DW:U actually did pretty well on Steam (negative reviews mostly being down to the steep price of £45) and got Strategy Game of the Year 2014 at Rock Paper Shotgun.

I'm intrigued by your reasoning - what makes you feel that it would be better if DW2 is 'niche'?

I think that "Distant Worlds" should stay true to what it is... there will always be a market for games of this type. We don't want another watered down (somewhat broken) game like Stellaris just to appeal to a broader audience. In my opinion it is worth the higher price so the game can stay true to what the developers wants it to be.

I think there always will be a market for games like these but we have to be prepared to pay a higher premium for it as we are less people that will buy it.

I don't think it is bad if more people find the game and wants to play it, that would be excellent. But I also think we have to accept the fact that it is a niche game and it will not attract the masses like some other simpler less deep 4x strategy games out there.

It will be what it will be.

That being said I can't imagine it being anything more than an improved DWU (that's a good thing to me mind you). If it's not broke...

I'd like to see future DLC like Stellaris. It would keep the game fresh in my mind, and is another source of revenue of course. Ship packs, race packs, and scenario packs. Purely opinion.

DWU must have done well (relatively) or DW2 wouldn't be made. Game designers have mortgages to pay too.

It could be the developer has another job alongside this.

Yes.... DLC that give us more ship graphics and minor addition to the game with races is fine. The people that create that usually don't work on the game code anyway and it really don't change the game. So you don't need to buy it.

I think it also depends entirely on how their team look like and if they have dedicated graphics artist working full time or if they hire them on a consulting basis.

Some studios work more for larger content upgrades rather than smaller but more frequent none essential stuff. Not every studio can afford small frequent DLC, or so I believe.

So like, I have been playing the Distant worlds universe for over a few years, and I love it... I recently made an account, though I rarely interact with others...

All I can say though is you guys give me hope for the gaming industry, if you guys heard my reaction I gave to hearing about distant worlds 2 from my parents, you would hear about how they thought I was screaming and dying in my room at 1 am.

I cant think of any game I have every publicly in any way, was really excited to be released. YOU MOTHERFRICKERS, ARE AMAZING!

I am trying my best to not be one of those blind annoying fan boys, but I seriously love you all! DW:U is my second favorite of all time ( Factorio is literally just hard electronic drugs to me because my autism).

Your games are so underrated, and while I think there are some solid 4x games out there, when ever I hear someone talking about 4x, I always refer them to distant worlds universe.

But yah, keep being you guys, and I hope this new game does not trade mechanical depth and stuff for graphics (though it honestly looks like that wont happen xD)

also please allow multicore support in this new game ;-;

I want this game to not just be capped due to my core having an alright cpu, and wanna make my whole machine wanna light on fire in the late game

First, we confirmed that Distant Worlds 2 will be a 2020 release and there will be a beta test starting sometime next year. Watch this forum for more news on that.

Very disappointing not to see any news on this in the 2020 releases update - or at all really.

Yes, not great. It would be courteous to simply give an update on what to expect with regards to timing. I'm not asking as someone who is impatient or who feels self-entitled, but if you make statements about dates, it's good to keep your fans in the loop if the timeframe has needed an adjustment. Or don't mention a date/year at all!

...but 2020 happened and everything's a mess.

I'd like to know too, but I'm not entitled to know. It will launch sometime... or it won't.

The game is under development. Good games always take time to make. Hurried games with bugs and incomplete features are not something I want. Pretty much every single thing in 2020 has been delayed. Distant Worlds 2 will be no different. Let's keep a positive mind for now. Since the game is already in Alpha testing, and we will have more information in December 2020.

My goodness, I feel a good chunk of the comments on this entire thread are essentially people repeating the same thing: "It'll be done when it's done, good games always take a while. Don't rush, devs!" I don't believe that is the issue. The issue here is with regards to communication - if a publisher and developer announce that the game with be released by the end of the year and then that year goes by without a peep of a follow-up to that statement, I would consider that bad practice. Yes I'm looking forward to DW2, yes I am being patient and yes, we shouldn't feel entitled to anything...but DW fans could be treated a bit more fairly here.

This is how Matrix has always been. They usually don't announce anything until it is very close to completion. The Dec 2019 reveal was something that was unusual as per the usual communication standards they have. Even I wish they had the sort of communication and PR paradox had. A game, this big and complicated. It's probably difficult to give a proper release date until everything is fixed.

Waited for this game for nearly 6 years. I guess I am used to it. They did say they will give us an update in December. Lets wait.

Same thing we always do, complain!

I'm sure informing the dozens of people following an obscure thread on a dead internet forum about a game no one knows about is not the top of Matrix's agenda, but releasing details of a game more than "once a year" is not that hard.

Maybe it is hard. Who knows? I don't work for them. Company policy could state no updates until certain milestones are reached. Or they don't care. Again who knows?

The point is, it's out of our control. I have other things to do than complain, but feel free to complain to get the obligatory, "Things are progressing. We'll have an update soon" post.

DW2 where out thou

i'll more patient if i know DW2 will have the synergies of X4 station building, supply chain, maybe some elements of factorio visual direction

my preference is on creative simulation, discovery vs warfare systems, fleet fights akin to eve online (w/o the tidi lol) and no crazy event spam like stellaris, i cant stand its event system, im a simulation guy.

Thanks for the update Erik...... no rush at all.
Hope you and the development team are doing well during this pandemic as I know the business I own has been hit really hard this year.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with in DW2.

Roy

I wouldn't mind even a 2022 release to be honest. Feel like companies push their releases too hard and too early. I often wish they would finish the game, and then spend a much greater amount of time testing and working out the bugs than they usually do. Would give the artists more time to make better graphics too since most of that is aesthetic and not going to conflict with the testing much.

When i get the DW munchies i get them pretty hard (ive been playing since release) hell even windows 10 20h2 is behaving itself well, seems to be a bit of an uptick in performance, over the years, with my 5yr old 980ti i7 5820k machine. Dw is a true joy. Like watching a ant colony or something like logistical and infrastructural play out, like plane or boat spotting.
I've been playing it allot the last week, trying to find that balance of what i like, figured i like to tone down gravitic weapons allot so not so many races use it, since i like lazor pew pew more, added a few more races from expanded universe, tempted to try and change the hyperdeny graphics to more of a huey look.
Point is
I really really freaking love Distant Worlds!

Yes, exactly. I do not want to be a beta tester.
Meanwhile, I play other indie games.

For instance "Star Traders: Frontiers" or "Astra Exodus" (from Slitherine). Its interesting and close to MOO2. Even better than at the first look and in my eyes better than the rating.

Considering the absolute PR disaster unfolding with CD Project Red after another Cyberpunk Delay. I say Eric is doing the right thing by not announcing a date.
