Just picked up this game for a bargain during the holiday sale. I can find all sorts of tutorials and tips for the BtR part of the game, but none for ED, especially as far as properly defending Britain. Can anybody here point me in the right direction or give some tips as to playing as the RAF and defending from German raids? Mainly where, when, how many, and how to conduct proper intercepts without getting all your fighters chewed up or running your exhausted pilots into the ground, or having no reserves for late day raids?

Here are a few tips:
Use your Galdiator's and Defiants to patrol the south and southeast coast when you start seeing axis radio traffic get up past 100 or so. Stagger patrol elevations every 5000' or so. Once they have ID's some big raids Recall them before they get embroiled in combat. Launch these patrols 4 at a time.

Get familiar with the capabilities of your canes and spits. Rotate fatigued or low morale formations to/from the north with fresh and rested groups. Best way to gain morale is to rest.

I don't worry about intercepting recon so much but some like to have a go at it to gain pilot experience.

If Jerry wants to try and wipe out your radar grid let him have a go so you can concentrate on his attacks on your airfields and industry. Some players think it's a waste of time because there are so many and they repair quickly. Learn the difference between Chain home high and chain home low radar.

I like to launch 4 as opposed to the entire group when setting a CAP above my primary sector airfields. Watch for sneaky AI sweeps of your airfields. Sometimes better not to launch if too late in this case because you may get caught on the tarmac and your pilots killed.

It's not so much about killing the axis bombers as disrupting the raid to reduce accuracy so try and pounce as many raids as possible before they drop their bombs. hold back some group elements to pursue stragglers for easy kills.

experiment with your fighter doctrine to see what works best when.

My main goal is to try to shoot down more planes than I lose. That means dogpiling on raids, particularly the smaller ones. I figure I'm going to get bombed no matter what, so try to take down as many as I can. I seem to shoot down more planes using direct over bounce, but take heavier losses.

What's the best way to break through to the bombers in those 100+ raids? All too often I end up swamped by the escorting 109's and take heavy losses without touching the bombers. Is it just a matter of numbers as to how many fighters I can throw at them? Should I even bother intercepting at all if I'm badly outnumbered?

Just a few questions.

Try to meet the 109's over the channel with a sacrificial group so the escorts burn fuel and disengage early, then feast on the unescorted bombers. Doesn't always work they way you plan though.

Bombers do get disrupted by air combat and flak, even though there are no apparent losses. This can result in inaccurate bomb runs and less damage.

The RAF 1 day and 1 week campaigns are RAF practice. The Luft is just too powerful compared to RAF. The RAF is really the underdog you need to spend your limited resource wisely . Try Watching the computer play itself. Also check out ED AARs. By playing you'll learn what works best for you. check out BTR Luft tactics too.

The longer ED campaigns are better because the objectives are strategic rather than tactical. simovitch makes all good points. Against big raids, one way is to strip away the escorts by engaging them with spits early and force them to burn fuel. Meanwhile, get some Hurri up and waiting, patrolling the likely path to their target. Then order them to attack the bombers when their escort is heading back . You goal is not to shoot all bombers, just give them something to worry. It effects their bombing accuracy and some may even turn back. Sometimes you have to let reallry big raids through,
especially if its not directed against a value target.
