Well, you have almost crippled the allied amphib assault permanently. A lot of those AKA/APA are irreplaceable.

BANZAI!

You are doing very good.

Can you rearm DDs close to the action at Calcutta from a port? Maybe fly in some Naval Support? They may not get torpedoes, but at least the guns would be rearmed.

If the CVs need rearming, do you have enough air support at nearby bases to send the carrier air to them if you want to? You might be able to set the ranges then so they won't find so many enemy fighters.

Are you sweeping Diamond Harbor or better yet, Calcutta? That and LRCAP at Diamond Harbor should increase his losses.

I hope that you have some ADs coming and not just the AKEs.

With the AKEs everything up there can rearm, from BBs to DDs and the CVs. Not going to fly off any aircraft from my carriers, there are nearly 1000 land based aircraft in the area and they hardly fly. Lots of bases, including lvl 9 ones, hardly any damaged aircraft, perfect morale.

Engaging the enemy CAP, even with sweeps, is a death sentence for my fighters, no matter their experience. The enemy fighters are sent up so high they get so many dives on my fighters that they totally shred them (10:0 and better) during the dive. Of course I learnt the dive is totally useless and just a silly, non meaning message during the combat replay. And still, the enemy does 10:0 kills with the dive and only 1:1 without it. Go figure, the world is playing a differnt game or just ignores the combat replays like many have done for over a decade.

Absolute carnage, well done.
That’s an impressive defensive bonus you got at Calcutta!

Yeah, was surprised too it was that high. Urban hex, max forts, all units 100% prepped and Southern Area Army 100% prepped for it too. Even more important than the adjusted av is the damage we do to the enemy though.

Agree, losing all that assault shipping is a severe loss even though he will have ample xAP. He will just need to use twice the number of them to do a propper landing.

or more .. APA/AKA's off load so fast ... xAP's are sitting ducks with their offload speed ... and a lot of his xAP's are big, which is worse ... he'll be having a lot of empty space on his ships if he wants to off load in 2 phases ... that means a LOT more targets

there were no air attacks on Allied shipping at all today as we have moved KB further South to avoid CAP at Diamond Harbour while all convoys that were able to make it back to DH were running there as fast as possible... as a result we have lost no less than 28 aircraft on nav search over Diamond Harbour which is where I start bitching about the silly overflows in the game again... lost 80% of the nav search in the area, would there have been twice the aircraft on nav search I would have lost twice as many...

Thought we've avoided disaster when Snook missed our carrier but right the next moment we see a heavy cruiser group run into a USN/RN/RAN combat group that SURPRISES our task force... and again it's my fault to have a combat group that hasn't included any ships that carry a surface radar which is the big advantage for the Allied here... 0% moonlight and the battle starts with CL Kitakami shot to pieces by 14 inch shells, later sunk by DD torpedoes... while our cruisers also land some shells, non of the hits on the BBs did any notable damage... that's an Allied victory...

now look at this! The enemy throws 1st Marine Div onto Tabiteuea, dot base six hexes South of Tarawa... thought Mundy would do an invasion of the Gilberts but he's most likely doing what I usually do in the area, take that base, build it up and use it to surpress Tarawa, Makin and Mili... no idea why he suffered so many disablements, most likely the div wasn't prepped... we have some 200 bombers plus the same number of escorts on Tarawa and Makin, will be interesting what will happen during the day if that convoy is still there...

oh come on! This cruiser group was surprised during the night due to Allied radar and 0% moonlight and now meets that same BB group again during the day and is AGAIN SURPRISED? Visibility 28,000 yards, Allied radar makes contact and 24,000 yards and our ships are surprised sitting ducks... heavy cruiser Kumano is dead before our ships even open fire on the enemy and the whole engagement is totally one sided seeing the Allied achieving total victory, not losing a single ship while CA Kumano and DD Asagumo sink right after... add in Kitakami during the night engagement we lose 1CA, 1CL and 1DD with several other ships in various stages of damage for no Allied ship sunk or even in danger of sinking... so much about the better night fighting ability of my Navy, this turn really didn't show that... I'm sure radar would have made a difference but being surprised during the night AND during the day is nothing but bad luck... I hate losing heavy cruisers, with two being sunk in the Marshalls we lose a third one in the Bay of Bengal now...

with CV Junyo luckily avoiding being hit by a sub, the disaster of my cruiser squadron losing two cruisers and a destroyer I already considered this turn a bad one... then it was time to wait for our LBA to launch against the invasion at Tabitauea... and to my total surprise we even see the strikes from Tarawa and Makin combining into one bigger strike that engages the enemy's invasion fleet that is only covered by ONE Allied CVE!! Wow, that's quite some confidence, sending an invasvion fleet with such a cover into range of two IJ airfields that were known to be able to send rather large strikes as we already did so during the attempt to invade the Marshalls... we've sent in the bombers at 15,000ft and the enemy CAP was set to 10,000 and wasn't able to make enough height so our escorts were bouncing the Hellcats... result was 17:0 (with the 18th Hellcat being damaged) and all happened during dive, kill, dive, kill, dive, kill, dive, kill... not important, every other factor counts so much more... fixed... 17:0...

the bombers then unloaded in very bad weather with the Judies still scoring some hits, while the torpedo bombers really had a hard time... halve of them attacking from ahead or astern accounting for the usual 100% misses the rest only scored three hits, at least one of those was on the CVE... and that was when I thought it could have come way worse for the Allied but weather was on their side...

this turn really is like black and white for us... while we had bad luck when our cruisers were surprised twice we seem to have luck when it comes down to our LBA launching as the bombers in the Gilberts were attacking in good numbers during the moring and also now int he afternoon... weather isn't perfect but it's better than the Thunderstorms in the morning and lots of enemy shipping is wrecked... Tabitauea is Allied again but there surely isn't all that much supply on that small spot now...

now that one was surprising... the California task force that has shot up one of my cruiser groups was returning to Diamond Harbour and I guess Mundy thought the task force would disband before any airattacks happen... weather was overcast when the first 29 torpedo bombers showed up with halve attacking from ahead or astern again (really disappointing)... the rest missed...

another wave of 1E torpedo bombers shows up and puts four torps into California, the ship not even showing up as heavily damaged... guess an old USN BB shouldn't survive four torps but I'd really liked to see more attacks... the naval bombardment of last turn made sure there was no CAP up today...

we only get ambarrassing strikes in the Calcutta area where we have a level 9 airfield plus level 6 and 7 fields to support but we do get pretty much all bombers airborne in the Gilberts, where we only have level 5 airfields and not even 1/3 of the needed av support... hopefully someone suggest me to read the air coordination guide of my formerly best friend... Tarawa's and Makin's airstrikes combined again, just like yesterday, attacking the remaining and now fleeing ships... in the end there's not much left other than a couple of destroyers... the enemy took the dot base, but at what cost?

really pisses me off... 300 bombers on nav attack, huge airfields, ample av support, air HQ, good leaders, best morale, hundreds of fighters on escort and sweep, good weather and we still don't get them to attack high value naval targets at ONE hex range... once more applause to the air routines... wonderfully...

while there seem to be most escorts and the sweepers in the air, there is no reason to only see 20% of the available bombers when a BB/CA/CL task force parks just one hex away in perfect weather...

oh, nearly forgot to say, KB didn't launch either, despite still having 60% sorties and more than 400 bombers... and so the enemy gets away with it...

A good job putting the hurt on his aircraft pools. With the air units that were sunk, that is a big dent in that capability. Not to mention any pilot losses.

A lot of transports lost as well. Do you think that a port strike should be done with the KB hovering to catch any retreating ships? If you do, time it so that the surface ships with be patrolling the next turn after the port strike while others go in to bombard the airfield. Also, see if you have any ships with surface radar and put at least one into every SCTF if you can.

With the ground losses, he may not be able to take Calcutta. It will take a lot of supply and devices to get his units whole again.

KB is there to block any retreat from DH to Ceylon even though it just depends how many ships run at once and if the game decides to launch aircraft or not. Using KB on a port strike would be suizide, there are 150,000 troops, 77 units. No place is going to have more flak than DH.

Don't forget that we had very long phases in the campaign with nearly no action at all, the enemy must have so many aircraft he probably doesn't know what to do with them.

this is going to become the new reality for Diamond Harbour in the coming weeks, daily naval bombardments, both by a cruiser and a battleship group... the enemy BB/CA at the base should all have suffered damage and hopefully are all more or less out of ammo...

that's a case of doing a working thing one time too often... so far the Allied minelayers were sprinting into the Marshalls to lay their dangerous goods and came away unscatched but today we had Judies attacking them... nice to sink Terror as she carries a big load of MK16 mines... guess we've sunk them before they were able to accomplish their mission but to make sure two AMc will visit the surrounding bases...

moved 200 Helens into the area to start bombing Diamond Harbour... starting at 15000ft was a horrible mistake as we lose one and a halve dozen bombers to flak... should have known better, what a silly start of our attacks... the enemy has landed around 500,000 troops and currently bashes his head at the defenses of Stalingrad, äähhhm Calcutta, without much chance to achieve something as long as our forts hold... we have already stalemated the enemy but to dislodge them we'd need 20,000 av as long as the enemy has supplies... so the goal is to destroy all available supply at Diamond Harbour... no idea how much supply he was able to unload, for sure not as much as he planned to with the carnage of the last weeks but I guess with the naval bombardments, ground attacks, daily consumption and the air attacks we can count on an average of 3-4000 tons of supply per day... let's say 100,000 tons per month, so if he was able to land 250,000 tons he would run out within 2.5 months of constant fighting...

if we manage to hold the line long enough it's not only possible to defend Calcutta but we even would have a chance to destroy the beachhead at Diamond Harbour... that would be totally insane as it could mean not only to have won the war on points but actually win it as the loss of so many divisions would top any previous Allied disasters by a big margin...

the enemy runs from DH! Oh damn it, just until yesterday I had KB in position West of Diamond Harbour but ordered the carriers back for replenishment when Mundy orders some 100 ships from Diamond Harbour to flee... looks like all warships are running now... lots and lots of bombers fail to find target messages so it's only a fragment of the bombers that actually took off (perhaps 30% of total bombers) that attack enemy shipping... BB Tennessee takes another torp from this mini strike as well as Shropshire...

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Cuttack at 47,38

xAK Joseph K. Toole, Torpedo hits 2, heavy fires, heavy damage
BB California, heavy damage
CL Caradoc
BB Tennessee, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage
CA Vincennes
CA Indianapolis, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage

another fragmented strike shows up over the enemy ships putting another torp into Tennesse which is now showing up as heavily damaged... California was missed but Indianapolis took further damage... too many torps wasted due to attack angles or the attack on a freighter... 30 bombers for only 2 hits on important targets is depressing...

we have to thank god that we even get hits but in fact that's due to most targets being damaged already... 300 bombers set to naval attack, a super high value task force six hexes away and all the game manages to do is having a couple of dozen bombers showing up over the target... California took torpedo no 5-8 and is confirmed sunk...

we had some success today but were far from what one would expect... it's just the numbers, I will never ever understand why you only get 10-20% of your bombers airborne when you meet every of those so called "conditions" except the one where you have to sacrifice your pet... and it just pisses me off again and again, no matter how many years, no matter how many turns and no matter how many discussions... it's just BS, that's not the way how war is waged, you can't just tell your officer to stay at home because there is a magic routine telling you not to fly...

KB has been ordered to turn around and move West again, the majority of enemy shipping shouldn't be fast enough to be able to run even though there will be parts surely escaping...

was long thinking about to use my heavy cruisers to hunt down the enemy West of Diamond Harbour or not... the first time my CA met BB Tennessee and California we paid a high price, losing a CA, CL, DD for literally no gain other than a torp hit on Tennessee but this time most of the enemy ships were damaged already and hopefully low or out of ammo so I decided it would be worth it to engage, especially as you never know if KB or LBA would strike at all...

so the cruisers charged in... and again it's Allied radar saving their ships as the heavily damaged ships managed to evade our cruisers... oh well, saves us from damage too most likely... already learnt I need radar at this stage of the war, gonna upgrade my ships during Spring...

LBA to fly first, again halve a dozen messages that most of the bombers that actually took off fail to find their target... as always the majority of bombers didn't take off anyways... can't complain, the tiny number of bombers do their best, sinking lightly damaged Hudson and most likely sinking Baltimore as she took a torp from a MTB earlier and suffered some additional damage...

and that's it for the morning... WHAAAT? Again, KB is sitting in perfect strike range (1 hex to the BB TF and 6 hexes to the TF further West) and perfect weather but didn't launch a single bomber other the Judies on search that made like two dozen sightings... would that enable a strike in real life? Make your guess...

another two dozen sightings during the afternoon search phase and the Admiral in charge finally decided the IJN could also launch some bombers from the carriers next to the enemy... first strike is flown against the Western task force including at least two USN CA, lots of APD and a big number of freighters and transports... that convoy has to be around 50-60 ships I guess... no torpedoes available on the carriers so all bombers attack with bombs and we do get quite some hits in not so good weather even though most of the undamaged APDs were able to dodge the bombers... both Quincy and Vincennes take 800kg bombs but none of the cruisers is listed as heavily damage so we do night follow on attacks to sink those ships...

that's the main strike on the task force just one hex to the NE of KB, totally annihilating what was still afloat... I seriously doubt that any of these ships is going to survive...

the following attacks are done by bomber groups that mostly failed to link to the main strikes, some even failed to find their targets, something one isn't used to when it comes down to carrier based bombers as they seem to do way better in finding their targets than any LBA... CA Vincennes takes another four bombs but still not shows up as heavily damaged... excpected more from those 40 bombers...

nice to also hit Newcastle, those RN light cruisers are good night fighters... unfortunately that's it already... KB didn't laucnh in the morning where LBA managed some 20% of the bombers over targets and while KB launched at least a couple of hundred bombers - guess 50% - it now was LBA not flying at all... we will move KB a tad further West to get the chance to strike at anything damaged but still being afloat to make sure we get the sinkings but I don't want to get my carriers too close to Ceylon's Eastern bases as I don't want to fall into a CAP trap or a massed 4E strike my Zekes can't counter...

Considering the amount of supplies that he must have moved to Diamond Harbor, your supply hits are probably costing a lot of supplies. Add in the amount of supplies used with the 10% increase from the units for every attack, that means that the supplies are going fast for that plus all of the supplies to repair the units plus any replacements.

A private getting orders to go to a replacement unit at Diamond Harbor: "I have just received a Death Sentence!"

It's tied to detection levels, as is nearly everything to do with the naval routine. The higher the DL, the more appropriate the strike package.

In this specific case, it seems an appropriate strike. Expecting a full sentai of 27 Frances to sortie for 3 ships in a target rich environment would be somewhat absurd.

All those enemy task forces always had highest possible detection levels. There is so much naval search around I could get 10/10 on a lonely paddle boat in the Bay of Bengal. Not only are all those task forces spotted all the time, we spot and bomb individual ships in those task forces dozens of times each of these turns. Guess we have no less than 120-150 aircraft on search, 10% of all bombers on KB plus 10% of all LBA in range plus several Dinah-III, Irving and Emily units.

If detection levels weren't high enough to have my bombers fly then I'd need 100/100 out of the 10/10 possible.

It's just the numbers, as always. And as always I'm claiming the game can't handle those. Take the Bay of Bengal, the enemy shows up with something like 600+ ships in I don't know how many task forces. I have 1000 land based aircraft and 1350 carrier based aircraft. Everything is spotted on a daily basis and detection levels are as high as they could be. What happens? Often nothing, like LBA not launching, KB not launching and so on. Would I take the time to sum it all up I'd say we had an average of 20% of the available bombers airborne each day. As with an average, there were better and worse days. But it was totally wonky what the game launched in the Bay of Bengal, even though it still turns out as a disaster for the Allied, guess how it looked like if we had an average of 50% of the bombers airborne when they had a chance to strike a target?

Now the opposite! The Gilberts and the move of two enemy task forces (one amphib, one CVE) towards Tabitauea. There was one Dinah-III and a Mavis unit down there to spot, both TFs had high detection when they came closer to Tarawa. We've moved 4 fighter units (2 George, 2 Frank) plus 5 bomber units (2 Judy, 3 Frances) into the area. And what happened? Two days in a row literally all those bombers including all fighters were attacking both the CVE and the amphib task force, heck, they even combined their alpha strikes from two different bases that were separated by a couple of hexes (Tarawa and Makin). The first day it could be super duper luck, but they did the same on day two... and to top all of this, they were doing this from two level 5 airfields that haven't even got 50% of the needed aviation support which is always brought up as one of the so much needed conditions to "coordinate"

Numbers game... totally overwhelmed routine in the Bay of Bengal and perfectly working in the Gilberts?

here's KB's first strike of the day on the Allied ships trying to make Ceylon... ordered KB three hexes further West but for what reason ever (they didn't refuel) the carriers only moved a couple of hexes and the most likely bigger convoy NE of Madras is totally out of range... oh boy... guess the attack (that actually wasn't an attack) on our CVE group that was following our lead CVs was causing that movement and screws most of our plans today... CA Vincennes is only hit by another 800kg bomb and still doesn't show up as heavily damaged but Quincy is done for sure now...
