• I'll bet they would do better with some naval search overhead.

A unit in training does not could as a full unit for stacking purposes. It counts one third of the aircraft as well for stacking limits.

Seaplanes and float planes are not supposed to count as groups, but at some bases they do and at some they don't.

• The question is, where the strong carrier forces west of the Bonins simply there to destroy our interdiction TF's or have they come out to provide cover for larger troop landings? We must stop any further substantial landings or our assault forces might not be enough to sieze Iwo-Jima, so our fleet carriers are moving up to the east of the Bonins.

Overall

• The IJN carriers moved to a point 1 hex NW of Iwo-Jima, 2 hexes from our carriers (1 hex SE of Iwo-Jima).

• I have a strong suspicion that small IJN carrier has round the western tip of New Guinea and is the reason out 2x AVD sailing to establish a new search base in the area show DL 9/9. The AVD, and an amphibious convoy with an engineer Bn, is moving to Hollandia for shelter. The P-47D2 squadron there has 31 pilots, 27 of them with experience 80 or greater. A think a raid by a small carrier would work out very badly.

• Our subs scored twice. The air battle went quite well but four of our fleet carriers were hit. Saratoga is fine while Bunker Hill and Intrepid need yard time but both are operational. Wasp's damage stands at 34-48-15-0 and she can make 14 knots, call it 4 or 5 hexes per day. The big question is will she make it past the enemy submarines. Almost all her aircraft diverted, most to Pagan, and I hope to get the parent fragments unloaded at a port so the squadrons can recombine and continue operations, but the closest ports that can dock her are Ponape and Kwajalein. Or - query - can she offload the squadrons if disbanded in a smaller port?

She should be able to unload her squadrons at a size 0 port.

Oh that's great! If she makes it through the sub gauntlet to Pagan I'll unload them there so they are all combined (the fragments on Saratoga will fly in when repaired).

Thanks.

Nicely done, again.

Have you thought further ahead, what is next. Formosa, Daito, Okinawa, Hokkaido? All of these are super difficult for Japan to defend at this stage of the game.

That was one dicey CAP trap! Well done on the results - you downed most of his carrier bomber force. The chances of him interfering in the Iwo Jima invasion are now greatly reduced.
It is almost certain his carriers will run rather than stay to provide CAP over the Bonins. You should be able to release your own bombers with just enough range to cover the Bonins and hit his incoming supplies or reinforcements. I expect he is still thinking your next target is another island in the Marianas.

I have lots of units prepared for Tinian, Saipan, Truk, and I'm earlier in the preparation stages for Guam and Chichi-Jima, with too few troops yet allocated to either. I've got a division prepared for Babeldaob. A few smaller units prepared for the 3 dot bases in the northern Marianas.

I would love to take Daito Shoto and I thought about it, but until I free up some of those troops from invasions they are already prepared for I just don't have much to prepare for that. Not enough, anyway.

Hokkaido I just have no troops for at this time.

I am working the next turn now. Wasp was defended from a sub attack (6 torps missed!) and is 4 hexes from Pagan with no subs sighted in the way.

So cleanup, so to speak, which is certainly fine and understandable.

Thanks!

In the turn I'm working now he hasn't sighted any of the transport convoys so he might well think that, but a sub got a look at an OBB between Pagan and Iwo-Jima, so it's hard to say what he might be guessing.

I'm keeping the bombers to 1 hex range for now; I think their presence will deter any convoys from putting into Chichi-Jima or Haha-Jima.

His carriers vanished, so they must be back, out of search range. I figure he'll replenish their air groups, but when my CVE's arrive with the transports there will be lots more allied fighters (and bombers) to contend with, and when the other 9x CVE arrive yes another couple of hundred.

Yes, that's been my plan after Iwo-Jima, with Iwo as a base to limit Imperial reinforcement of the other Bonins to airlifts.

• It looks like Pagan's port facilities will expand to size 2 in about 3 more days. The Iwo-Jima CVE/OBB force and the invasion convoys will rendezvous 5 hexes NE of Agrihan tomorrow and the day after (for the slower landings ships). From there the slower ships will need 2 days to make a position 1 hex off of Iwo-Jima, then land the following day. Let's say D-Day is 5 days from now.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• No action, no sightings. There is heavy rain, however. Convoys will remain under cover for another day.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• There is a small TF at Ambon but no good ID on ship composition.

• Our 2x AVD's are 1 hex from Noemfoor without DL and a PBY Sqn has flown in to begin search operations tomorrow. Our 4EB have the airfield at Ambon at 99% damage and will switch to the port.

Philippines

China

India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina

• The 4 squadrons of P-38H operating here are upgrading to P-38J.

Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia

• No incidents. Tomorrow the invasion forces will be with the battle fleet 1 hex from Iwo-Jima.

• A couple of enemy subs are harassing the fleet position and more are setting up on the route to Pagan which the OBB's will use when falling back to replenish.

Overall

• No carrier info.

• In addition to consolidation by seizing temporarily bypassed bases after Iwo-Jima, some wound licking and upgrades will be in order. Landings tomorrow: cross your fingers!

West Coast USA, Alaska, Hawaii

Pacific

• The task forces additional two fast battleships and nine CVE will both rendezvous south of Marcus with oilers tomorrow before heading toward Iwo-Jima. The CVE bring well over 200 additional aircraft.

• All of Wasp's aircraft are now rejoined into complete squadrons at Pagan; all are stood down due to lack of room at the airbase to operate them. There are 37x Hellcat, 17x Helldiver, and 1x Avenger. The Hellcats are available to replace dive bombers on a fleet carrier if I think it warranted. Pagan's port has reached size 2 and construction now switches back to the airfield, which is currently size 3 + 18%. Four more engineer Bns will land in about two days.

New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, Solomons, Papua New Guinea, New Britain

• Darwin airfield complex is now at max size of 9.

DEI, Dutch New Guinea, Borneo, Malaya

• The ships at Ambon appear to have moved north after this encounter.

• Both carriers are afloat, but Santee's fate is touch and go with damage of 41-94(62)-13(10)-0. Copahee is 15-48(35)-3(2)-0. They are together with 2x DD and lots of additional escorts are rushing from Pagan, and the good news is the escort TF is not spotted yet. APA Arthur Middleton has modest damage and will continue with the landings tomorrow. In the animation the torpedo hit came after the sub was forced to the surface and pummeled by multiple rounds of gunfire. The USN is claiming two subs sunk today near Iwo-Jima.

• Iwo-Jima now shows 6 units, 8,400 troops, 85 guns, 15 AFV; obviously reinforcing by air and/or submarine. We've seen lots of H8K2 Emily shot down over the last several days with another 10 today, so air it is.

• We lost 1x LST to shore battery fire, otherwise shore batteries seemed a non-issue. In the animation all enemy units' AV were 0 (zero!) following the Allied artillery fires during the shock attack. That gave me high hopes but I suppose the level 6 fortifications made the difference. Our casualties were high but most disabled.

• Our ships have more than 50,000 additional supply to land (which will bring the total to over 140,000 tons) so they will be exposed to fire again, but that should also serve to fatigue the defending land units. Disruption and Fatigue are quite high after the landing and shock attack, but there is no rush to the next assault. 12 more Emily were shot down today and it's hard to imagine many getting through our CAP. The additional CVE will be on station in 3 or 4 days.

Complete combat report attached.

witpqs: In the animation all enemy units' AV were 0 (zero!) following the Allied artillery fires during the shock attack. That gave me high hopes but I suppose the level 6 fortifications made the difference. Our casualties were high but most disabled.

Don't disabled squads still fight at about 1/10 of usual strength?

Sure, but to get the high adjusted AV they had I am supposing was due to the fortification level plus the rough terrain.
