Sorry to be so dense but I can't figure out what good it does to produce support units (artillery, sappers, construction, mortars. etc.). I go to a HDQ unit, use either form or assign then click on the support unit, strength points deduct and next turn the HdQ (usually) has added the indicated support unit. But how does this help the corps increase in strength? Perhaps the computer, aware that a specific HDQ has a number of powerful units attached to it automatically increases the combat strength in battle even tho the strength number doesn't increase? Any help will, as usual, be greatly appreciated.

The support units are like other combat units that can be committed to battle. Have a look at a battle result with some support units and you will see they have added combat value and maybe some disruption to the battle.
