Got an eye on these two Matrix/Slitherine games: WarPlan and Shadow Empire.

I have an anniversary coupon that expires in 12 days, and both titles have the same price. No chances of a sale on any of them.

Which one should I get?

The only drawback for WarPlan is I have TOAW IV. And for Shadow Empire, that it look kinda hard on the micro manage side.

I want both titles badly, but I have budget for only one.

So, besides the comparing apples to oranges thing, which one do you recommend?

I'm suggesting Shadow Empire on the strength of what I know of the designer.

Shadow Empire (Unless you really want WW2).

You wont have a game anything like SE on your HD. A whole new experience.

I'd go with Shadow Empire. There is a definite learning curve but the reward is substantial. Its a genuinely interesting and novel game.

I can't quite get over the threshold with War Plan, its too similar to Strategic Command and other similar WW2 grand strategies

Exactly why I think SE is the better choice for the budget strapped gamer. A whole new experience which you can't really get from other games.

Thanks for the input, it is much appreciated.

I agree with what you say, the problem is that I'm 100% sure I'm gonna love WarPlan.

Toying now with the idea of getting both.

I have not played SE.

I HAVE played Warplan, and it's really good.

I disagree that it's a lot like TOAW. Warplan is a much cleaner, faster paced game(no offense to the veritable TOAW). Warplan also captures the feel of WWII much better IMO.

Likely you can't make a bad choice, as SE is well reviewed. Just putting my two cents in. WP is a really good game.

The developer is not Vic, his name is Alvaro or Al.

I have both. I would go with SE unless you don't really like sci fi type game or really really want to play a WWII game. SE borders on being unique among war games. Warplan is another take on WWII strategic level, though it is very good. You won't go wrong either way.

Vic is SE maker.

Sorry misread your post, your correct Vic is SE Dev and Al is WP Dev. 😊

Is Shadow Empire still waiting for a Steam release?

I playtested both games and played both for just pure fun a lot. Both top-notch. You can't go wrong either way. Just depends on what genre you're most into at the moment.

Up above in the thread someone gave the nod to SE because of the developer - Vic is superb. Alvaro for Warplan is the same, very responsive, has a great track record of listening to the players.

From what I've read in the Shadow Empire forums, yes, it does. No idea what's the planned date though.

In the end, I bought SE and only SE. I feel bad for the WarPlan developer and specially bad for me because I know I would have loved it, but in the end, even with a 31% discount, I could afford only one game.

So I'll buy WarPlan for Christmas instead.

Thanks for the input, I'm gonna read the manual!

EDIT:

December 3rd seems to be the Steam release date for Shadow Empire.

This is the thread where I've read it:

Neither the first nor the second.
When you hesitate between two games, a third will be better.
