Disappointed that I didnt bag the whole task force and there was no follow up strike from the Illustrious. Herbie has told me in his email with the turn that a surface cover group did not engage, guess I was lucky on that one. Time to get out of Dodge methings!

A question if I may. I have these Beaufighters at Dariwn tasked with Naval Attack missions as I am tailing a convoy Herb is running into Kai-eilanden. The planes flew but they flew a sweep mission and not a naval attack mission as ordered. Im attaching screenie of orders given and the combat report. Bit confused about this one. This squadron has been training for low naval bombing since its arrival on the map.

Just a guess, but did that TF have I high enough Detection Level for the aircraft to find and attack it? Or maybe the range was too long to carry bombs for a naval strike?

A squadron of Hudsons based at Darwin were able to strike at it. Range maybe an issue that I had not considered though hmm.

Edit - dropped back into the save and the range from Darwin is 11. Maximum range for the Beau is 11. Im guessing that it would carry a limited load of 100lbers at that range?

I don't have the game open at the moment. Just look at the Aircraft details and if it shows bombs across from the extended range info, they should have carried bombs. My guess is that they would not carry bombs at that range. FBs are a bit smaller than 2E level bombers.

13th December 1942

Post Script to Port Blair Action

The surface cover group that the IJN had deployed at Port Blair spared their blushes and compounded a miscalulation on the part of Commander Evans. The latter had gambled on the fact that his destroyers would have enough fuel to make the run back to Ceylon. He was wrong. The next morning saw his ships adrift with empty bunkers and messages were quickly sent to Colombo, Trincomalee and the Illustrious to rendevous with his ships and rebunker with enough fuel to get back to port. Ships soon appeared, but they were not freindly ships. The IJN had turned up looking for revenge; revenge they found. Unable to move, Evans' ships made easy targets, though they fought back with every last piece of ammo aboard. It was a knife attack in the dark and it was no surprise that all four Royal Navy ships sank below the waves. That said HMS Illustrious did receive Evans' signal and they were steaming towards his last known position. Maybe a chance to avenge Commander Evans was afoot.

16th December 1942

Silence falls over the Bay of Bengal as both the Royal Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy retire. HMS Illustrious could not find the enemy strike force and it appears the Japanese did not fancy a surface interception. Admrial Phillips made his movements obvious hoping he could bring the firepower of his three battleships to bear by goading the Japanese to a surface action. This did not materialise neither did the air strike.

A report by the USS Amberjack, however, seems to indicate that the forrays into the Bay of Bengal had caused some reaction in the Japanese command. The Amberjack was patrolling around Groot Natoena, a known route for the fuel convoys leaving Palembang, when she reported several sightings of carrier aircraft. She also reported a near miss from a bomb. Her sonar man detected many screws approaching but no visuals were able to be made. It is suspected that enemy carrier units are moving towards Singapore and perhaps into the Indian Ocean as well. USS Shark, part of the Palembang Picket Force, is moving North to try and intercept a move into Singapore. Whatever the case bases on Ceylon have been put on full alert just in case. Further submarine units are moving into the Straits of Malacca in case the Japanese sail up them.

18th December 1942

Allied Commanders had finally agreed on taking some offensive action against the Japanese after it was clear that the enemy was not going to invade Australia from its bases in the Dutch East Indies. It was indeed these bases that were earmarked to receive the first telling Allied blows in the war. The strategy was simple. Apply the massive heavy bomber strength concentrated in Australia with telling effect.

The Japanese have been able to construct several mutually supporting hubs centered around one main base. One of these hubs (Kaimana) on the coast of Dutch New Guinea would be at the receiving end of what Allied command hoped would be the first of many heavy raids. Two B-24 Squadrons were detailed with the attack. Crews of the 436th and the 400th Heavy Bomber squadrons were briefed at their aerodromes in the Horn Islands Maps, navigation data and the latest recon info were dished out. Intelligence expected fighters from supporting bases at Noemfoor, Biak and Sorong to support the defence. The bombers were to rely on the concentrated defensive firepower of the formation. 24 B-24's meant a lot of 50-cal machine guns in the air!

Australia Command had also been building up a mutually supporting network of bases to secure its supply line to Darwin. In recent weeks both the Wessel Islands and Groote Eylandt had been developed to a point were they were able to support fighter operations and Merauke had been developed into a major base. Furthermore, on the other side of New Guinea Wewak and Aitape were receiving major reinforcements in order to bring further pressure to bear on the aforementioned Japanese bases and provide another axis of aerial attack.

The attack itself proved a stunning success. 23 bombers took off from Horn Island and several F-4 Lighting recon aircraft (9th PRS) out of Merauke rendevoused with the bombers just south of the target. As expected the enemy was up in the air ready to greet the USAAF and at least 17 Ki-43 type fighters (33rd Sentai) were engaged. Any worries about unescorted raids were dispelled as plane after plane failed to penetrate the defensive boxes the bombers had set up. One Ki-43 was seen to go down in flames and many gunners reported hits on enemy fighters. To the enemy's credit the fighters tailed the bombers right into the target and the last reamining Ki-43 was seen off a few minutes before the lead planes ordered bombs away.

Post raid recon established that the base itself was lightly damaged but the victory was not so much in the damage caused but in the fact that enemy fighters had been batted away with no loss to the B-24s. Maybe the Japs were caught unawares, maybe it was just luck but morale was high and it seemed that for the first time in a long time the war was being taken to the Japanese in a meaningful manner.

Kaimana was to be the target again on the 19th but this time B-17s from Darwin (98th Heavy Bomber Squadron) would also join the attack. They would aslo be a maritime element to the attack as well if the weather permitted a fast rapier thrust.

20th Decemebr 1942

The commanders of the 2nd Marine and 6th Marine Infantry Regiments have reported the end of their operations on the Marshall Islands. The 2nd Marines eradicated the Japanese garrison on Majuro while the 6th Marines, supported by the 3rd Marine Tank Batallion where mopping up on Mili. Though cut off from supply for a while and subjected to protracted boming the Japanese soldiers fought to the last and proved some hard nuts to crack.

That said two Marine regiments are now veterans of apmhibious operations and valuable experience was gained when working in conjunction with Navy and Air Force units. Though largely a sidenote to the wider Pacific campaign the Marshall Islands has allowed the High Command to perfect its amphibious doctrine and its lessons will be applied to future landings; no doubt much harder landings.
