This locked thread https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4873833 and the release of Battlefront titles by Slitherine/Matrix publishing present some interesting questions. Some of Battlefront's games are at the forefront of todays political current events. Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine specifically. If a thread is going to be locked out of hand because it 'may become political' then you might as well not have any sub forums for any of these games because they all 'may become political'.

I was thinking TOAW might be able to model something but after reading Battlefront's blurb about other of their games coming to Slitherine/Matrix it is evident Black Sea would make an even better platform for the aforementioned what if situation.

Another thing just came to mind. Instead of locking threads that are not political to begin with why don't you just muzzle the people who post political statements in a thread instead of punishing a community for the actions of axe grinders. We are going to be walking on eggshells if SF2 gets a forum.

Because it's fair to also punish those who encourage others to make political posts in threads.

Please note that the CMSF backstory was originally developed prior to its release in 2007. With CMSF2, nothing about this purely fictional hypothetical scenario set in 2008 has changed whatsoever other than some updates to the Syrian TO&E made possible through the additional news coverage arising from the subsequent Syrian Civil War and the better picture available of actual 2008 NATO TO&E in hindsight (plus new features like on-map mortars).

Regarding CM: Black Sea, this again started development prior to actual events in 2014. The hypothetical scenario background only came into coincidence with reality subsequently. It is not meant to portray the actual state of the hybrid war in the Donbas as of today, but a hypothetical 2018 conventional war / full-scale Russian invasion with NATO intervention.

Actually the long Coronavirus thread on the WitP: AE page proved that this board can self-regulate itself quite well when potentially political subjects are debated (and I maintain my opinion that talking about the virus without being political is inherently very hard).

That went on until some posters who never were significantly part of the debate "got worried" and had the thread closed. Way to go

From what I recall, some posts entered deep in the political territory (and I was responsible for some of those, cough). But, as I said, the thread as a whole was pretty good at self regulating. True, there were concerns - and from those very concerns came the needed warnings. Until someone who hadn't a clue about these inner dynamics called the forum's own 911, thus piping a dirge on one of the best debates around.

Samuel Johnson once said that doing nothing is a feat that anyone can manage. I guess he was wrong.

Well, I don't like someone telling me how I should live and what I should do when they do not know the situation other than that virus was not near me.

Then just ignore him/her. Being part of a debate is like being part of something bigger. Is the debate worthwhile? If so, the best solution is always to find a way for it to go on and develop within the agreed boundaries. There will always be those who try to pee into the soup. Amen to that.

In a way, I don't like someone telling me that something as informative and as focused as the Coronavirus debate on the WitP: AE board should be closed when they don't know how it managed to be one of the longest threads ever in the history of these fora. This is true for any other sort of debate.

I recall you being stuck in Milan after your business (cafe?) was made to close? Hopefully everything has turned out ok for you.
