Those Japanese units at Kwangchowan could be newly arrived reinforcement units that had not filled out their TOE yet. Their raw AV for combat was 77 while you destroyed 126 combat squads, indicating there are substantial disabled troops in the units. That is common for units drawing raw recruits to fill out the TOE - it takes quite a while for those to "recover", which I think means getting them trained up for actual combat. Hope you can pursue and destroy them.

Situation July 31 1943:

There are a few Japanese bases just north of Suva and near Noumea. Have the Japanese developed those and put aircraft on them?

Nice job taking Lashio - it appears from the Burma-China map that the Burma road is now open.

Those few atolls north of Suva are basically 0(0) for airfield, so not much use for either side.

Closest useful atolls are Nauru and Tarawa, way north of that. And I am invading Tarawa very soon.

Lashio was tough, took 2+ division attack, I didn't realize it was so heavily garrisoned. But had to be done.

Tabiteuea has a 0(1) port and a 0(3) airfield potential. It is 6 hexes south of Tarawa.

I think IJ AI is definitely on defensive. It's middle of 1943 and I don't think it can attack anymore.

I think you are right, except for raids. I don't know if the AI uses air units for deep raids or not.

It definitely has done CV raids in Central Pacific, Wake I. seems to be sore spot for AI. Loss of CV Kaga was result of one of those groups running into my subs when returning to Tokyo.

It'll be interesting to see how AI will react to my Tarawa invasion. I can take them on, having 10 fleet carriers (including HMS Victorious) and 4 CVLs (though one of those is Hermes and in wrong ocean). All fleet carriers and 3 CVLs (plus 6 operational (non-replenishment) CVEs to secure Amphibious TFs) are in Pacific. There is also CVE Long Island, but using that only as ferry carrier.

I don't get e.g. Kittyhawk III -> Kittyhawk IV. This "upgrade" brings you worse plane.. Same with P-40K -> P-40N series...well, they are about same planes.

You lose 20 mph top speed and 200 ft/min climb rate and gain 1 durability...bad deal IMHO.
