In the case of pilots of a sub-air group which is disbanded in a isolated base with no like aircraft, the planes are destroyed. What happens to the pilots? The manual does not say. Are the pilots lost, make their way to the group reserve, now or later? As was not sure, I released all the pilots adn will see how many turns before teh group was 0 pilots, then I will disband the rump air group.

It should tell you what happens to the pilots. You can send the pilots to reserve and disband the unit.

As I released the pilots I was able to choose to send to the reserve. But if I had just disbanded the air group, I am told the planes would be destroyed but nothing stated as to what happens to the pilots. So I released the pilots to group reserve not, and will disband the group once the pilots are confirmed gone from the air group

There is no delay in confirming pilots removed by the player from a group, have left the unit. If a pilot appears on the pilot roster it is still with the group. If he doesn't appear on the pilot roster, he has left the group.

There can be a delay in appearing on the pilot roster for incoming pilots to the group. Incoming pilots are irrelevant for disbanding purposes.

I was referring to the pop-up which asks for confirmation about the disbanding of the air group, it will state what happens to the planes and the pilots.

In the following day, the Ready pilots is listed as 0(5). The pilot list list the five names in gray. I do not know if I can yet disband the sub-air group and keep the pilots in pool. The parent group can be upgraded but the 5 pilots are some of my best. As the USN players, high quality tables are rare.

You can not bring the number of pilots from a group that has a withdrawal date down to zero pilots. They will go into group reserve (grey), but will not be removed. You must first add some pilots above the number allowed, and then remove the ones you want. While keeping the number of pilots in the group equal to, or above the maximum number of planes allowed in the group.

In order to gets all the pilots that you want out of the group, you may have to do this back and forth a couple of times.

Once they were all in grey, I could then send them to reserve and they disappear from the roster. That solved the issue. I did not realize this was a two step process. 1) release the pilots to put name in gray; 2) then clidk on them again to sent to reserve and name disappears. No turn delay is needed.

For your next time, there should be a toggle down the bottom of the pilot roster screen that lets you choose where to release the pilots to.
One option is to group reserve (their name will change to grey, but they stay in the unit) while another option is general reserve and they will disappear from the unit roster.

And a third option is to reactivate them if they are already in the squadron reserve. You can do that individually or in groups of 5 or 10.
