Well, it is the Sinko Maru and it is probably trying to live up to the name.

INVADED

INVESTED
Taung Gyi
Port Moresby

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• No carrier info.

• I am mulling over the idea of making Iwo Jima the next target after Pagan. Opinions?

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• CVE Anzio is entering the shipyard at Mare Island with an estimate of 16 days to repair.

• The convoy with support units for Pagan has loaded and will leave Pearl Harbor for a holding area. Indiana will be repaired in 3 days and Hornet in 7 days. Tomorrow damaged Tennessee will arrive at Pearl.

Pacific

• Busy waters.

• We got a chance DL of 1/2 on Pagan which shows 4 units present, also SignInt that the 15th Garrison Unit is located there. Looking again at SigInt for Pagan I must have screwed up my query previously. We have:
quote:

12th Tank Regiment
15th Garrison Unit
15th Ind.Art.Mortar Battalion
39th Field AA Machinecannon Company
5th RF Gun Battalion
82nd Naval Guard Unit
9th JNAF AF Unit

So it will be a fight, but I think we have adequate assault forces, especially with so little infantry. Reiterating from an earlier post:
ARM
- 640th TD Bn
ART
- 168th FA Bn
- 181st FA Bn
- 97th FA Bn
- 145th FA Bn
- 226th FA Bn
- 82nd Mortar Bn
- 7th USMC FA Bn
ENG
- 2nd Amphib Trac Bn
HQ
- Sixth US Army
INF
- 19th Inf Rgt
- 33rd Ind Div
- 1st (Spec) Cav Div
- 58th (Sep) Inf Rgt

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• Ground assault supported tomorrow by naval bombardments and the daily aerial bombardments.

• Tomorrow all transport will be in place for hte Rabaul invasion to load up at Townsville.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• Got one!

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• No carrier info.

• Moving troops around in anticipation of Iwo Jima being the next target after Pagan. The USA 148th Inf Rgt will move from Tarawa to Pearl Harbor to rebuild the 37th Infantry Division prior to loading.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• Indiana will be ready at Pearl harbor tomorrow, as will Hornet in 5 days. Mississippi, freshly repaired on the West Coast, will arrive at Pearl Harbor tomorrow.

• Idaho, 25 hexes from Bremerton and moving about 2 or 3 hexes per day, has damage 4-72(71)-0-0. She is in company of 3x DE and 4x DD (was 5x DD). In 2 days the remaining destroyers will leave her to join up with a CVE heading for Hawaii and points beyond.

Pacific

• The refueling at sea station is 33 hexes from Pagan and some TF's are still en route, so the invasion is more than a week away.

• As naval forces will be busy with Iwo Jima after Pagan is captured, Pagan will be mined to aid in protection from IJN forces raiding from the southern Mariana Islands. A batch of AKE are being assigned to Pagan to allow sustained combat operations by at least some forces once the base is captured.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• One more day to go.

• Pagan Recon: DL 9/11; 8 units; 13,300 troops; 110 guns; 102 AFV. The invasion fleet, including most of the forces which remained near Marcus, will move to a point 9 hexes east of Pagan. Only 13 hexes from Saipan, the fleet is sure to be well spotted tomorrow. Today there is a DL 1/1 on a single amphibious TF, surely not enough to identify it.

• The invasion fleet is poorly spotted, but spotted just the same. The invasion fleet is moving to a spot 6 hexes from Pagan and 7 hexes from Saipan, fully 3 hex rows south of the fleet's current hex row, the idea being to lend some uncertainty about the target. Pagan Recon: DL 9/11; 8 units; 12,600 troops; 99 guns; 94 AFV. Saipan has 33F, 11B, 42A; Tinian 0F, 0B, 16A; Guam 49F, 0B, 2A. I don't see a major LBA threat unless more squadrons transfer in. Where are the carriers?

CHANGED OWNERSHIP

Overall

• No info on carriers.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• BB Idaho has 9 hexes or 5 days to go to Bremerton with her damage at 6-79(71)-0-0. BB Tennessee is entering the shipyard at Mare Island with 53 days estimated to make repairs. The 4x CVE spread around the Bay Area will all be repaired in about 2 weeks.

Pacific

• Today we shot down 11x C5M2 Babs, 2x G3M2 Nell, 2x E13A1 Jake, and 1x Ki-46-III Dinah. Most were reported destroyed over the Pagan invasion fleet, all or most of the rest I presume were there too.

• Tomorrow the invasion fleet will move to the hex just east of Pagan. No substantive changes in defenses in the Marianas noted. Every day there are several single-sub TF's at Truk, and while there still are today there is also a TF of 8 ships scouted as moving east, I presume those to be submarines sortying in response to the Pagan invasion force.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• Rabaul invasion force still on the move.

• All troops are ashore! Maximum Fatigue is 8, maximum disruption is 4, so the first assault is tomorrow and we will see how well fortified Pagan is. Tonight there will be a bombardment by 3 battleships and tomorrow a DB squadron and a TB squadron will bombard from the air. Recon with DL 10/11 and shows 8 units; 13,120 troops; 92 guns; 92 AFV. Hopefully we brought enough artillery to suppress the defenders.

• One APA struck a mine (modest damage) and will not be available for the next operation, otherwise only a DE (which also struck a mine) shows serious damage.

• In addition to an ACM and 4x SSX, the previously heavily damaged DD Hibiki is reported sunk near Guam even though torpedoes missed her. A single ship TF is 1 hex NW of Guam in heavy rain, and I think that is Hibiki trying to get away. If our subs don't get her I might send destroyers to finish her.

• Barnes has serious engine damage but is still operating aircraft. Lamson is badly damaged but on the way to wake; Monssen is damaged worse but still with the transports but I'm ordering her to Marcus. The first BB bombardment TF has reloaded at Marcus.

• The troops are in great shape with maximum Disruption of 12 and maximum fatigue of 19, combat engineers took light casualties. The minimum supply any unit has is 2,936 which I am sure contributes to their good state. We will assault again tomorrow to take advantage of any elevation in the defenders' Disruption.

• The staff forgot to set one convoy for Rabaul to Remain on Station, so they are halfway back to Australia and must turn around. It looks like those 7 subs from Truk are at Rabaul now, whether mine laying or delivering supply I don't know. Intercepted Imperial newspapers mentioned Port Moresby would have held out longer with more supply.

• The LRCAP battle was interesting, and there are more fighters now than before at Saipan, 60 (even after losses) compared with 40-something before. Since the troops need to rest, the DB and TB squadrons assigned to ground strike are standing down, and the Corsair squadron on Bunker Hill will sweep Pagan tomorrow.

• No mine hits today. All the mine cripples are getting away safely, except CVE Barnes which is still on station operating aircraft. The transports have unloaded all supplies and will head to Wake Island. The first (of the 3) OBB bombardment TF's will be back on station in a day plus.

• The ground forces will rest for at least two days. Supply level is fantastic so recovery should be strong. The artillery units are in fine shape and will continue bombarding. I'll see how ground unit recovery goes, but I might wait until all 3 bombardment groups are available before the next bombardment.

Good job.

Almost nothing worse than having the Allies solidly in the Marianas in Jan of 44. I wonder how hard will Japan fight back?

Thanks. I was hoping for a better combat result this turn, but given the solid position of the troops I figure just a bad die roll.

I don't know what he will do, but I'm guessing the LRCAP is meant to attrite carrier fighters to aid any later carrier response on his part.

I want to settle Pagan quickly and get the Iwo-Jima assault in before any sizable build up there.

I looked at the proportion of combat troops destroyed/disabled in your first attack and you had a definite advantage. It looks like the proportionate AV losses this turn were about even. You should win a grinding battle if you can rest some units while keeping pressure on his troops.

I agree, I'm just hoping to speed the process a bit. No fort reduction will stretch things out a bit, so next assault I'm going to use two bombardment TF's the first day and the other one for the second day assault.

Too bad Quiberon couldn't finish off that sub. You should have used the other DD if you wanted Quality hits.

Overall

• No carrier info. There are just a few high DL's on subs south of Japan, but I can't tell if that's just good weather allowing great search out of the Yokohama area or carriers at sea holding along the coast.

• We lost 2 subs today, one near Japan and one in the Sumatra-Malaya-Borneo triangle.

Does anybody know for certain if LCU's continue accumulating preparation while loaded onboard amphibious ships? I have one unit for Iwo-Jima at 75% preparation and another at 80% preparation.

Overall

• No carrier info.

• A reduction is sealift for the upcoming operation - perfect!

• We are upgrading to '44 squads among the USA units tasked for Iwo-Jima and the last of them should be done by the time the units begin loading. There is 1 USMC unit in the Iwo-Jim assault force and we need about 4or 5 more days to accumulate enough squads for that Rgt to upgrade, since they are at Mussau Island they should be able to upgrade and load before units begin loading at Pearl Harbor. We have a total of 825 AV allocated to Iwo-Jima. The transports should be back at Pearl Harbor in about a week to load most of the Iwo-Jima troops. Adding in transit time to Iwo-Jima, a little marshaling time, I think the Iwo-Jima invasion will take place during or near the end of the first week in February. Our assault force for Iwo-Jima is a bit light, but the defense is a bit light right now. I'm hoping my carriers at Pagan are deterring any troop convoys from making for Iwo-Jima, and as soon as possible I will move some carriers even closer to Iwo-Jima.

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

• LST are loading supply at Pearl Harbor to support the Iwo-Jima invasion. A convoy of AK is heading toward Marcus Island with supply, also to support the Iwo-Jima invasion.

Pacific

• Supplies unloading.

If they do gain preparation it is at a horrendously low rate approaching 0.
