Upgrades. Is there a thread or file or video anywhere that explains these in detail or for a beginner? is there a screen in game, that I can't find, that lists all the possible upgrades for a turn. Or a screen that shows you impending upgrades like you can see for reinforcements and withdrawals? And anywhere that shows you what exactly an oiler or a cargo ship, for example, will be upgraded into, if you press the button?

Thanks.

In your "List all active Ships" (shortcut S) Screen and Port Screen you can use the buttons on the bottom to filter ships that are overdue or due to upgrade.

edit: Correction

Firs tof all, the game makes a distinction between "upgrade" and "conversion".

"Upgrade" usually means just changes to weaponry, like more AA guns or more depth charges.

"Conversions" will change the ship type, for example a DD can become an APD or a DMS, or a TK an AO.

"Upgrades usually become available at set dates and if you leave the upgrade option on "yes", the upgrades will happen automatically if the ship is disbanded in a port that meets the upgrade requirements.

"Conversions" also become available at set dates, but don't happen automatically, the player must order the conversion himself.

However, some "upgrades" include conversions, i.e. if you set the upgrade toggle to "yes", the upgrade will also convert the ship to some other type, for example a minesweeper to an Escort or an DD to a DM type.

When you click on a ship name to open the ship screen, the upgrade and conversion options - if any - are being displayed at the bottom right, clicking on the yellow font will send you to the details pages where you can see the proposed changes.

It is also worth mentioning that when upgrading ships get put automatically into a ship repiar yard if there is one present. Double check as upgrading 'damage' can often be repaired at the same rate than in the yard but on the pier side. Thus you free yard space for any damaged ships coming in. Upgrade damage is refelcted by a % symbol ingame.

+1

Know your information screens. It is important to mouse over every single piece of text
on the information screens and read the flyouts. They give important information.

Upgrades…..In most cases ships during the war were adding more AA and radar.
Sometimes removing surface guns to get them.

They are hungry for more AA and better radar.

This reflects the changing nature of the war from surface to air threat.

But….Upgrades need to be watched. Not all of them are beneficial depending on your individual style of play.

Especially watch the sub upgrades. You may lose the ability to carry mines if you do certain upgrades.
That maybe true with some other ship types. You can lose some options.

You don’t need Tracker but I have found it can save you time.

The ship’s location, yard size, damage, upgrade delay are shown and can be sorted.

You don't need tracker.

After a while you will be able to pick the cruisers/DDs that have missed an upgrade by their AAA rating.

Besides the option to list the ships due upgrade, in the All Active Ships screen and individual ports screens, you also have the information appearing in the tooltip when you hover your mouse over a ship, in port screens or when creating a TF.

For ships, I agree with Ian, you don’t need Tracker, the information is readily available in game (the only advantage I see is Trugrit’s post #7, and even so, after a while, you know your ship classes).

For squads and other LCU devices, though, Tracker is a great help, especially with the Brit (and other CW) devices, whether squads, AFV’s or artillery pieces. This is where checking the exact ID of a device helps, as there are certain devices with identical names, but different upgrade paths, like the Australian Improv. AFV (Hvy) upgrading to Matildas II while the Indian Improv. AFV (Hvy) upgrade to Vickers Tankettes (and then Valentines III), or both pools of Marmon Herrington’s upgrading to different AFV’s. Tracker will help you identify all the units needing a given piece of equipment (in the Devices screen), and how many, and you can then better prioritize.

I did not mean to suggest that upgrades are just about AA and radar.

An upgrade can change the ships class in some cases.
As in the case of the DD Express which changes from a DD to a DE.

In game you have to be experienced enough to know where to look
as the information is in several different places on the screen.

You also have to switch back and forth between different screens.
It tests the memory of an old player like me.

But….This is is one of the things I like about the game even if inexperienced
Players hate it. It gives you multiple chances to miss something and screw up.
I use both the game screens and Tracker.

The advantage of Tracker is that it puts all the information in one place
in the format most computer users are familiar with.

As I get older this can be a big help.

Tracker looks useful, anyway. But I can't find anywhere that says how I should direct it to the archive folder. In my save folder is an archive folder, which CR uses. I suppose tracker needs to go there for info. But I can't find an option to re-direct it. And, even if I managed that - I need to move saves from somewhere to somewhere else each turn, in order for tracker to read them? or what? I have read all the tracker install info, but found it a bit unclear on this. But never mind - I'll probably figure it out.

One of my pet subs is SS Argonaut...and I often forget it changes to SST and loses ability to do much anything.

I think I edit it to upgrade to use Mk 12 mine after Mk 10 production ends.

You don't need to direct it to the Archive folder.
It does not need the Archive folder to function.

It is Combat Reporter that needs to be pointed to the Archive File.
