You are correct, I wasn't able to cut off the entire spearhead because there was a German division that were not visible on the screen shot just North of the security unit. It was visible only after I did air recon in the area but unfortunately I do not have a screen shot to show this as we are now on turn 4.

In the Leningrad area at the start of Soviet Turn 3, the German units follow the retreating Soviet units.

At the end of turn 3, the Soviet units set up defenses behind the swamps and river systems of the Luga and Oredezh, this is where they will make their stand to defend Leningrad.

West of Smolensk having cut off the 3 motorized and 2 panzer units last turn deprived them of fuel, limiting the advance of Army Group Center during turn 3.

At the start of Soviet Turn 3, again having cut off 2 panzer and 1 motorized units last turn slowed the Axis advance in the South.

At the end of Soviet Turn 3. Was able to cut off 4 panzer divisions this turn in the South, no extra fuel for these units next turn. Soviet units continued retreating setting up defenses behind the Ingul river.

At the beginning of Soviet Turn 4, German units are advancing towards the Soviet defenses around Leningrad. The panzer units in the area are probably resupplying planning a future offensive.

At the end of Turn 4 the Soviet defenses west of Moscow. This is where the Soviet army will make its stand in the defense of Moscow. As the German army is presently far from its supply Railhead, the Axis units will need time to collect sufficient supplies and fuel for the next advance towards Moscow or use the HQ unit supply buildup for its panzer corps. The extra one to two turns of quiet will allow the Soviet units time to improve their defensive fortification levels.

The Soviet units that had survived the Lvov pocket have retreated into the mountains next to the Hungarian border. The Red Air Force is attempting to air transport supplies to the isolated units.

This is the situation at the beginning of Soviet Turn 5 in the Leningrad area. There were a few ground combats near the City of Novgorod, but all along the Soviet defensive line the infantry of Army Group North had advanced adjacent to the Soviet units, with the majority of the panzer (about 2 panzer corps) units not visible behind the front lines. Against an experienced Axis player, such as my opponent, this almost always means that one to two HQ buildups were used and a major push towards Leningrad will occur next turn. As the Soviet player I think I have two possible defensive choices - either retreat further setting up a defensive zone closer to Leningrad or defend the Luga and Oredezh river systems.

The decision was to defend the Luga Oredezh river system, no more running away. This is the situation at the end of Turn 5 after setting up a deep defensive pattern using all the best available defensive terrain - such as behind rivers, light wood and swamp hexes, hoping to stop the panzer advance expected next turn well before the gates of Leningrad.

A similar situation near Smolensk, where the infantry of Army Group Center has also advanced. A major push by the Axis towards Moscow is expected east of Smolensk next turn. I think the best defensive option for the Soviet player is a defense in depth (such as was used at the battle of Kursk) versus a solid single defensive line (2 to 3 units per hex) which I feel only results in Soviet units being surrounded. The key is to slowly retreat towards Moscow without losing too many units to panzer encirclements, for which I think a defense in depth is best. The following is the Soviet defensive position at the end of Turn 5.

In the South a defense in depth West of the two cities of Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye, in an attempt to delay the Axis forces just enough to evacuate the factories in the two cities safely to the Urals.

Why do you leave so many Stavka divisions/brigades unassigned to Armies? The combat ability would greatly increase if assigned. (Take a look at how much the CV increases when better CV math is turned on.)

At any rate, you do seem to have a very nice defense in depth.

They are actually all assigned to Soviet Army HQs that are assigned to STAVKA. All my Front HQs are presently at or over capacity, and I think assigning more units to the Front HQs would reduce their effectiveness. In the Center West of Moscow Stavka is within 5 hexes of all the HQs assigned directly to STAVKA.

@Grognard - Yeah, avoiding over capacity of the front HQs is usually a good call. The one thing you can do if you aren't already is assign 1-2 armies to the MDs (Kharkov for example in the south). This gives an extra check just like having them assigned to a front.
