I've recently been enjoying Age of Rifles and am impressed with the range of conflicts it covers. Off the top of my head I can't think of any other game that lets you play the Boxer Rebellion or the Spanish-American War on a tactical level. While looking through the user-created scenarios, I noticed one listed in the compendium as "missing:" one portraying a battle from the 1890s Sino-Japanese War. It is titled "Tsinan(SinoJapanese)1896" and is one of the "C#2" scenarios in the compendium. I have not been able to find it for download anywhere.

Now something isn't completely right here, as the real First Sino-Japanese War ended in 1895 and it did not have a "Battle of Tsinan/Jinan" as no fighting took place in that part of the Shandong Peninsula. It is possible that the scenario was portraying the Jinan incident of 1928 when the Nationalist Chinese and Japanese armies clashed, and it is just dated incorrectly.

But that got me thinking, has any engagement of the First Sino-Japanese War ever been recreated for a PC wargame? I can only find tabletop games portraying the naval battles. I understand this was a pretty lopsided war with battles that might not make for the most fun wargaming scenarios, but I'd still be interested to know if one does exist somewhere. Does anyone here know of one?

Can't think of anything "standalone," but the latest TOAW might have something; it's got lots of different scens.

Like 6 or 7 or 8 years ago (I really can't remember), a new user (not a spammer and *disappeared* after that) had started a thread to show a [Chinese] wargame about the second sino-japanese war (1937-1945). With screenshots: the game was entirely in Chinese and looked *very* detailed. Years later I tried to find it, but no luck. And even if I manage to find it, maybe it's still in Mandarin. A very detailed operational game, I'm pretty sure of that.

I looked up TOAW IV on here and on YouTube, and couldn't find any scenario for the First SJ War. Looks like they have some good ones though. There was a Balkans War setup on YouTube. Where could I find most of the user-generated scenarios for this game?

The Second SJ War mod sounds cool. Unfortunately I do not know anything about it. There are several wargames covering this war though, as this is the more "popular" one and can make use of WWII assets. There's an article on wargamer com detailing several of them. I can't post a link here as I'm a new user, but the title is "The Wargamer's Guide to The Second Sino-Japanese War" if you want to look for it.

On YouTube I did find a video of a WWI mod for a game called "European War 4" that has a First SJ war scenario with Qing vs. Japanese. The units appear to be drawn pretty accurately, and the gameplay looks like an odd mix between grand strategy and tactical wargame. The scenario is on a map that's supposed to be Korea, but it definitely looks like a European map from the base game that's doubling as the Korean Peninsula. It also appears to be an Android game, so it looks very rudimentary. I would have to set up an emulator on my PC to play it. As of right now this is the only game I've found with a First SJ War scenario.

I wonder if I'd be able to find that Tsinan AoR scenario. I'm hoping it's not lost for ever, but that's sadly very possible.

This has all the scenarios you will ever need.

Thanks for letting me know about this great game. I've downloaded Age of Rifles and I'm blown away by how good the game is. It is crying out for a reboot/remake.

There are some AoR scenarios here also.

Awesome, thanks! Looks like no 1894 or '95 scenarios, but that's still a really good collection.

And no problem, Age of Rifles is well-deserving of an update. I'd love to see it with at least Pike and Shot graphics or something similar. Even so, the original game hasn't aged too badly. Glad you're enjoying it.

Had not heard of that. I looked it up and it looks interesting, though I can't seem to find it anywhere Glad to know there's a game that simulates naval battle from the war too.
