How many people play with command and control on? I have played a number of games.... most perfer to have it off?? Does this function make the game less fun or more realistic?? Any comments?? :confused:

It is a shade of gray. In some aspects, it is more realistic and forces you to plan your attack carefully. In others, it is too constraining of individual squads' intiative. I tend to play with C&C on against AI (more challenging) and C&C off against human (more flexibility)

Hi, I don't fully understand how to play with C and C on.I tried an e-mail game once with it on and my troops wouldn't move.. Apparently you must give them orders before the game starts?

I prefer to use command and control in all games unless recommended by the scenario designer. The stated reasons for command & control in the player's manual gives a good reasoning behind this. Also, the omnescient eye of the game player allows for an unrealistic level of "initiative" at the individual squad level.

Once you stat playing with C&C it becomes second nature. It is more constraining because in real life you are constrained by orders or lack of them. there are previous threads that give you the basic tenets of C&C. Use the search engine and read up on them. You can't master this game without learning C&C.

Bite the bullet and try to learn this way of playing. If nothing else, you can then make an informed choice when you decide not to use it in certain scenerios. When you play with C&C on, you are more closely experiencing the role of a commander, who can at best only influence the course of a battle through the attempt to deliver orders. When you play with C&C off, you are more closely experiencing the role of the individual squads you are moving, but with an unrealistic knowledge of the big picture plan. Sometimes you want to do one or the other, depending on your reason for playing that day. But it is rewarding to at least try mastering it.

I'll give it a try! Now we are mainly talking about WW2 here.Command and control in the world today is far more finely tuned. I can't imagine US servicemen without orders for example...I mean with all those satallites and other high tech ware. [ July 08, 2001: Message edited by: MacCready ]

Some like C&C and others do not or like me do not prefer it. Why? I seldom move all my units at the height of a battle. I seldom split up a Platoon to go hither and thither. Lastly-Time. Next C&C is fine for some scenarios but not as realistic as it should be. I do not think that a real C&C for a game is possible as a subordinate Platoon Leader can decide to act on their own initiative and move in another direction to stop a flank attack. Current spwaw C&C does not permit this type of action to the degree that it should or even reflect a unit becoming lost or simply running away when it hears the guns booming in the distance. It all depends on another thing if C&C is for you or not or both and that is this - how long do you want a game to last? With C&C on - a short game can beome a long play. After playing both ways - I really do not find that much difference except on lenght it takes to play one turn. With busy work and family time - C&C off during spwaw game maybe the better way to play when time is rare. Both ways have merits but it is the time factor that makes me shy away from playing with C&C on the majortiy of games I play. IMHO -- I find that with current Fog of War in game -a player does not have an omni-presence on the cyber battlefield.

This is true. A game cannot simulate every aspect of battle. As Marauder said, C+C doesn't always simulte a platoon leader's ability to make a snap decision, though, if you plan well, you'll always have the orders to do so. However, on the other hand, the game engine also doesn't simulate a platoon, company, or battalion melting away because of a leader being killed, so I think those things balance out. It all depends on another thing if C&C is for you or not or both and that is this - how long do you want a game to last? With C&C on - a short game can beome a long play. The player does have a much larger view - with C+C on or off - than the simulated platoon leader would have. From what I've seen using C+C, it's not at all hard to use. What it makes you do is plan better, and to hold reserves, like a real commander. This is because, with C+C on, if you get suprised, you cannot automatically react to it. I've had zero C+C probs, playing the Russians, in the Stalingrad League, and none of my opponents have said anything about having any with the Germans. So, in conclusion, I'd echo 11Bravo, above, play with it, and learn it. It's not for everytime you play, but, IMO, it makes the game much much better. Alex
