Turn 48:

Interesting weather results this turn. The north and south are clear, but the central zone is mud. First we attacked our 3 unit stack of Russian units – capturing 22 thousand men. I forgot how good it could feel to pocket and destroy clumps of Russian soldiers.

We also launched attacks towards Moscow (gaining 20 miles), but decided not to engage our panzers until the risk of mud has subsided. In the Lake Ilmen area near Novgorod, we penetrated thee Russians’ lines and made good progress. In the South we moved our armies up against the Russians near Rostov. However, we retreated our panzers to prepare for their strike towards Voronezh. The attached pictures outline our battle planes for the coming weeks.

Casualty report:
End of Turn #48: 4 units destroyed for a total of 530 units destroyed.
German Losses to date: 1.245 million men (20k last turn), 3307 AFV (31 last turn), 1561 aircraft (114 last turn)
Russian Losses to date: 5.545 million men (83k last turn), 21896 AFV (62 last turn), 11681 aircraft (174 last turn)

OOB Update:

Germany – 3.81 million soldiers, 35.3k guns, 6052 tanks, 4087 aircraft
Russia – 5.37 million soldiers, 77.1k guns, 5615 tanks, 9248 aircraft

Turn 50:

Weather is all clear across the front. It’s time for war!

AGS took the lead and dented the Russian front east of Kharkov, and then we plunged our fully rested panzers into the gap, pushing a 100 mile hole in the front, and pocketing 6 divisions. The Russians never knew what hit them. This is a very auspicious beginning to our spring 1942 offensive. We also made modest progress in the Moscow sector, pushing the Russians back a hex with our infantry, but we declined to engage our panzers given the likelihood of mud next turn. We want to keep them fresh.

AGN launched a targeted attack across the Volkhov, successfully getting control of two hexes with our armored units. Hopefully we will be able to exploit this beachhead and take the last Lagoda port in the coming turns. Overall, 9000 Axis soldiers perished compared to almost 29000 Russians during our attacks.

During the Russian turn, they launched a handful of attacks on weaker units where they could direct significant firepower (i.e. attack from 3 hexes), winning a couple (3), but losing 6. Overall, no damage as we lost 1100 men compared to 5300 for them.

Casualty report:
End of Turn #50: 5 units destroyed for a total of 535 units destroyed.
German Losses to date: 1.282 million men (23k last turn), 3426 AFV (113 last turn), 1610 aircraft (49 last turn)
Russian Losses to date: 5.676 million men (86k last turn), 22053 AFV (124 last turn), 11989 aircraft (238 last turn)

OOB Update:

Germany – 3.88 million soldiers, 36.0k guns, 5849 tanks, 4103 aircraft
Russia – 5.50 million soldiers, 78.1k guns, 5554 tanks, 9369 aircraft

Turn 51:
Clear in the south and north, but mud in the central again. So strange.

AGN continued its assault over the Volkhov, capturing another two hexes from the Russians, but more importantly, getting three infantry divisions and 6 mobile divisions over the Volkhov. We hope this will allow us to break out and capture that last port in the next couple turns. Most of the rest of AGC was locked in mud so they rested.

AGC redeployed its panzers north of Moscow last turn and struck the Russian front north of Kalinin. We encircled 4 Russian divisions and sent a bunch routing. We will clean up the pocket next turn and based on the Russian response, determine which axis to strike further on. The attached picture shows our victory.

AGS was disappointed to see the Russians be able to open up a one hex path out of the encirclement; however, we swung our panzers around to nearly encircle those troops again, while sending our infantry into the breach caused by the Russian withdrawal. We’ve already recovered almost all of the territory we lost in the winter in the Voroshilovgrad area. We probably could have made more progress (and completed the encirclement), but the mud in the area is slowing us down.

Overall, modest fighting on the German turn – 3800 casualties compared to 13k for the Russians, but we are focusing our resources on AGN at the moment, sending reinforcements to the front to allow us to push our advantage (6 more infantry divisions and an armored division. We need to seize that last port and starve Leningrad out.

Casualty report:
End of Turn #51: 1 units destroyed for a total of 536 units destroyed.
German Losses to date: 1.303 million men (21k last turn), 3526 AFV (100 last turn), 1622 aircraft (12 last turn)
Russian Losses to date: 5.741 million men (75k last turn), 22182 AFV (129 last turn), 12095 aircraft (106 last turn)

OOB Update:

Germany – 3.88 million soldiers, 35.9k guns, 5696 tanks, 4096 aircraft
Russia – 5.52 million soldiers, 78.1k guns, 5520 tanks, 9375 aircraft

Turn 52:

MUD everywhere (except the south) – so not much happened, although my panzer attacks in the south have caused a full scale retreat by the Russians, so we’ll be able to take advantage of this in the mud turn to advance our lines 40-50 miles. Around Rostov, we were able to seize a few more hexes from the Russians as we slowly increase our pressure here.

And what did the Russians do? They retreated to improve their defensive positions. I now have recovered nearly all of my losses in the winter - partly due to our panzer attack, but also because the Russians have pulled back to shorten their lines.

Casualty report:
End of Turn #52: 0 units destroyed for a total of 536 units destroyed.
German Losses to date: 1.318 million men (15k last turn), 3580 AFV (54 last turn), 1623 aircraft (1 last turn)
Russian Losses to date: 5.789 million men (48k last turn), 22215 AFV (33 last turn), 12168 aircraft (73 last turn)

OOB Update:

Germany – 3.91 million soldiers, 36.1k guns, 5926 tanks, 4212 aircraft
Russia – 5.47 million soldiers, 72.5k guns, 5633 tanks, 9486 aircraft

Turn 53: Clear across the board. This is it boys.

First AGC cleared up its pocket netting 41k Russians at the cost of 400 Germans. Woo-hoo! It’s like 1941 all over again. AGS picked up another 10k of prisoners (100 Germans lost).

AGN attacked first, using our beachhead to break through the Russian lines and seize the last resupply port on the Lagoda. Leningrad, here we come. Additionally, this allowed us to liberate three Finnish divisions that were blocked by Russian forts. These troops will help us extend our lines in the battles to come.

AGC then decided to swing north with the intention of meeting up with AGN and destroying the Russians in the north. Two panzer armies swept north, clearing more than 100 miles, and pocketing 11 Russian units. If our plan goes well, we should be able to meet up with AGN next turn and possibly pocketing some 40 units. This might be ambitious – but at worst will cause a significant Russian retreat along the entire front and at best cause the capitulation of perhaps a million men. Along the Moscow front and south, we basically just held our ground, attacking where we could force a Russian retreat and capture a hex or two, but with three panzer armies now deployed in the north, the progress our infantry will be able to make against the dug in Russian soldiers will be limited.

AGS encircled five more units and continued to push the front back, as we are now 40 miles from Boguchar. The 6th Army continued to attack relentlessly, pushing the Russians back towards the Don and Voronezh, although we are still 60-70 miles or so from the city.

Overall, on our turn we lost 7600 men and took out almost 67k men. We’re looking forward to next turn and the mass prisoners we should be able to get from our pockets.

The Russians launched a few minor counterattacks, and clearly spent rail capacity to start putting a line together east of the Volkhov pocket.

Casualty report:
End of Turn #53: 7 units destroyed for a total of 543 units destroyed.
German Losses to date: 1.343 million men (25k last turn), 3694 AFV (114 last turn), 1707 aircraft (84 last turn)
Russian Losses to date: 5.912 million men (123k last turn), 22312 AFV (97 last turn), 12318 aircraft (150 last turn)

OOB Update:

Germany – 3.89 million soldiers, 35.7k guns, 5702 tanks, 4143 aircraft
Russia – 5.60 million soldiers, 73.3k guns, 5480 tanks, 9392 aircraft

Turn 54:

AGC and AGN consolidated its pocket around Vyshny Volochek, netting 121 thousand prisoners and then completed its encirclement of the Russians in the north – 52 divisions are now encircled and pocketed. I literally am so excited. It may take us a couple turns to completely destroy this army, but between this and the upcoming fall of Leningrad, it may set us up for the defeat of Russia. The attached picture shows the pocket before my moves, with the 121k prisoners in the VV pocket, and the plans to sever to the Northern Russian Armies from its body. The loss of likely half a million of front-line Russian troops will be devastating - absolutely devastating. I honestly believe that this was the battle won the war for me. The fighting may continue for some time, but the Russians will either have to leave the North undefended, which will allow me to sweep east and just demolish Russian Army after Russian Army or pillage other sectors to rebuild some semblance of a fighting force ini the north. Either way, I don't know if they recover from this.

AGS – another 35k surrendered troops – and we continue to push the front east. Our main goal here is to simply keep the Russians weak. We don’t really have the strength in the south after a tough winter to be too aggressive. We are hoping that our gains in the north will propel us to victory.

Casualty report:
End of Turn #54: 16 units destroyed for a total of 559 units destroyed.
German Losses to date: 1.367 million men (24k last turn), 3785 AFV (91 last turn), 1723 aircraft (16 last turn)
Russian Losses to date: 6.139 million men (227k last turn), 22513 AFV (201 last turn), 12471 aircraft (153 last turn)

OOB Update:

Germany – 3.90 million soldiers, 35.7k guns, 5693 tanks, 4083 aircraft
Russia – 5.50 million soldiers, 72.2k guns, 5142 tanks, 9456 aircraft

Attacked is the picture

Here's turn 54 in the south (prior to my moves) - definitely making slow progress on pushing the Russians back.

Congratulations on getting this far. Normally against another human opponent I would say it is stretching it to be advancing on every front and you night be better of digging in on some. But you may be able to throw that caution to the wind. It is 16 or so turns of clear weather to go and you can probably decimate a larget part of the soviet forces in that time given their dispositions.
