroccan Goumiers, also specialized in knife fighting in North African and Italian campaigns against German forces with great success.

In World War One, the Germans called those the Devils. They called the US Navy's infantry the Devil's Dogs.

The British were superior in terms of tea and fire support, which as we all know are the key determinants of military performance.

The German system of Auftragstaktik, or "Mission command tactics", was initially inherently superior but failed during the war due to the requirement that all orders be expressed as one compound word. With the increasing sophistication of warfare, the words became too long to be trasmitted over the radio or indeed shouted over the battlefield.

Yes. For example, late in the war the Germans may be launching a counterattack in Austria. Perhaps their objective was the headquarters of the Association of Subordinate Officials of the Head Office Management of the Danube Steamboat Electrical Services. Well the German for that is something like, "Erobern Sie das Hauptquartier des Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtenge".

A bit of a mouthful

BTW, Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtenge is (sort of) a real German word. The Association of Subordinate Officials of the Head Office Management of the Danube Steamboat Electrical Service actually existed (before WW1 I think).

Generating these ridiculously long words is a kind of joke amongst German speakers. Mostly they're not really used.
