This is T6 we have Minsk. Things are slow in the North and I`m over extended there .
Slow slog in the south, need the Panzer Groups more South.
In AGC, where most of the Pz Divs are, moving well.

Army Group South. Slow slog and as everywhere the Red AI is counter attacking pretty well

So there we have it. Stock D 21 to T 6 by a less then good Axis player. I will stop here, so I can do another start, but would say that IMHO you need to attach another Infantry Corps to AGN to get to Leningrad in `41. The default AGN just does not have the horsepower to punch through to Leningrad IMO.
Also, it may be a balance issue but another rail repair unit or 2 is needful in the North.
Also one needs to micromanage the air units.
Using the Pz units to encircle all the frontier Red Army if possible, or the AI will pull them back, especially in the South, and that will become a problem.
Use your Allies in the South as soon as released, if only to stop the AI from moving units North.
And, there's an awful lot of Red Tank Corps on the Map...

This game looks really good. I'm sure this has been written about elsewhere, but how does it differ from FITE?

Sorry, but have not played FITE since TOAOW III many years ago so I wouldn`t give a good comparison for you using IV.
I do think the stock D 21 is a long haul for the Axis before the snows, due to the high number of Red units on the map. Hellen_S did a good, long AAR vs AI in his The Russo-German War" below.

Hopefully Larry or Hellen_s or one of the regulars here will be along soon to help.
Rich

FitE (whether #1 ver.5, or FitE2 ver. 1.8) is PBEM only, more complex in that you have more units, more events, more map, and I think FitE leans a bit more toward a tactical feel than D21. D21 just feels a bit more strategic.

FitE is PBEM or solitaire only, there is not a programmed opponent, so you have to either play it solitaire or against a dedicated opponent.

I have played D21 two or three times. First time my computer failed around turn 60 (hard drive fail, no backup). Second time I think it went to around 260? when I resigned against the computer. In D21 the rail repair is automatic but still almost a game unto itself. In FitE, you have more detailed control of RR repair .... and it is even more of a game unto itself.

D21 (and the Russo-German War scene) I think are pretty good introductory scenes to the monster of FitE. D21 programmed opponents are serviceable, and on +2 Intelligence etc. settings, give a very stiff fight (at least to me, an only average player ... .) Also, d21 / RGW lend themselves to more replay value, easier to restart if you want, where as FitE you will spend much more time and the FitE require a bit more time sink. FitE #1 is easier than FitE2( I am playing both, my FitE 1 game has reached turn 160 I think, about 1/3 way to end. After almost one year of play.

FitE2 game we are still on turn 19 after about 3 months of play. D21, I can play a game against computer in about 9 months or a bit less .... FitE takes years to complete a game.

I hope this helps! I would definitely think that start with D21 playing Germans, give Russo-German War a try also playing as Russians, and with the experience at those against computer , you will have a good idea of what is involved with FitE (and I would start with FitE1, then if comfortable with that, FitE2 ..... while it is possible to play FitE solo, it really takes a LOT of free time to do it justice. I am retired, and TOAW is the only game I play, so I put a lot of time into it. It is my major hobby, well, anyway, have a great day! PS: Also, remember there is also a D41 scene, which looks very interesting. I am just now starting that one to see how it plays. okay, i have to move more FitE tonight. Have a great night!

That's great. Thanks heaps for that.

I played a lot of FITE1 back in the day - it was really my dream scenario and I loved every moment. I tried FITE2 in its very early days too I think, but found it very hard to make historical progress as the Germans, so concluded that it needed a lot of balancing. It may well have progressed a long way since then of course.

Yes, FitE 1 is becoming my favorite to play. I did not get to play it in COW or TOAWIII, sometimes I wonder if it could be better "optimized" for TOAWIV.

Of the computer opponent ones, I like Russo-German War. I want to try D41, but just don't have time for it right now. Too many scenes, too little time! Also I still need to install my TOAWIII, I want to try that too ... just not time for it! I used to have several boxed "originals" -- The Next War, CfNA, and Wacht am Rhein that I recall having back in 1980 or so -- but never really got to play them so I really like, have this TOAW versions of those. Okay, well, have a great day! Happy Wargaming!
