1. I noted to my dismay that ship to ship (surface) combats since ca. 3-4/43 mostly is inconclusive or worse goes to the Allies, even with same numbers or more IJN ships. Even against PT boats we manage often only 1-2 destroyed, but they hit 2 cruisers and at least 2 DDs with torps. It is now mid 7/43. Note I have seen in AARs that even in 45 the IJN manages to wipe out 5-6 PT´s at one battle..without the PTs hitting back. So perhaps my orders / knowledge sucks..and Allied player makes better orders.

I know Allied radar plus also Fletchers with better speed/armor is a big factor. But we do not better vs. other DDs too.Is the radar such a big factor or am I making mistakes?

Here are some examples (last page)if you want to view the combats: https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4175198&mpage=5

Our hit rate for both guns and torps is quite low (this was better before) and ships are 70+ exp. I use the best nav rating admirals already eg. Yamamoto and Tanaka etc. Plus most ships have the best captains. This did not chance to eg. 2/43 when the results were still better...I read the manual again, but not much there for this topic.

2. Emily carries only 2 bombs at normal range ? It should have 4. Also wondered why it seems even more vulnerable than e.g Helen Bs. The stats suggest Emily should be much more difficult to shoot down then Helens. But I attacked the same target same alt and lost 3 Emilies to Flak but no Helen. Use as a bomber seems very restricted....note Allied pilots said, Emily was the toughest Japanese plane

Still a newbie in many aspects, so hope not stupid questions
I can copy more complete combat reports for more experienced people to analyze later. If it would help.

Don't you think there is a reason Japan did not use Emilys as bombers? Hint: size and speed

They did use it sometimes for bombing (eg. at night or when not much resistance expected) - will be the bombload of eg. Catalinas also reduced. Is this a general feature for patrol planes?

However not so important issue No.1 is much more pressing.

My experience is quite the opposite. I am in 5/43 and IJN is regularly raiding Darwin with BBs and CAs. My PTs at Darwin didn't hit anything so far but already lost around 20.

This is troubling and what I thought is more normal even in 43. So something seems wrong on my side.

If you have time can you copy 2-3 CR´s ? I will copy some more of mine too (except the ones in the link)

Alpha, i don't know much about it but i have been reluctant to commit my surface combat TFs when moonlight is so low. I'm in 12/42. Looks like it might get worse.

As one can see, as good as ZERO torp hits from us and also low number of gun hits.. not have a single win even with more ships. Only against PTs that were out of fuel / out of torps

It looks like your task forces repeatetly ran into new allied task forces , which depleted all their ammo and ran them out of ops points. You can help this issue by using smaller task forces as your fresh task forces will not use their torpedos and such untill they are in combat. Issue with Emily ? In your AAR you linked it looks like they are using torpedos and when they are doing torpedo strikes they go down to 100 feet to drop it regardless of altitude you set them to attack , thats why they took more casualties to flak compared to Helen , Helen is bombing from whatever altitude you set them to

Possibly he has more TFs but even then the first 1-2 encounters should be then more succesful. Also the IJN has not PTs at this point so can not counter - as DDs seem to lose against PTs too.. Also this is against the mass of force or Schwerpunkt rule in war.

I meant when Emily bombs land targets (NORMAL range):

Morning Air attack on Cooktown , at 92,137

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 22 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 8 minutes

Japanese aircraft
H8K2 Emily x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
H8K2 Emily: 7 damaged
H8K2 Emily: 1 destroyed by flak

Airbase hits 3
Runway hits 9

Aircraft Attacking:
17 x H8K2 Emily bombing from 10000 feet
Airfield Attack: 2 x 250 kg GP Bomb

Work on your task force composition.

Don't fight PT boats with 3% moonlight with anything but 2-3 destroyers. Preferably don't fight. You can strafe PT boats pretty effectively.

I almost always look at PT boats as vp gifts to Japan.

Well as you encounter more and more task forces with the same task force , your task forces detection level increases which helps your enemy and i said before it depletes your ammmo. I usually get good results with a surface combat fleet setup like this ; 5-6 task forces of DD's consisted of 2-3 DD's (depending on availability) at front followed by small fleets consisting of 1 flagship and DD's. For example , i pair up a CL and DD , CA and 2 DD's , BB and 3 DD's. This kind of fleet composition will conserve ammo , run enemy out of ops points , waste enemy ammo and torpedos before they get to flagships , PT's boats are specially vulnerable to repeated combats as they have low fuel capacity it will run them out of fuel and make them a sitting duck

The Emily is too valuable to use as a bomber. You need them for ASW and Search.

Always use the correct tool for the job at hand. Using a search plane as a ground or naval attack isn't correct.

1.

After 1943 rolls around, that's to be expected. Allied ships do progressively improve, and IJN ships (generally) stay trailing (or get worse on occasion - looking at some of the BB "upgrades"). IJN upgrade paths for destroyers normally involve losing a turret, which is effectively a 33% reduction in firepower. Japanese radar is also not as effective as their Allied counterparts.

So it sounds like you've got all the basic steps down (captain & crew), so the problem is a bit more in employment.

Re-read section 10.1 of the manual relating to detection levels. As a very crude summary, better DL = better results in surface combat. You won't make much gains in DL via radar as Japan, so the heavy lifting needs to fall on air naval search. More is better, and recon helps too.

From the attached combat reports, it looks like DL is the culprit here. Allied forces get the drop on IJN forces on both occasions due to better DL thanks to radar. Need to counter with better nav search (both day and night) to counter.

My other suggestion is to reconsider what your fighting and with what. My rule of thumb with the IJN is to never fight equally, always try to fight up. An equal destroyer vs destroyer fight will likely result in a strategic Allied victory (Allies can trade something like 8:1 in fleet destroyers and still come out ahead IIRC). Stick an IJN CA force into the mix instead and the results will likely be better (and the 20cm guns breeze through Fletcher armour). Equal fights with the IJN are a losing proposition.

Against USN crusiers? Send BB's. Don't mess with USN CL/CA without the heavy stuff, the machine gun like 5inch and 6inch guns will pepper anything smaller than the Kongos.

2.

Several reasons.

- Speed: slower, so gets spotted earlier (so CAP gets more warning), attacking fighters have better outcomes against it in air-to-air combat
- Manoeuvre: good luck flying evasively in a literal flying boat.
- Altitude: big factor with the Allies here. Anything under 7k (IIRC) is in Bofors range. Bofors is embedded in just about every Allied LCU in great numbers. Doesn't matter if there's no dedicated AA if the ten units at a base have 12 Bofors each, resulting in 120 guns firing at a large, slow target.

Right. SS (surface to surface) radar help to raise the DL on enemy vessels. Better DL equates to first shots.

This 100% works I hate it but it works :)

To avoid what Evoken has described I have seen HR's in the past that set a minimum size for TF ie minimum 4 or 6 ship sized TF ie if 18 ships in origin hex going to same target hex TF's would have to be be 3 x 6 ship rather than 6 x 2 ship and 1 x 6 to same target from same origin hex now clearly some flexibility is required as ships depart from different origins and its not always possible to avoid tiny TF's but deliberatly using mutliple small TF's is extremely effective but I personally dont like it and try to avoid it. Or if 20 ships available then 3 x 6 and 1 x 2 would be allowed etc etc

Normally my SCTF's are 8 ships which seems like a good balance of size and effectiveness I will go down lower than that if I have insufficient ships or need to hit multiple objectives

The one circumstance where I have used lots of small SCTF's (and I hate myself for it !!!) is when trying to get a bombardment TF through to a port with lots of small ASW and transport and PT Boat TF's protecting it

If you dont clear them out your heavies are useless so thats one of those exceptions that both sides need to accept multiple DD TF's or it becomes unfair on the attacking side - more of an issue of the allies late war where the japanese can use sacrificial defences - it comes down to is the Japanese player deliberatly being gamey in trying to protect his port with lots of small trasnport TF's in those circumstances I think its fair for the allied player to respond in kind - so IMO every HR has to be a spirit of the game thing where as long as both players are sensible its ok

IRL, each navy would analyze what happened in naval battles and adjust tactics to try and get a better outcome. The game does not perfectly model RL naval battles in that large SCTFs do not fight well, failing to use all the available ships and ammo effectively. So if the player adapts their play to the way the game engine handles things, this seems like a parallel to the RL navies adapting their tactics.

As Alfred often states, "Every action taken by a player has a counter-measure available on the other side". The player defending against the multiple small TFs has ways of dealing with them. If the defender does not have enough ships present to match the enemy's numbers, that is a real-life handicap that should result in their disadvantage in sequential combats.

I think its the difference between playing the sim and playing the game. I played a game playing opponent many years ago he was a mechanic knew the best way to get results out of the engine and I just couldn't cope with it because I would use historical TF sizes, sweeps etc etc and I was acting in a quasi historical manner and he didn't he was playing the game I was refighting WITP

The game ended because our mindsets were so different and every time he exploited a mechanic I hated it we ended up calling it quits in Jan 42 when we realised our approaches to the game were not compatible.

No issue with how he played or how I played but when a game player is playing the game v a quasi historic player who imposes limits on what they will do (often without realising they are doing it) there will only be one winner and we both realised we were in for years of wrangling hence why we stopped

You and Alfred are correct BBfanboy BUT just because there is a counter it ruins my immersion in the simulation if I have to start using them so often I wont use them on principle

Agreed - both players should be on the same page - historical simulation or game mechanic optimization. I find historical simulation hard to do because you have foreknowledge of what happened IRL and how the game will handle a similar event. Kudos to you for doing historical - it requires some significant self-restraint!

Oh I am no saint I have gotten better at exploitation since that game with Nemo

In my game with Evoken I am resizing airgroups where I can, I used small TF's 3 x 4 ship TF's to try and clear Soerbaja for my bombardment TF (it didnt work !!) and I used Yamato to bombard Bataan all things I would never have considered doing before that game.

Hell I invaded PH which I doubt would have been possible IRL and sent a BB TF to bombard San Diego (unsuccessfully)

So I am not above getting off my high horse but the point is I try not to !!!

And to be clear I broke the HR not Evoken when I launched a night city attack (forgot the HR !!!) so there are downsides to complicated HR's as they become easy to break by ignorance !!!

There actually is no real answer to this issue

That explains it, you were playing Nemo. Isn't he a shrink? Or something like that? I like to play head games with them.

But the DD Blue was on patrol, did not see the IJN ships coming in, neither did the other destroyer. After the IJN cruisers took out the two Allied cruiser detachments, the IJN cruisers left the area. The DD Blue was not engaged at all.

Work on your task force composition.

Don't fight PT boats with 3% moonlight with anything but 2-3 destroyers. Preferably don't fight. You can strafe PT boats pretty effectively.

I almost always look at PT boats as vp gifts to Japan.

I have read your ideas before with having more small TFs.. I am reluctant to do this, in war normally you don´t want to be defeated in detail (the German Schwerpunkt tactic tried to adress this but in land/air warfare not naval, also later in the war they ofc violated their own rule with having forces spread to far and ultimatly failed in WW2). Also note the CR 821Bobo has posted, there the IJN has a massive fleet and wins against PT´s without taking a single torp hit.

Also perhaps the 2-3 DDs will work against PTs better for some reason than 1/2 CL + 6 DDs (for example), but when the Allied shows up with 2/3 CLs and 7/8 Fletchers - will the 2/3 DD Tfs be able to flee from them ? In general US ships are faster.. but may try this.

I also thought night combat and low light is strength of IJN but seems with the Allied radar and they having better exp (than still in 42 except RN) this is not true anymore.

Yes, I don´t want to fight at all with the bad results, BUT one needs to protect bases right? Mines, SSX, coast art do not do this.

For strafing the PTs need to get into range which they rarely do however I had DBs in range 2-3 times but they did not fly vs. the PTs. Might have been weather or do Judy´s generally not attack PTs? Perhaps the algorythm judged against flying reasening the targets being only 1VP and not the best weather. I think PT´s are worth 4-5 point tho (in this game where they hit good and take not so much counter fire that hits them back I mean). I had sunk some PTs that ran out of fuel and also some more with Nicks at 100fts but this is a while ago. The Allies have massive CAP so I restrict the range, I do not want them flying in 100 fighters for perhaps hitting some LST´s/LCMs/AKLs etc. instead the dreaded US PT´s and DDs.

In looking ay the action reports, I'd say yes Alpha you took a couple bloody noses with torpedo hits, but you were winning many of those fights if your intent was to give better than you got. If I was a PT commander, I wouldn't view my duty as being to press home attacks against superior forces to the point of suicide. Getting in to '43, I think you're definitely in to radar disadvantage land for IJN vs larger surface units. I hope to get may pbem far enough to see how I truly feel about it. CHEERS!

Btw. is there any difference using normal movement or using a patrol order.. also when I use a reaction of 1 they will only react ONCE right? Eg. I put the fleet at Toro and at Shortlands the enemy shows up, they may react once the 1 hex to Shortland. But then not react more perhaps south pursuing the enemy perhaps. So ending up in their air range? I do not use the react order for surface or CV fleets at all, it is to unsafe for my taste. But perhaps it would work better than normal move?

Also I wonder if my fleets have a high DL the day before (with Allied recon/search sighting my fleets) this will not carry over to the new day (or in this case night?). If it carries over and DL is important also for ship to ship combat it might explain the bad results of defending TFs of mine. Even if common knowledge would be that we know the waters better than the enemy and being prepared for combat in our waters outside the base. However it is mostly the other way around the attacker gets the advantage surprising the defender often...

Surface combat reacts only if it has patrol orders. It can react multiple times in sequence. I have seen one react six times chasing the enemy in the next hex.

Carrier (CV and CVL but not CVE) react is a different beast and does not depend at all on the react setting you give the TF. The algorithm compares a number of factors including TF commander aggression to decide the react. The usual is for both sides to react towards each other. This can happen even if the TF is on a "follow" order.

DLs reset to 0 at the end of each phase (day and night). However a Mean Detection Level is calculated and waits in the background until you get another DL on the enemy. At that point the MDL will be applied to possibly elevate the DL level above what would otherwise have been the result.
