On the road for a week so no manual available. My question is how does the game engine choose pilot replacements for a squadron when I push "get new pilot?" I am NOT selecting veterans myself. So if I have a fighter squadron is there a skill that has priority? And related to that, if I train a pilot in a DB-type plane and choose the skill of Nav Search, can a Patrol get him (through the game engine when I hit get a new pilot?

Many thanks

I have seen pilots go to the wrong aircraft type but that is when the right pilots are not there or they are not experienced enough. It is best to check and see if enough pilots are there for the air unit type. If any are in the wrong category, then you have to manually get them to the right type of air unit.

If you look at the settings on top of the squadron name to the left of the auto replacement button, you will see it is all experience.

I do not know, but merely infer, that experience maybe the first parameter for auto refill.

Secondly, if you look at the setting to the right of the 'get pilot' buttons, you have choices to pick from any of reserve, tracom, etc. You can even set that to nuggets.

If you take from reserve, I recall you get a pilot from the correct reserve for the squadron type (e.g. fighter) - also based on experience.

Those pools names by the way go green, yellow or red depending on pilot availability.

I have already gotten the "wrong" type of pilots, when I had just transferred pilots from one of my on-map training squadrons to the reserve. Could it be because I tried to do it in the same turn ?

1. Not possible to "get" the wrong type of pilots when transferring from unit to an external reserve.

2. When transferring a pilot who is inactive in a unit (ie he is a reserve for that unit) directly to another unit, if the player misclicks then of course you can "get" the wrong pilot.

3. The most common way of getting the "wrong" pilot is when transferring from an external reserve to an air unit. Even though the player may be transferring a pilot from the external "bomber" pilots reserve to a dive bomber unit, the actual pilot chosen may have last been assigned to a torpedo bomber unit. Moving from torpedo to dive bomber aircraft results in an experience drop.

4. The player should pay very close attention to the actual pilot skills as the external reserves aggregate different pilot profiles.

This. I set up various TB, DB, LB groups (and other types too). I know they all get dumped in the "Bomber pilots" Reserve, but I was under the impression (due to the XP drop if changing the type of plane, so the info must be stored somewhere in the game) that, among those, there was a priority given when you used the "Get Pilots" button after setting the pool they're drafted from to "Reserve" (and maybe that it had to do with the best skills of the squadron too).

Is this wrong, and drafting Pilots from the Reserve give a random Bomber pilot (if available) no matter the previous type of planes the pilot flew ?

EDIT: to be clear, I haven't really used that feature in years, after a couple of wrong pilots drafted, and usually draft veterans by hand-picking them... but it gets tedious after a time (especially end-game, with lots of squadrons).

I believe I know what you are talking about.

Your reserve pilot pools are very low to 0 for a certain type of pilot say transport. You go to a squadron that is doing training and release pilots into reserve. Then you go to the front lines, and have a squadron take reserve pilots and you want to get those reserve pilots for transport...but instead of getting the pilots you just put into reserve three mouse clicks ago you get pilots from another section say fighter that does have a very deep pool of pilots.

Correct?

Yes, that too happened, albeit I rarely set up training squadrons for transports.

What happens, typically, is that a squadron with a specific group upgrade path changes planes, eg from a fighter type to a bomber type.

You then send all the trained fighter pilots (good air-air skill etc) to reserve.

Unfortunately the exe will put them in the bomber reserve - because they came from a bomber group (post that upgrade). Which is what it is supposed to do. (Can't prove that, but it makes sense.)

A good way to get around that is to shift them to reserve BEFORE changing to a different class of airframe.

Alternately, you could find a fighter group that needs replacements, and manually get those chaps from the bomber reserve. Or offload a fighter group's pilots into TRACOM amd do a manual refil.

The ones you need to watch (as Allies) are the VMSB squdrons* changing to VMTB, and various Australian and UK aircraft (& FAA) changing aircraft types more often.

I did some tests this weekend (no game currently running, not even against the AI), and part of my problems was indeed like Lowpe said : an empty reserve which I fill with pilots from a squadron in the US, and try to get pilots in a front-line squadron in the same turn.
And to think I abstained of using that feature (and consequently manually selecting the pilots with the get a veteran button, then activating them manually in the squadron set pilots screen) for several years... Well, next game will be easier for that.

Could I just also have a confirmation there are no hidden mechanism favoring some specific types of pilots (like pilots who last flew TB for TB squadrons)

Besides, during my tests I noticed the replacement pilots one got for an Attack Bomber squadron were skilled in GrdB, LowN, LowG, Strafe and Def, and not just GrdB and Def. It’ll cut my training times by one or two months for my attack bomber and fighter pilots.

The default sorting for your general reserve pools is by experience. I am unable to say if the exe will look for pilots with applicable skills, or not. I can say that it is entirely possible to end up with fighter skills pilots in bombers, because they were dropped into the bomber reserve in the circumstances mentioned above.

Use sorting by different skills, "Request veteran" and "Release pilot/5 pilots /10 pilots" for transferring pilots between airgroups and "Reserve" pool. You are not able to pick a particular individual pilot this way, but on the upside there is no arrival delay and no experience drop. Indispensable for massive and efficient training programs that I usually run. Versatile enough so I never use other means of pilot transfer, only pull new rookies out of school now and then
