If he's spotted you coming and has the PH AF fully built up, 600 A/C might certainly not be enough if he has enough fighters based there. If he hasn't spotted you and is lax in his defenses, well could be another bloodbath.

Edit: Also, I'm not sure if the next few turns have already been played, but if not the title of the post can be an Op Sec issue if your opponent happens to see it randomly while browsing the main forum.

they play 2 turns cycle, probably nothing he can do now, even if he correctly figures it out

but the question, the gamble, is what is in PH? he might not have a lot of goodies there if he is going all over Asia

No worries about opsec, I already had the turn with the strike results when posting the "teaser picture" above.

The "why" is easy to eplain:

After losing a couple of CVs off Japan, my opponent Ed is keeping his CVs under LBA umbrella. Even with help of my LBA, KB would have no chance at all to score against the Allied Death Star. Leaving KB in port to be destroyed by port bombing raids isn't a sexy option either. Leaves convoy raiding in the LOC. But the Pacific is large and finding convoys isn't easy, as have shown my first and second raiding attempts with single CVEs. So the idea was to find a base that may serve as a refueling stop and hoping to catch some convoys in the vicinity. The most likely refueling stop is Pearl - and it is also the only base which promised a chance to slip-in undetected by Allied air patrols [via the Midway - Aleutians gap]. The "anniversary strike" and "AFAIK hasn't been tried before" aspects added further motivation to try it. And I took great comfort from imagining my opponent watching the replay and cursing me , so I gambled.

I had reconnoitered the route before with my submarines to sniff-out the limits of his air patrols or the unlikely possibility of picket ships. My only fear was running into a sub. One of Ed's subs promptly sighted KB moving out while still being close to Japan, but the sub only reported Shokaku and a few escorts, so I decided to go ahead, hoping he would assume that I would abort whatever operation Shokaku was on after being spotted. And luckily KB met no other sub on the way.

Alas, lack of fuel prevented a full-speed run to Pearl to get two full days of strikes. A full speed run-in would most likely have caused KB to abort and RTB for running low on fuel before coming in strike range. I also set the planes on naval strike with port attack only as secondary objective, as I prefer to sink ships at sea rather than leave them heavily damaged but salvagable at a port. And 2-day-turns coupled with range settings for the long-legged Jills resulted in an "hors d'oeuvre" on Dec 6th.

Results are ok if not great, at least I caught Ed with his pants down and devastated a loaded troop convoy - this and Ed's voice I hear in my head screaming "You bastard!" made it worth the risk.

I do have some AOs with the last fuel reserves following the same route through the Midway-Aleutians gap, I intend to retreat temporarily to refuel and then try another strike or to put KB between Pearl and the West Coast. It is a suicide sortie, the KB will stay in the area until sunk. No remorse, since it is "use them and lose them" vs "don't use them and lose them anyway".

Here is the shortened action report:

For some reason not a single plane shoxed up on LRCAP on any of the strikes against the DDs - what a bummer! Probably the weather. Too bad the IJN does not have underway replenishment for air sorties!

The games has advanced to mid-January 1945 – which I consider a “win” since I never expected to reach that year.

After the Death Ride of the surface fleet in November, it was the turn of the carrier force to meet its cruel fate in December in the guise of the Allied death star. After the successful anniversary raid on Pearl Harbor, the plan was to refuel and to hang-out between PH and CONUS to see if I could catch some convoys, and eventually try a factory strike at the Boeing plant at Seattle.

Alas, a small enemy TF of 2 DDs found my refueling group in the Aleutians – Midway gap and sank two out of three AOs. As a consequence, KB had to RTB – with barely enough fuel left to reach Shikuka on Sachalin.

I figured that I could at least stir-up some troubles in the Aleutians on the way back and in fact KB managed to sink some small fry and a couple of xAKs up North. However, I have forgotten that air ops will eat op points and thus progress towards Shikuka was less than expected – KB ran dry one day short of Paramushiro.

In the meantime, air search and picket ships observed the Allied carriers coming north with a vengeance. They caught KB in the Sea of Okhotsk between Paramushiro and Sakhalin. Hoping for bad weather as a savior but fully expecting KB’s demise, I had ordered the entire plane complement of KB to transfer to land bases in the area, so the Allied Death Star had no troubles at all to sink the entire KB around Paramushiro – except some die-hards who managed to struggle into Shikuka. Although the Allied death star stayed off Shikuka to bomb the port as well, a few survivors managed to gather enough fuel to flee south to Toyohara and then on to Hokkaido in time and under the cover of darkness. You will hear from them again later.

The offloaded planes heroically tried to strike back at the Death Star, but I have not build-up the bases in the North and scattered strikes from the few small airfields in the area made no impression upon the Allies. Nor did the PTs and midget subs positioned in the island gaps leading into and out of the Sea of Okhots, so after wreaking havoc, the Allies left the area unmolested and went back to the East China Sea.

On that other end of the Home Islands, naval actions have been limited to fruitless nightly forays of PTs and destroyers and the deployment of midget subs around Tokara Retto against Allied surface bombardments. These and bombing attacks clearly indicate that this base was next on Ed’s target list. Air transport, fast transports and barges tried to slip-in reinforcements and supplies, but these won’t make any difference. In fact, when supplies arrive at night, they are being destroyed by next morning’s air strikes before they could be distributed to the starving ground units.

Now, although the flower of the Combined Fleet has been destroyed, the few remaining assets do not cease to annoy the Allies. As indicated, some die-hards have escaped the slaughter of KB in the Sea of Okhotsk- and undaunted they have ventured out again against the enemy. CV Hiryu, CVEs Shinyo and Kaiyo and CS Nisshin managed once again to slip undetected through the Midway-Aleutians gap to disrupt Allied convoys:

Turning to the air war:

Lots of sweeps against my fighter concentration at Nagasaki/Sasebo where sheer numbers allow me to give as well as I get against the Allied fighters.

The 4Es however are successfully grinding down my night fighters, industries and manpower – and worse yet also my day fighters due to highly effective night strikes against airfields. Sure, 1800+ fighters at a single base means lots of target on the ground, but I still don’t understand how fragmented strikes of a handful of B-29s per sortie can destroy scores of planes on the ground – a size 9 airbase levels means multiples airbases and by now the Japanese should have gotten the idea of dispersal. Instead, I have the impression all planes are being bunched-up on the apron surrounded by lights spelling out “bomb here”. Some examples:

The losses on the ground and the fact that the airbase has accumulated 43 service damage and 36 runway damage has prompted me to rebase my main force to Fukuoka.

I have tried some CAP traps over sacrificial cargo TFs sent into the East China Sea with limited success. I also tried a cap trap over Tokara Retto – which ran into the air cover of the unexpected invasion of the neighboring island of Yakushima, resulting in a big fight with heavy losses on both sides.
This invasion was the trigger for what probably was the last massive Kamikaze strike which expended most of the remaining older airframes. In fact, I still have hundreds of Nates and early Oscars in the pools, but no groups which could use them – PDU off does not allow the downgrading of airgroups. I will receive some Nate groups later, but I doubt I will have another chance to strike.
Anyway, here are the results – heavy losses with nothing to show for, until finally CAP got tired and AA ammo low.

1 CVE sunk for sure and probably three more - true to the motto "Combustible, Vulnerable, Expendable".

What else:

As a Japanes ground pounder, the place to be is Cebu. The only place in the PI not occupied by the Allies - I'm wondering why Ed has spared it - it is being defended by a lone Naval Guard unit and with light industry and resource production, it is swimming in supplies - over 7k available.

This is more than in the entire China theater, where my poor troops are out of ammo, out of food and out of hope. Any attempt to defend a location is utterly futile, without supplies my units take losses worse than 10:1 even when fighting only Chinese forces. Furthermore, once the Yangtze line is breached, there are only wide open plains with nowhere to hide from the murderous Allied ground bombings. I will try to evacuate the IJA infantry to Korea and then to Japan, while killing useless eaters... er, I mean while delaying the Allies with the Chinese puppet units, base forces and other expendables. China is written off.

LOL - yes I know, drop in a bucket.

The game may end today, Ed needs only 1267 points for auto-victory and the fall of Shanghai will yield 2300 points for the city alone, not counting the LCU losses.

I have never played with VPs in mind and I am loss averse, so force preservation was more important for me than defending VP-rich locations tooth and nails (and probably to lose them anyway just a bit later, and the defending army as well).

So I'm watching right now what might be the last turn.

Ed and I have discussed terms, I offered to continue past auto-victory but he said his aim was to see the strat bombing campagin and obtain auto-victory without invading Japan's proper. That done, it's up to me.

I still have some assets - five BBs (three still repairing), one CA, one CLAA and a handful of DDs and subs, plus about 2000 planes - but the economy is in shambles and the supply situation catastrophic. Ed would probably continue the land war in China and on into Manchukuo and Korea - which given the lack of supplies would be a one-sided slaughter - before landing on the Home Islands - which by then should be starving as well, since his strat bombing is destroying more and more of the light industries. So all I could do is hoping for some pin-****s, so I will accept defeat.

Since we are both happy to have found a reliable opponent with a "slow game" RL time schedule that suits both of us, we will reverse roles and start a new game when this one is over.

Edit: And to prove how much I am loss averse (and how bad I am at managing and keeping track of my assets...) - I still have seven (not five as indicated above) BBs in service - Musashi (96 days repair time), Mutsu, Nagato (16), Hyuga, Kirishima, Kongo (16) and Hiei (21).

Well, close but no cigar yet.

Shanghai fell as predicted, but the invasion of Tokara Retto and the mandatory shock attack against this small island was costly for the Allies. And after many futile attempts my PTs finally managed to get past the escorts to hit some transports.

So Ed is still short 115 points of his auto-victory - at least one more turn to go.

January 25th, 1945 - the anticipated last day of the war and the last occasion to die for the Emperor!

And the candidates were numerous, eager and motivated.

For the final fireworks, everything that could fly and reach Kyushu in time to be thrown against Tokara Retto was orderd to joined the fight.

The few remaining PT boats sortied for the umpteenth and final time.

Alas, the remaining operational capital ships hiding in the far North could not make it in time. They will probably end as artifical reefs at some Pacific atoll after being used for target practise - how sad!

However, all this was not enough to buy another day of respite.

Since all Japanese planes had been dedicated to the offensive, the Allied Liberators and Superfortress faced no aerial opposition over Sasebo and Nagasaki and laid waste to large parts of the two cities, with fire levels reaching 142423.

The damage from this strat bombing was more than enough to gain the necessary VPs - or in other words, the losses and destruction have been so horrific that the Japanese leaders decided to end the futile resistance now and there - too many people have already died for the Emperor.

Wow, hard to believe it is over - after 6 years, 1 month and 15 days of playing sometimes just one, sometimes up to four 2-day-turns per week due to RL contraints on both sides.

What a long and often rough ride!

The Ambon Ambush, the Attu Battleship massacre, the siege battles in China crowned by the fall of Chungking, the Carnarvon Carnage, the pyrrhic victory in the battle for Barbar, the Alpha Strike of the Sabang carrier clash which could not prevent the masterful strategic operation against the Japanese jugular vein, the oil of Palembang, the long retreat from Burma to China while trying to stay ahead of the Allied Armies, the glorious 3-Days-Battle off Kanoya - a.k.a. "Black September" on the Allied side :-), the repeated savaging of the CVEs, the Death Ride of the IJN surface forces, the Pearl Harbor Anniversary strike, the sacrifice of the IJN flattops and the pin-****s up to the very last day - and finally a well-deserved victory for my honorable opponent Ed aka IdahoNYer, a true gentleman.

I still have a couple of hundreds modern planes and a lot of crappy ones in the pools and ample good-enough pilots to man them, and the IJN could still field a sizeable battleship force, if permitted to finish repairs / refits and there is the iron reserve of fuel for one last sortie. The ground forces are a mixed lot, a sizeable number of divisions is still at full strength, but there are also a lot of shattered remnants. The supply situation is catastrophic in China, Manchukuo and Kora, precarious in the Home Islands - way too few supplies for a prolonged resistance.

But the war has been lost a long time ago when it became impossible to ship home the oil and fuel from Palembang. The stop of all but the most urgent production - modern fighters - and the trickle of oil from sources in the Home Islands and China just made it possible to prolong the agony.

Some die-hards in my Armed Forces demand to fight-on and defeat the Allies on the holy ground of the Home Islands - but that is unrealistic.

The world has suffered enough - let's make peace and be friends again. Of course Japan will need money from the former enemies to rebuild the country and they should prevent any new troubles by buying lots of the office and home entertainment electronics and the cars we are going to produce soon!

Congratulations on the game!

Too bad your kamikazes could not have been that effective earlier against those CVE TFs.

Thanks guys!

I'm reading Ed's excellent AAR and my own humble one in parallel to compare.

It is funny to rediscover the big plans made six years ago and to see how the game has actually evolved.

And again the old adage has been proven to be true - no battle plan survives contact with the enemy!

Awesome Uwe!

Just finished going through the AAR. Very much enjoyed "seeing the other side", as well as your personal touches throughout. I'm still chuckling over the "P-38s sweeping, LST weeping" line!

But geeze….I'm asking myself if I really want to do this from the other side after going through the AAR! What you accomplished with major industry issues is simply phenomenal. The late game was the most challenging of all for me, and you consistently bettered me with MTBs, SSXs, and those damnable Kamikazes. I just hope I can do half as well as you while playing the dark side. I'm positive I'll glitch production even more...so you have that going for ya!

Again, for everyone's benefit on the forum - thanks for a great game and being such a fantastic opponent. A true gentleman as well...I really appreciated the mulligans when I jacked up some settings.
