Major LCUs in Australia - How many of them have reached 50 in experience levels? I know you have a few more weeks before your infantry squads are stockpiled enough to start the upgrade process.

None. Perth Division is closest.

Now that the decision to fight has been made, the Exeters appearance along with the British light cruisers and 8 Yankee destroyers have caused the IJN invasion fleets to pull back at least for now...which is giving us time to get troops into place.

It is important to keep Ledo in Allied hands to feed China supplies. This might be our number one strategic priority right now. Our 2nd is Australia, especially in denying strategic VP there to Japan.

Our forces made good their escape from Prome prior to combat...

I almost sent our light cruisers flank speed south to intercept the invasion fleets, but our NavS spotted heavy cruisers, and I figured that Japan would create one or two CA/DD screens...and I did not want to tangle with those. But now, I see he hasn't...which means I might get more aggressive.

I lost two Cats today...which is never good, and there are 5 disabled at Davao that I will lose tomorrow...but you can see a secondary reason to use Singers offensively, and that is to cause Japan to react and lose even more planes to op losses.

I don't understand why Japan drives their planes so hard.

Below: all plane losses sorted by total.

I’m no specialist of Japan, but the only game I played the Empire, I suffered from heavy ops losses on my A6Ms too - because I abused their long legs and used them to achieve air superiority much farther, and escorting the bombers. Run a squadron at extended range for a few days, with a couple of fights, and the planes & pilots’ fatigue levels will rise very high, and if at that moment you want to rebase them further, losses can quickly escalate. From my noob’s view on Japan play, the Zero’s range is one of its main advantage, but it’s also a liability if used too hard.

Thanks for an interesting game and good AAR!

Just wondering about the situation in NORPAC & CENTPAC? All quiet?

Getting into your opponents head is key in a game like this

If he's worried about your reactions in Jan 1942 then you are doing well

+1

I feel like Lowpe's opponent was banking on a rapid and bold push into Australia before Lowpe could bring in reinforcement LCUs, air groups, and warships to stop it. However, Lowpe has been just as aggressive in pushing these reinforcements to Oz and bringing up ships to interdict the Japanese.

This is a very aggressive defense and I'm taking a lot of notes.

There is an IJN sub in the NORPAC, and CENTPAC I have a bit setup will detail later...haven't spotted the KB in a while, and worried they will show up there.

Some of the small Aussie units can recombine into a larger, Bn sized force - like Kanga Force. Those are commando like units and IIRC at least one of them is parachute infantry. But it might be mid-1942 before you get the missing pieces to combine. Still, it is a reason to try and keep the existing units from being wiped out, or buy them back if they are.

And then below Akyab, the British drive home the attack for the most part dodging the nasty IJN torpedoes (except for Hughes) and savaging the invasion force...

Can Capetown and company make it back to their Buffalo LRCAP?

PS: Anderson separates and is hit twice by Vals, other Vals attempt the Capetown but Buffaloes show up and intercept them, and the Capetown also skirmishes with 2 IJN Destroyers, planting a decent hit on one of them.

Impressive! I would have thought the TF escort was enough to hold off WWI-era CL's.

Very good turn, congrats !

I don’t understand your opponent, Lowpe. He knows you have a lot of smaller warships, well, light, up to HMS Glasgow (essentially a 12-gun 6-in heavy cruiser labeled as « light »), yet he only escorts his ships with a couple of old DDs and CLs,, which, by the way, are slightly under-gunned compared to both RN cruisers (7x5.5in vs 5 or 6 6-in guns, slightly weaker armor, and RN ships are not as inexperienced as the US ships at start). And loading ships near the frontline with both troops and fuel is a recipe for a disaster in such a situation (as your combat report shows, very few shots leading to heavy fires all around).
Could he be afraid to lose any more CA ? Or they’ve all accumulated too much damage from one month of operations ?

And is it really the full of KB ? That attack only has one squadron’s worth of dive bombers with equal size of fighters, could be Zuiho or another lightweight., or did you see the squadrons’ name ? If not, it’s a bit weird to invade India without KB (and showing its location by raiding). Though it’d tie well with his heavy operational losses for Zeroes, if he continues to use them on long-range LRCAP.

Thing is, we don't know yet what his plan is do we?

He's got invasions going on all over the map, trying to take as much as possible in the quickest possible time. Its a pure "AV win in 42" strategy.

Not sure Lowpe can feel comfortable in there not being a proper invasion of either India or Oz or even SWPAC yet

Only thing for sure I think will be strat bombing of Oz, as its a guaranteed AV generator.

And regarding the RN WWI era crusiers, they have good experience and 6-inch guns, a couple of hits from them can ruin any Japanese DDs day!

Whatever Japan's ultimate plans are, we know they are on a timetable.

Japan simply is stretched thin. He is relying upon Allies not risking their ships early on, however, I decided early on to defend the perimeter with ships more so than troops....and since Perth, I am defending from his quick grabs on the ground too. From the beginning I have put a huge wear and tear operation on the IJN ships...nailing battleships with 1000#, or CD guns, or mines. It has been as holistic as I can figure out.

I am sure his naval yards are full, plus we have had final success: sinking Ryujo, Chitose, Takao, Suzuya, Kumano, Nagara, Isuuzu, Yubari, and Katori. Plus 13 destroyers.

I have lost Prince of Wales, San Francisco, Indianapolis, Exeter, Boise, Mauritius, Perth, Danae, Dragon, Durban and 21 destroyers. A lot of losses happened on Dec 7...

In addition, I have managed to nail very hard several amphibious invasion forces loaded with troops.

That is thinning the herd. I plan to continue to use Allied destroyers very hard...no escort duty for them.

You are correct...the window is closing on Japan AV I feel no matter where Japan decides to ultimately go, especially if I can keep Ledo. China is going well, with several a historical units rushing there or already there. As always, the key to avoiding AV is saving China for as long as possible.

There is currently many task forces off Burma, but I have only seen the replay....so I don't know their makeup. 700AV should have railed into Chittagong this day...

If you continue the way you do it, he won’t have the shipping to move them.

Seriously, waiting that late in ‘42 for a push is dangerous : if so many LCUs are stuck in India, the US start to have enough assets to start invasion somewhere else. From memory, unless you greatly build Indian bases, there’s 3000-4000 VP worth there, so the Allies only have to reconquer 750-1000 VP worth (Allied points) to counteract those gains. The unbuilt Marianas are worth as much as 500, and can be built to be worth as much. Java has over 300. Hokkaido is worth much more. If he’s spreading thin and venturing so far away, it could be tempting... especially if his losses (air) continue to increase. Have you already considered such a move to counter his AV pursuit ?

The Arsenal of Democracy indeed: Those three Swordfish and two Dragons a month are going to turn the tide.

I chuckle, but players can learn a lot from how you use every arrow in the quiver, and often in very creative ways.

Cheers,
