Hi guys,

I've been trying to get a Unit.bmp or .png file to work from the Graphic Override scenario folder and nothing seem to work.

Has this been eliminated during an upgrade?

Example: Here are some files from the original install that don't appear when the game loads....

C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War IV\Graphics Override\Russian Campaign 1941-1945
units_1_020_0.bmp and updated to .png
units_1_020_2.bmp and updated to .png
units_1_020_4.bmp and updated to .png
units_1_022_3.bmp and updated to .png
etc....

I was looking to create some unique symbols for some specific icon color groups. Not sure if that is possible anymore?

BRD!

Those files are obsolete and no longer used.

Here is a good example from the "Call To Arms 1775" folder that has custom symbols but I don't believe works anymore...

Bob, can you only change the color schemes now and no longer the symbols by 2d color file?

UPDATE: I guess the real question is can symbols be change by different color schemes or if you change the symbol will it be for all 109 color schemes in the .col file?

You can change the icons, but you are limited to the one sheet. Some designers feel constrained by that limitation.

Was hoping to us it for my Leaders in the ACW scenario. It would have worked great to add the leader images to the different color files. RATS! Got to think of something new.

Here is a sample GRANT image I was trying....

We can't use the .bmp format for counters anymore. And now you can't even use the .png counter sheets. Don't even know why they are included. One counter sheet does introduce limits to what you can do and it obviously wasn't done to reduce the size of the game on a hard drive since all of the .bmp files are still there. There is no longer the ability to have specially produced counters for a scenario and still keep the standard set for the rest of the same scenario. So yeah, it does introduce limits that were not there before. IMO what was lost was much more than what was gained. Whatever that was.

Lobster, I fully agree with you. Before there were 110 color option unit types with 110 possible custom symbol modifications. Now it's 110 color changes with 1 cookie-cutter symbol sheet.

With my custom WW2 sheets in TOAW3 I used them for countries flags, leaders (Patton, Rommel, etc.) and special units...like Totenkopf SS unit. Now, all of those custom scenario symbols/graphics...*Poof!*...gone. for a quick .col change file.

Seems to be sore point with many of the designers. :)

Right. And one of the older reasons for not including new functions in the game was the negative impact it would have on old scenarios. Looks like that excuse got too old to use.

Personally I'd love to see the old counter sheets come back. Won't happen till hell freezes over but one can dream.

Using the new color files does mitigate the need for endless counter sheets, and instead you just modify one color file.

At the cost of only one set of icons. And further, the sheets are still there as well as the mechanism for keeping them separate to make support levels work. So if all of the mechanics are still in place and the graphics are still in place what need was there to eliminate versatility? Seems to me they threw out the baby with the bath water.

It doesn't really matter. It's done and it will never revert.
