So my old PC was on its last legs and the windows update a few days ago pretty much killed it.

So I pulled the trigger got a new pc and installed the game.

Basically everything looks find until I try to start a turn.

It looks smooth until after I put in the password.. It quickly goes to about the file 80% downloading then stops... After 5 minutes it finally loads. But then while the game map shows up (and can scroll) it does not allow me to point to anything and examine it/give orders. Basically I can look at a screen, but can not touch (for the 001 combat review things move until there is a combat sequence. I can not touch the screen/hit escape to end the first combat report..it just gets stuck there).

So basically I can get into a turn, but can not do anything.

I have tried about 30 different switches as well as have tried emulations of windows 7/vista to no positive effect (though I do thank BBfan for the idea)

Any help would be appreciated... All I want for Christmas is a lot of death, destruction and gory battle

Can you post some screenshots and your shortcut target box with the path and switches?

Hi BBfanboy

I can, but I got a bit of help from the support team and there has been progress. This also leads me to believe that the problem could be some kind of internal driver.
Basically the PC does not have a sound driver and when I tested I did not have a headphone installed (my head phone split in 2 afteryears of abuse and I am getting a new one today). Support suggested
I plug in headphones and then the files uploaded in seconds. SO that problem solved.

But the core problem that I can not actually point to and manipulate anything on screen has not changed....

For the record I am using this now
Windows 10

Link "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -px1600 -py900 -SingleCpuOrders -dd_sw -altFont -multiaudio -deepColor -skipVideo -archive -w

Folder "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition"

But I have switched between Windows 10, vista and 7 and changed the switches many times.. Probably have tried close to 100 combinations... And with the headphones plugged in virtually all download the game
quickly so hard to see any difference.

My guess (and I am extremely uneducated) is some kind of driver problem

"C:\Matrix Games\WitP AE\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -px1600 -py900 -cpu4 -SingleCpuOrders -dd_sw -altFont -multiaudio -deepColor -skipVideo -archive -w

This is mine and works perfectly, it points to the Beta however. The start in folder should be "C:\Matrix Games\WitP AE". There's no emulation and is not run as an administrator

I note that yours has 's in the folder name. Don't know if this can cause a problem but it might.

You the mouse works on the main screem allowing you to select game type, scenario etc. If it only stops in the map it's unlikely to be the mouse driver.

Do you have DirectX installed?

Does the keyboard work?

As per Chris21wen's switch string, I found that I needed to specify a CPU to avoid conflicts between Windows (which hogs CPU1), and antivirus which was using CPU2. I went with CPU3 and things improved significantly. Try -cpu4 in your switches.

Hi BBfanboy.

Thank you... I was able to somewhat play a turn (using Windows 7 and CPU4)... It still seems dodgy though as I can not run through the 001 file (it starts normal, but after the first combat it does not allow me to click so it becomes frozen). Slitherine support suggested changing the Windows regional settings to English (United States)

Not sure if that will have a positive effect.....Nor sure why. But anyway, was able to send my (worthy and patient) opponent a turn so that is progress.. Again. Thank you.

Why do you need to click on the 001 file?

Once in the 001 file the action unfolds. Once the results of a battle are done, the battle results are shown. But then to continue the flow of action one must click the close button on the dialogue or hit escape. I can not do that. It just stays frozen with the first combat result on the screen

Fortunately that image is not from my game (I am the allies) but if that was the first combat sequence in my game the screen would freeze there.

The non-responsive mouse is your only problem? The Win10 update may have substituted Microsoft's mouse driver for your mouse manufacturer's. You could try downloading/installing the mouse driver from your mouse manufacturer's site.

The fact that headphones plugged in yes/no affects file upload/download times strongly suggests that your new PC is completely bollixed, and the mouse problems just confirm it. If you had the old PC applications and settings mirrored and just copied over onto the new system, that's the problem right there. Take it back and have Windows 10 properly installed, and then suffer through the pain of reinstalling all your apps. If it was a clean install and you are having these problems after doing individual installs of all your apps, then it's 100% a problem with the manufacturer's Windows 10 install on the new system and the whole thing should be reformatted and reimaged.

Otherwise you'll be putting Band-Aids on Band-Aids ad infinitum.

Kull, could there be a bad chip in the RAM, ROM, SSD or CPU causing this or would the system totally crash? Back when PCs were expensive I bought one locally assembled by a guy using parts made in countries like Indonesia and Malaya that were fairly new at high tech manufacturing. It worked OK for about a year and then got really flaky for a couple of months before crashing. Never again! I buy solid brand names now.

A hardware issue would probably result in a variety of problems, not just a single repeatable issue. To me this sounds like incompatible drivers - or ones that are missing altogether. I learned a looooong time ago that mirroring an old Windows build onto a new machine was a recipe for long term disaster. Nobody likes having to reinstall all their software, but it's better to do so in the long run.

I don't know that's the case here, but hearing the words "new PC" and then reading about these strange, totally non-AE problems strongly suggests that it's either a bad Windows install or a mirror job.

Thank you BB and Kull please allow a rant/update

So an update in my continuing frustration (for the record it is a Dell (the new PC).

Situation with old PC... As the problems started after the 12/16 windows update I tried to uninstall it.. There were 4 various updates on that day... All except the windows update were uninstalled. System will not let me uninstall it
It is like fighting against the Borg. They recognize every attack and neutralize it

Older work PC (also Dell) I tried installing figuring a different random PC should work fine... It did not.

New PC at home (hell Dell).... The game file (in this case 21) works only around 1 in 10 times... Yesterday I got it to work once but exited it (in hindsight a huge mistake) as I wanted to see if I could run the 001 without the previous problem. It turns out not only could I not run it properly I could not run the 021 file after that... I must have tried 10-15 times (it seems both CPU3 and CPU4 will work though if the system feels generous). But yesterday could not do a turn.

And Kull might have a point with drivers... My mouse seemed fine with all other issues until I tried playing SHogun 2 (total war) and the inability to click raised its ugly head yet again..

How do I reinstall a mouse driver? I went to there HP and downloaded a bunch of drivers that needed to be upgraded. However, I could find no info about mouse drivers.

WIll see if I can recover the older PC from Dec 15 and see about that.

But this is getting annoying.. On 3 different PCs the game does not work. Am I the only one with these issues?

Getting very frustrated and annoyed.

Seached for 'reinstalling windows 10 mouse driver'

Reinstall the device driver

In the search box on the taskbar, enter device manager, then select Device Manager.
Right-click (or press and hold) the name of the device, and select Uninstall. (You could also secleted upgrade here)
Restart your PC.
Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

Thanks Chris.. Did reinstall the mouse. That was not the issue it seems.

I am wondering if there is an issue with the game files themselves.
I can not generate much (as the game freezes during the combat replay that I do). But even the report that Japanese player prints out seems stilted. The combat report seems fine (that he produces) however here is my
signals information

>SIG INT REPORT FOR Mar 17, 42
Yep... Nothing..

And the operational report as well looks weird
OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Mar 17, 42

Japanese forces CAPTURE Tambelan-eilanden !!!
Fresno expands airfield to size 4
Stockton expands airfield to size 4
Calcutta expands airfield to size 5
Jorhat expands airfield to size 3
Nelson expands airfield to size 3
Noumea expands airfield to size 3

Remember, this not the info I generate when doing the 001 file.. This is what the Japanese player generates (maybe that is correct).
If possible can somebody pmail me, I send the 001 file and password and check out if it runs normally? ) (standard campaign (#1) using the official patch

Also, I put my old pc into original state and downloaded the game. It does not work every time but I was able after a few tries to do a turn (though not get through 001 combat file report)... At least I can somewhat play the game. Maybe

I don't believe you are handling the 001 file correctly, hence why I asked why you needed to click on it.

The 001 file is not to be touched by a human player. You don't give orders here, you don't investigate things, you don't scroll. If you are playing the computer you never have a need to open it. If you are the Allied player in a PBEM, you only run it to get the Combat Reports generated. This thread explain s how to run a PBEM game.

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2180809

My suspicion is you have violated the above and consequently corrupted the 001 file.

Alfred

Alfred, thank you for the information. That said, I started by playing Uncommon Valor millions of years ago, then the original WITP, then AE.

I am capable of running the 001 file. Something is happening (whether it be a problem on my PC or a corrupted file before I touch it). I do not understand why. But it is not because after all this time
I am doing something during the replay to mess things up.

Please note everything was running fine UNTIL the 12/16 Windows update.

Anyway... The issue might be fixed... And it is very weird. It also explains why only I was affected, but yet on every computer I tried it on

I also had an issue with Shogun total war and on a discussion group there several people had the same issue. Basically it seems that the latest Windows update messed with the
IME (Input Method Editor) . As I have a computer that supports Japanese language the IME is important. The solution was to go back to the previous IME.

I think it is fixed (will be sure tonight after I get the turn but I was able to run the previous turn). I do thank everybody for their suggestions (I was able todo the turn files, just not the combat results).
It is much appreciated

Computers can screw you so many ways!
