I've owned CW2 for a while now but have never gotten to play it beyond a few turns. I tried the zips from Matrix initially. Then the steam version. Then the steam version again. That stopped working, so I went back to the Matrix zips w/latest patch. All this over, maybe, a year.

A few nights ago I tried again and it worked great. Better FPS than I've ever seen before. I played four or five turns of a new game. Now when I fire up the game, it crashes while loading. Here's the main.log:

I have owned the game for a while but have never gotten more than 2 or 3 sessions before the game won't restart. I cannot recall all the past errors. I kept telling myself, "Oh, I'll look into it at some point." The latest error looks like this:

Exception EAccessViolation das le module CW2.exe dans 0043649D.

As far as I know nothing on my computer has changed in the past few days. Who knows, Microsoft is crafty.

Any help?

Also:
Matrix Download w/latest patch (if that's wasn't clear from the above).
AntiVirus has an exclusion for the CW2.exe.
Dxdiag attached.

If it didn't work out of the box it would be one thing...maybe my crappy laptop is missing something. But if memory serves, all crashing behavior started after it worked fine post-install.

so my advice is, update the drivers for the sound card and intel video onboard chipset, then the Nvidia card, which atm isn't used by anything and should be set to the default

https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/pc-components/how-set-default-graphics-card-3612668/

then game will work fine with correct video being used

Fired it up this morning and it works...no changes from last night. Hmm...

Good catch: I did forget to set the graphics card for the cw2.exe after the latest install (although I do have the Nvidia global setting to use the card, not the integrated thing...seems to ignore the global setting). As an aside, I set the graphics card default after it worked this morning. CW2 works with both. However, better map scrolling with the 940. :)

I suspect it's the audio. GuitarPort is a bit of hardware through which you can run a guitar to play on virtual amps. I use it also as a usb soundcard when my laptop is stationary. I believe I plugged in it after I started my computer yesterday. Perhaps the restart this morning picked up its drivers in some different way that CW2 could jive with. Dunno. Just a guess.

Thanks for the help. I should update drivers, too.

Hi
I have restaretd the game after 6 years on a 3 year old laptop and get the same problem.
My laptop tells me I have an AMD video card not Nvidia.
Would welcome guidance.

Many thanks.
I think the error message I get is the same as Menschenfresser.
I am windows 10 and patched up to latest offical CW2 patch.
I can't track down the main log, how would I access that pls?
I have made my AMD graphics card the default card for the two executable programs.
What other info would you like?

look at the dedi memmory, low

drivers are 4 plus years out of date, with windows 10, you need to tick the extra box to let windows 10 download and install extra drivers, which once loaded, may or may not work with the game, as no other dedi card drivers are installed either, meaning onboard, which doesn't always work either with games

use the guide on how to auto install everything

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-properly-update-device-drivers-windows-10

good luck

If it's not already, try setting the TexAtStart line in the General.opt file to 0.

Many thanks - much appreciated.
In fact we rolled back to patch 1-06 from 1-0603 and it is working fine.
If anyone has the same problem please pm me and I can provide that patch.
