I didn't do well at all vs Computer Player Poland. Not even the Computer Soviets could help me.

Any tips on how to win this scenario? Thanks.

Hi, I haven't played this one, but it looks like a fun scene.

I looked at "inventory and replacements" and it looks to me like,
Germans need to punch through quick w/ the PzKpfw IIB shooter wagons (see below pic)

I had pretty good combat results w/ them on a test turn 1,
combine arms with those guys leading the charge to punch the lines open.

You can find all the German tank units easy by go to Order of Battle (press "O" key)
then click on "Icon Type" label to sort by type; scroll down the list to Tanks,
then you can click on the Unit label to go to each unit (press 5 on the keypad to center on unit after clicking the label for it)...
then I get that tank unit leading charge, surround / support the tanker w/ nearby / formation help,
it will punch through, and try to get as many rounds of combat, too ....

I got at least five rounds of combat in my test of turn 1 Germans,
I could have gotten more but I just did a "quick dirty" test run.

Looks like a good scene, but also very intense / many units / seems difficult!
I hope this helps, Good Luck!!

Thanks!

Should I put my attacking force on Limit Losses or the highest loss tolerance level?

Also, I noticed that, once I surrounded some Polish Army units to make pockets, the pockets resisted for numerous turns and were not easy to eliminate. Maybe I should leave them surrounded for a few turns before attacking them?

Also, is it true that my Artillery won't fire in Defensive Fire unless it is not in "movement mode"? I remember reading in the manual somewhere about this.

Well, putting them on "Ignore Losses" will burn more of your rounds faster,
I kind of like a "graduated" approach...limit losses until final combat round, maybe?

As far as surrounding, I like blitzkrieging, pushing past enemies and let infantry / security hem up and eventually destroy stragglers. Or let them starve :)

Yes, as I recall, artillery will not support w/ defensive fire unless it is in tactical reserve, or dug in / entrenched / fortified mode. Artillery in mobile deployment mode does not provide long range defense support (see deployment modes at 8.2.8 unit deployment modes) also must pass communication check to support .... also see 13.11 long range supporting fire section

Also, messing around in turn 1,
I see Luftwaffe has some pretty strong units
can be used well with the Panzer tanks attack

Be sure to add planes to your attacke plans,
easy to see some in planner thing

PS not sure why that one tanker chit is yellow ... is in a German formation

I'm not sure why that unit is colored Yellow.

I should probably use my Air Power manually instead of allowing the PO to handle it, or, at lease I can use it to support some key attacks then switch the PO back on for the Air Power.

This is my fault (as I designed the scenario...)

I messed around with the unit colours so as to be able to use withdraw army events, then I masked the appearance of all these units with custom graphics. Then in TOAW IV all historic custom graphics were wiped out and I never updated the scenario to address this problem. Trust me they are Germans and apart from making your eyes bleed the colour should have no effect on the scenario!!

Anyway, the key for the Germans here is movement; the Polish army is very inflexible and so if the German player can create holes and push the panzer units forward then there is very little the Poles can do. As suggested elsewhere it is best to let pockets "wither on the vine" for a couple of turns and only liquidate them when it's convenient, using second line infantry.

Unless TOAW IV has broken the scenario even more than I thought, all German tanks should have a "recon" rating which means they can slip through small gaps in the Polish lines very easily. OKW has actually made this a slam dunk for the German player as the starting locations of most panzer units are just where they should be, at the weakpoints in the Polish lines. However it's worth noting that the original German plan called for several of the mechanised divisions in 4. Armee to be transferred through the Danzig Corridor, via East Prussia to cut through Eastern Poland, to ensure that a) the Poles were not able to regroup in this area and b) the Soviets were not able to advance beyond their agreed upon treaty lines.

Huh. I had a look at the scenario and actually I don't think this unit was ever meant to be a different icon colour, it just got changed by mistake at some point but in III the colour change wasn't visible and so I missed it when I converted the scenario for IV.
