So I've been trying to get into the game but can't get past the opening screen that lists the choices like Options, Preferences, Email, etc. The problem is that moving my cursor over the items doesn't highlight them to be able to select. A couple do, but not when you hover over them, but rather away from them (if that makes sense). I was able to get my display centered at the resolution I want and am fairly good at troubleshooting command line switches but for the life of me I just can't get the cursor/item highlight process to work. I have an AMD Ryzen cpu on my laptop and my current command line is: "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -SingleCpuOrders -cpu4 -pxf1280 -pyf1024-dd_sw -skipVideo

Thanks!
Rich

For starters you need a space before the -dd_sw switch. You should also be using the -deepColor switch which helps get the video card to handle most of the video stuff instead of the computer CPU handling it.

If you are using the Beta version of the game, the path to the game executable is wrong. The Beta install creates a Beta subdirectory.

And something a lot of new players overlook - the non-Beta game install (current patch 1126a) puts a shortcut on your desktop, but it points to a menu program called Autorun.exe. Switches do not work with this shortcut. You need to create a new shortcut that points to the game executable directly.

Right click on the game executable, choose create shortcut, and move or copy the shortcut to your desktop. Right click on the shortcut and paste in your switches. Be sure to use the hyphen, not the minus sign, before your switches.

Thanks for catching my error with the spacing on the command line. After trying so many combinations I guess I missed that one. Unfortunately, it made no difference nor did adding the -dd_sw or deepColor switches. The game loaded fine with that command line but I could only get two items to highlight.. Email (by hovering over the Solomons) and Hotseat (by hovering SE of Australia). No other items highlight when I hover my cursor over them to be able to select.

This command line gets my cursor to highlight items on the opening menu but the game loads slow and is off center by a fair amount and when I click on one of the menu items nothing happens... "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -SingleCpuStart -cpu4 -pxf1280 -pyf1024 -skipVideo

I knew about needing to point to the exe so I had that one covered at least. Fortunately, the game is forgiving with all the experimenting with the command line and all the starts needed to troubleshoot. My main problem now is getting the screen to load without be chopped off. I've tried both windowed and full.

Thanks again

Thanks

what happens if you add "-w"

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -w -deepcolor -dd_sw -cpu2 -pxf1280 -pyf1024 -skipVideo

this is my switch, works perfectly with no lag.

-w -px1600 -py900 -deepcolor -dd_sw -cpu2

Here is my command line switch string. Note that it goes in the shortcut's properties "Target" section, not the "Start In" section.

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -archive -deepColor -px1680 -py1050 -w -fixedArt -skipVideo -multiaudio -SingleCpuOrders -cpu3

As you can see, you messed up the -SingleCpuOrders switch.

As tolsdorff suggested, get the game running in Windowed mode (the -w switch) before you play with trying to get it in full screen mode. There is a thread in the stickied area about getting the game to run in full screen. Korvar wrote those instructions, and created the Seabee Alpha utility to make setting your switches easier.

You now have over 10 posts so you can post screenshots and other .jpg or .gif images. It would help if you posted a screenshot of your shortcut properties so we can check a couple of things.

I tried the -w and it still gets chopped off just above the word "scenario selection". I can't drag the window to increase it's size either. I took a screenshot and converted it to a jpg but can't see a way to upload the image to my post. I'll search for how to do it and if I can find it I can then post.

I'm doing all my command line changes in the target line and my current line is:

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -w -SingleCpuOrders -deepColor -cpu4 -pxf1280 -pyf1024 -skipVideo -multiaudio

My laptop is an AMD Ryzen 5. I've tried numerous combinations of switches and just can't get the screen centered, whether in windowed or full screen. With this current command line I can click on the menu items I can access (all but the scenario selection item) and the next screen appears fine, but again the bottom is chopped off.

Thanks for continuing to help. I had the game running fine on my previous Intel laptop but now with my new laptop it's a struggle again to get it to work.

might be that your laptop resolution isn't big enough in the y-direction?

Perhaps try the normal -py and -px, and not the -pxf and -pyf? Decrease the -py a little bit as well. Seems like pyf1024 is just too big somehow, but without looking at it, is hard to say.
What happens if you try -px1600 -py900 (both without the F ) instead of -pxf1280 -pyf1024. Or BBFanboy's setting of -px1680 -py1050.

I have no experience with the game on a laptop, but I recall some other players saying laptops are finicky about what resolutions they can tolerate. Right click on your desktop and find the resolution settings for your laptop. The changes it allows will show as discreet jumps. Use the largest setting it allows, but be aware that might not work because Win 10 wants to keep the action bar visible, which will cut into the screen space. I had to go down a notch or two to operate a window next to my action bar. Also be aware that the higher the resolution, the harder it is to read text in the game.

Success! My laptop supports up to 1920x1080 and offers a number of choices with less resolution. I chose the 1280x1024 initially because the higher res would be too small, I felt. All of a sudden I remembered that I'd changed the "size of text, apps, and other items" in the Windows display control panel to 150 percent because it makes it easier on my aging eyes when doing "normal" computer work. So, I changed it back to 100 percent and started the game. Voila! Everything works fine, but I'll need to now monkey with the settings a bit more to see if I can increase the size of the display without going back to the problems I had.

Thanks so much!
