I've been using the Christmas period to celebrate the season of goodwill and peace on Earth by re-fighting the most awful war in history, but I'm not feeling very successful. I've only played as The Baddies so far, but I find myself struggling to achieve the huge encirclements, particularly around Lvov or in AGC, that occurred in history. After about five turns my Panzers are immobilised by fuel problems, the Soviets have some solid-looking lines along an axis from Estonia's border, straight down the line through the continent to the Black Sea.

Is it just a case of trying and failing until I crack it? I've not touched the Soviet side yet but there's so much to worry about that I don't know if I'll ever get this game! How do you form and seal the great historical encirclements, and how do you keep the Panzers rolling through the summer of '41?

Are you playing against AI or human? The latter I haven't tried, but against the AI you just need to perfect the 3-hex break. You're probably moving through ZOCs (hexes next to enemy units, slow down movement). Infantry units should do the first attacks, whereas tanks and motorised units should just concentrate on moving. And where infantry can't attack just one or two paner units should attacks, whilst the ones with most MP cruise through.

Failed attacks usually end up costing a lot more MP than one deliberate attack with sufficient forces. You might also be doing the mistake of attacking all enemy units, which you don't need to do. Encircle them and they can't move, just make sure you don't leave gaps in your lines. Soviets can't really move through ZOC for the first two years.

I have an AAR that I need to update here that might go into enough detail:
https://mesmeric.games/war-in-the-east-after-action-report/

Otherwise, read AARs here at these forums to see what's what.

Your panzer are without fuel?
You should learn and use HQ buildup for your panzer armies (it's a way to accumulate fuel before going ahead).
If you already don't do it, you should also repair the rail in the direction of your spearheads.
Fuel is carried to HQ (and units) from the railheads, more the distance, less it arrives.
