   | Some of you may be curious as to why a couple of threads were locked in the past few days.
Locking a thread is a decision that is dispassionate and not taken lightly. Informed and civil discourse is not only desired, it is required for a civilized society.

 Now for the inevitable "however":

However, when a thread moves from debating the relative pros and cons of the effect(s) of database tweaks on the game engine into the realm of advocating a change in the game code that is NOT HAPPENING ANYTIME SOON, arguments break out that are at least 10 years old at this point.

This is a game, not a straight-ahead simulation. Abstractions, imbalanced mechanics, and straight-up "AI cheats" were programmed in to make the game playable. To have made a simulation would have made it nearly un-playable, and in some cases, delayed delivery for up to 18 months (or more). The game engine itself is nearly 20 years old. And yes, there are still some things that don't work as we think they could/should/would (sonar/radar). And other things that were left deceptively unfinished (ASW TF reaction).

The bottom line is this: if you want to experiment with database changes to achieve your desired effect within the existing game engine, then go for it! Ask advice/comments/suggestions and we'll all contribute what we can (some of us are still under NDA) to help you better understand how to get as close as possible to what you want.

If all you're going to do is bitch and whine about things we can't change, then please understand that the tolerance for that is very short.
